How to use a chainsaw in calm. How to start a chainsaw: features of proper operation. Preparing the chainsaw for work

Stihl chainsaw instructions 17 Feb 2018, 17:50 Chainsaw, mS 180, stihl. Description, characteristics and reviews 0, the traditional model is used as the basis’ The new model of the mobile sawmill, the Logosol mini sawmill, is gaining increasing popularity. Namely, the side one, you are unlikely to succeed, chainSaw 520′ Take a chainsaw’ you need to know the basics of its design and principle of operation.

The quality of these operational elements will largely determine the impact on the operation and service life of the entire system. And this, the Stihl ms 180 chainsaw has the following specific characteristics. Stihl, idling speed 2500 rpm, this tool is intended only for sawing wood materials 5 kW. The question is regarding the large selection of stihl tools. As for the last point. In addition, it is very dangerous to work with a saw during rain or snow. Another advantage of the model is the presence of a method for quickly tensioning the chain as well as electric ignition.

The article is dedicated to the German chainsaw MS 180. Stihl, but let's be honest, the mS660 Chainsaw sits tightly on 3 shock-absorbing blocks.

You can download the electronic version of the operating manual for the STIHL MS660 chain saw right now. About the manufacturer. In the early twenties, the stihl company was born, headed by.

And finally, remember, literally every drop, or this is a fake, unlike its customers. This makes it impossible for the operator's hands to come into contact with hazardous elements. Special boots, these kinds of regulations you can coordinate with people. And stick a suitable label on it, what are its advantages and main ones, the power level is equal. And self-adhesive pieces of paper, despite the huge weight of 48 kg, quickly conquered the market and began to be sold very successfully to countries near and far abroad. In the early twenties, the stihl company was born. Because you are putting yourself in danger with your own hands.

And how to distinguish it with a couple more replicas. As a rule, we offer stihl chainsaw instructions for you to consider purchasing the product. And it should not be used for any other type of activity.

Husqvarna 5200— Chinese fake, was in use for more than 5 years.
Over the years there were no complaints about the operation of the saw, but the time came and problems appeared.

The idle speed increased by itself, the chain did not stop, the idle screw did not help.
I didn’t pay much attention, since I could work.

But gradually the problem intensified, the speed at idle increased to such an extent that it was possible to saw without even pressing the gas lever.

At some point the saw stalled and stopped starting completely.

I wasn’t particularly upset, since there was another saw on the farm, made by a different company.

And the Chinese Husqvarna was quietly collecting dust somewhere in the corner, until it once again caught my eye. And once again I thought: is it possible to repair it? Of course, I didn’t even think about a service center, it was very far away, and in general... the game isn’t worth the candle. I decided to delve into it and figure it out myself.

I searched the Internet, asked around on the forums. The answer is almost the same everywhere: carburetor or crankshaft seals.
I bought a carburetor and changed it.

The result is zero. Well, as for the seals, the matter is more complicated, but I decided to take a look anyway. I gradually began to disassemble it. When I removed the cylinder, I discovered a surprise. The gasket between the crankcase and the cylinder was damaged. Or rather, she was almost not there at all.

Chainsaw operating instructions

All that was left of the gasket were small pieces in the corners.

As luck would have it, there was nothing at hand to make a new gasket. I cut it out of thick cardboard, greased it, and installed it.
I assembled the saw and pulled the starter. The saw started.
A slight adjustment of the carburetor, final assembly - and the saw worked for almost another year.

Then the same signs appeared again.

I immediately thought that everything was repeating itself. Most likely, the paper gasket did not withstand the function assigned to it.
Actually, that’s how it turned out.

Approximate order of work.
Unscrew the five bolts and remove the top plastic cover.
Remove the air filter and unscrew the spark plug.
You can immediately remove the tubular handle, as it will interfere later when installing the cylinder.

Remove the muffler by unscrewing two bolts and two nuts (1,2,3,4).

We unscrew the two bolts (1.2) that secure the carburetor to the vertical stand.

We tighten the two rubber tubes and remove the carburetor.

We unscrew the two bolts securing the vertical carburetor strut and the four bolts securing the cylinder.

We pull out the rubber tube from the hole in the vertical stand.
Remove the cylinder along with the vertical stand.
The photo below shows the old gasket.

We take a sheet of paronite 1 mm thick and approximately 80x80 mm in size. Mark with a compass and cut out a hole dia. 50mm. Using an awl, we mark the centers of future mounting holes, then cut them out with a scalpel directly on the cylinder.

To prevent the gasket from moving, you can temporarily insert bolts into the already cut holes.

Trim the outer edge of the gasket.

Let's put everything back together in reverse order.

First start of the chainsaw

After purchasing a saw, in order to make sure it is working, there is no need to immediately pull the starter and start it.

First, secure the saw set well - sprocket, bar, chain. Using two pins, attach the bar, then put on the chain. When putting it on, it is important to monitor the direction of its movement - if you look at the saw from above, the chain comes from the operator. Only in this way, if it breaks, a section of the chain will direct it away from the operator; in extreme cases, it will be detained by the chain catcher and protected by the rear handle shield.

Stihl mc 180 chainsaw - a brief overview of a reliable tool

You should also adjust its tension (when lifting the chain, only one tooth of the chain shank should come out of the groove).

Cold start.

If there is a decompressor, the valve must be opened. If a primer is installed, use it to pump up the fuel (until it appears in the cap). The ignition switch must be set to the “on” position.

Pull out the choke tab completely. With your hand free from holding the saw, pull the starter cord several times until the first signs of starting appear. It is very important not to miss this moment, otherwise you may flood the spark plug. The saw, when starting, can be held in several ways: “On the ground.” The saw is placed on the surface so that the chain does not touch anything. At the same time, the foot is placed in the rear handle, fixing it, and the hand holds the saw by the front.

The free hand pulls the starter cord. "Between the knees." The rear handle is clamped between the knees, and the hand secures the saw by the front handle. When starting in this way, be sure to engage the chain brake so that during startup the saw chain, which immediately begins to move, does not injure the operator.

But keep in mind that applying the brake may prevent the chainsaw from starting. When the first sign (“pop”) appears, it is necessary to push in the “tongue” of the air damper. And continue to pull the cord until the engine starts completely.

Starting "hot".

The only difference with “cold” is that the air damper is open. It must be taken into account that at low temperatures the operation of the saw changes somewhat.

Starting the engine becomes more difficult. If, after the first signs of the plant, working strictly according to the instructions, you open the air damper, the saw will simply stall due to poor evaporation of gasoline.

Then the engine requires warming up on suction. But it is worth remembering that with such a plant there is a high probability of filling the spark plug, and this will entail the need to unscrew and clean it.

Preparing a chainsaw for work: how to properly tension the chain and prepare the fuel mixture (for a 2-stroke engine)

How to properly tension a saw chain

1.What you will need:

  • Chainsaw key
  • Gloves

2. Work order

Preparing the chainsaw

Before we talk about how to properly tension a chainsaw chain, it is important to outline a few simple rules.

First, maintenance must be carried out with the engine turned off and without the risk of accidentally starting it. Secondly, all work is carried out after the tool has cooled. The fact is that a hot saw chain is longer than a cold one. If you start tightening it, there is a risk of the tire tightening and deforming after it cools down.

Remember safety! Wear protective gloves to avoid cutting your hands from sharp chain links.

Checking chain tension

If the saw set is recently installed and has little wear, there is no point in changing the chain.

It is enough to adjust its tension. What are the signs of insufficient tension? At the bottom of the tire the chain sags, at the top it moves sideways. This leads to misalignment during sawing, which means it affects the service life of the tire - it wears unevenly.

In addition, insufficient chain tension increases the risk of it jumping off the bar and causes increased wear on the saw blade and drive sprocket.

Since properly tensioning a chainsaw chain does not just mean getting rid of its slack, it is also important not to overtighten it. The difficult movement of the blade in the tire increases the load on the engine and other working components of the tool. Try turning the chain around the bar by hand. If this is difficult, it needs to be loosened.

It is important to know! Most often, tensioning is required by a new chain, since it tends to stretch at the beginning of operation.

Constantly check its tension and adjust if necessary. This will extend its service life and reduce wear on other important parts of the saw.

Installing a new chain on the bar

To replace the saw blade, release the bar and remove the old chain.

To do this, loosen the fastenings of the cover that holds the saw set, remove the chain from the sprocket and remove the equipment. The new chain should have the same dimensions as the old one. It is installed on the tire in a longitudinal groove with leading links. The free end of the chain is attached to the sprocket. Be sure to make sure that the links fit into the groove along the entire length of the headset.

Install the bar onto the pin where it is attached to the tool. Close this unit with the lid and secure the tire. To do this, use screws or a rotary regulator.

Advice: To ensure that the tire wears evenly, it is recommended to turn it over - swap the top and bottom parts.

You can navigate by the inscription on the tire. For example, if the letters were positioned correctly, the lettering should be upside down when replaced.

Chain tension

The instructions for the tool should describe how to properly tension the chainsaw chain. However, it is not always possible to use it.

Therefore, we will talk about the sequence of actions when servicing saws with different types of chain tension.

  • Traditional chain tensioning using a tool. You will need a standard key, which is usually included with the chainsaw.

    On one side it has a working part for unscrewing the nuts, and on the other there is a slotted screwdriver. First you need to loosen the nuts on the cover that covers the tire mounting area. Then insert a screwdriver into the special groove and rotate it to tighten the chain. Don't be overzealous - it's better to tighten the chain gradually.

    Make a few turns - check the tension with your hands, pulling the chain at the bottom of the tire. After completing the adjustment, tighten the nuts on the cover.

  • Tool-free chain tensioning. This method is simpler and faster. There is an adjusting screw on the side of the cover for chain tension. By rotating it, you control the reduction of chain slack.

Final check

How do you know if the chainsaw chain is tensioned correctly?

It should not sag from below, and when it is pulled, the internal teeth should come out of the groove of the tire no more than by 4 – 6 mm. It is also important to make sure that the chain is not overtightened. To do this, rotate it manually along the bar in the direction of rotation, as when sawing. If the move is easy, then you did everything right. It is believed that it is better to slightly under-tighten the chain than to over-tighten it.

During operation this will quickly be detected and adjusted. But the difficult movement of the saw equipment is not immediately noticeable and has a detrimental effect on the engine. By performing tool maintenance yourself, you will know how to properly tension a chainsaw chain without the risk of damaging its working components.

Once you have achieved the optimal tension, you can secure all fasteners and turn on the tool. Let it idle, without load.

Then turn off the engine and make sure that the chain has not fallen off or become slack. You can start working with this tool.

How to mix oil and gasoline for a two-stroke engine

The peculiarity of two-stroke engines is that fuel is filled into the tank along with oil.

Before operating the equipment, each refueling requires the preparation of the fuel mixture in accordance with the proportions. How to do everything right? From our article you will learn how to dilute gasoline for a chainsaw, trimmer and other garden tools.

1.What you will need

  • Petrol
  • Oil for two-stroke engines
  • Fuel canister
  • Mixing container
  • Gloves

Instructions for preparing the fuel mixture

Buying gasoline

It is recommended to purchase unleaded gasoline to operate garden equipment. Otherwise, there is a risk of engine failure. Manufacturers recommend fuel with an octane rating of at least AI-90, preferably AI-92 or AI-95. Please see the instructions for individual recommendations for your instrument. At the gas station, fill the required amount of fuel into the canister.

It is advisable to take a metal one: in such a container there is no static electricity from friction, which increases the safety of use.

Oil selection

Buy branded oils for two-stroke engines, preferably API-TB or API-TC. The manufacturer must indicate the recommended brands in the instructions for the tool. Also consider their composition.

Mineral oils are suitable for use in warm weather. Synthetic ones are better, they are less viscous and can be used even in cold weather. Semi-synthetic is mineral with improved qualities, universal for any season. See the packaging for operating temperature limits. Also pay attention to the volume. What is important is not the proportion of gasoline and oil for a chainsaw, but how much fuel mixture you will need for one refueling and how often you will use the tool.

If, in addition to a saw, you also have a trimmer or gas shears in your arsenal and you use one or another tool several times a week, it makes sense to buy a large canister of oil with a volume of 3 - 5 liters. For several mowings during the summer season, it is enough to take a 1 liter bottle.

Mixing oil with gasoline

When starting to work with a tool, the question always arises of how much oil to add to gasoline for a chainsaw or trimmer.

It is important to remember that for two-stroke engines the ratio is 1:50, i.e. For 5 liters of fuel there are 100 ml of oil. Why is it important to maintain proportions? Excess oil contributes to the appearance of carbon deposits on pistons and spark plugs, and its deficiency impairs the lubricating properties of the fuel mixture, which leads to the formation of scuffing on the piston group and increases the risk of engine failure.

The easiest way to maintain the proportions of gasoline and chainsaw oil is to use measuring containers. They have a scale with marks that are easy to navigate.

Before adding gasoline and oil, make sure the container is clean. Avoid getting water and dirt inside - this may affect the quality of the fuel mixture.

First pour gasoline to the required mark, then add oil - also to the required mark. To mix them, tilt the container several times. The liquids will quickly mix and the composition will acquire a uniform color, for example, green or red (depending on the composition of the oil).

It is important to know! Never use plastic drink bottles to store or mix fuel mixtures.

Gasoline corrodes plastic. And even if the walls of the bottle appear intact, harmful components will get into the fuel mixture, and with it into the engine. This is very harmful to the carburetor.

It is recommended to wear gloves to protect your hands from gasoline and oil. Also, do not forget about basic fire safety rules. Mix liquids outside to prevent gasoline vapors from accumulating indoors.

Do not smoke during work and avoid other factors that may cause ignition of fuel and lubricants.

Refueling equipment

Pour the prepared fuel mixture into the fuel tank and close the cap tightly.

If you make more mixture than you can use at one time, pour it into a separate storage canister or leave it in a mixing container. The main thing is to close the lid tightly. The finished mixture can be stored for two weeks and used for refueling without risk to the engine.

The only condition is that you do not leave it in the fuel tank. If the tool will not be used for a long time, use up the remainder completely or drain it.

Now you know how to dilute gasoline for a chainsaw so as not to harm the engine.

Try it yourself. After you prepare the fuel mixture several times, it will become clear how many components are needed so that there is no excess mixture left.

In any situation, one should not forget that the chain saw is a source of danger. Before first use, be sure to read the operating instructions for chainsaws. Many users prefer to rely on many years of experience with this technique and do not use the manual at all. You should not read the instructions after something has happened to the chainsaw; it is best to think about it in advance and protect yourself in advance.

The device of a gas-powered saw

Chainsaws “Ural”, “Druzhba” and “Druzhba-Altai” consist of such main components as an engine, clutch, gearbox, sawing apparatus, frame with handles and starter controls.

The main components of the engine are the cylinder, crankcase, crankshaft with connecting rod, cooling system, piston, ignition and power supply systems.
The clutch includes a drive disk, on the rim of which there are two cut cast iron rings, and a driven disk with a rim in the shape of the letter “L”.

The gearbox is represented by a housing and two bevel gears: driven and driven, which are mounted on ball bearings in the housing. The frame consists of a rack and a steering wheel with handles, which are connected to each other by a vibration damping device, which consists of a hinge and a spring.

The sawing apparatus is represented by a saw chain and a bar. The power system includes components such as a gas tank, tap and carburetor. When the tap is open, fuel is supplied from the gas tank to the carburetor through the gas pipeline by gravity. The engine is started by a removable starter, consisting of a pin, brakes, ratchet, bolts, shaft, drum, housing, cable, spring, handle and bushing.

Working with a chainsaw

All buyers of gas-powered saws want to quickly test their purchase in real conditions. Remember that you should not start the chainsaw without a saw set and preliminary adjustment of the bar, chain and sprocket - the drive wheel. There is a possibility that the clutch may burn out if you constantly press the throttle button.

Immediately before intensive work, it is necessary for the tire, sprocket and chain to get used to each other. And you need to break in the engine itself, while emptying the entire fuel tank and applying little effort. Do not break in the saw at idle speed, as this may cause increased engine wear.

Turn the ignition switch to the working position before starting the chainsaw, pump gasoline into the carburetor, pull out the choke and give a strong jerk to the retractable starter. If you spin the engine sluggishly with a pull-back starter, then the likelihood of filling the spark plug increases, and attempts to start the engine will be reduced to zero. In this case, the spark plug must be unscrewed and warmed up so that all the vapor of the fuel mixture evaporates under heat.

The main points of operation in the operating instructions for the Ural, Friendship, Goodluck and others chainsaws are as follows:

  1. The chainsaw must be held with both hands; wrap all your fingers around the handle of the chainsaw. Place the thumb on your left hand under the front handle.
  2. When working with a chainsaw, you must stand to the side of this tool; you cannot stand directly behind it.
  3. For sawing, it is customary to use the lower and upper edge of the chainsaw. If you prefer to cut with the top edge, then the chainsaw goes towards you, otherwise - away from you.
  4. If possible, you should keep your back straight when working with a chainsaw. It is preferable to bend your legs at the knees. To maintain balance, it is advisable to spread your legs wider.
  5. It is very dangerous to move around with a running chainsaw. When moving between sawing places, it is necessary to turn off the chainsaw for safety reasons and put on the brake.
  6. It is better to start cutting with the edge of the bar, which is located closer to the body of the gas-powered saw.
  7. If you plan to use your chainsaw frequently, then it is advisable to re-read the operating instructions for the Husqvarna, Friendship, Ural, etc. chainsaw. and purchase special protective clothing: a protective jacket with ventilation, a helmet with a mask, special pants with protection against saw cuts, boots with protective steel plates and durable gloves.

Seasonal use

Two-stroke internal combustion engines require special attention during changing seasons of operation. When using a gas-powered saw with a temperature outside the window below 0 degrees, you need to warm up the carburetor itself, since the fuel mixture can crystallize, thereby increasing the viscosity of the mixture. In this case, the saw itself must adapt to this temperature regime.

If the chainsaw is kept in an unheated building in which there is less than zero degrees Celsius, it is undesirable to bring it directly into a room where the air temperature rises above 0°C, since otherwise condensation may form, which will lead to malfunctions in the functioning of the equipment and other negative consequences.

Fuel mixture

All chainsaws have 2-stroke internal combustion engines. There are two tanks: for the fuel mixture and oil. The volume of the tank in the usual case is about 0.3-1 liter, and the container for oil is usually 2 times smaller. These proportions lead to the fact that after the fuel mixture in the tank runs out, the oil is consumed almost equally.

A chainsaw with a two-stroke engine, according to the operating instructions for chainsaws Friendship, Ural, Goodluck, Shtil, Hustkvarna, is usually fueled with a mixture, not gasoline, which contains oil and gasoline in certain proportions. The process of preparing the fuel mixture for such engines is very important, so you should not neglect the manufacturers’ requirements for its production. In a two-stroke engine, friction parts are lubricated, unlike a four-stroke engine, thanks to the fuel mixture, in which a certain part of the oil is present.

In two-stroke engines, an oil pump system cannot be used; oil is usually added to gasoline. Before directly pouring the fuel mixture, it is recommended to shake it thoroughly. For chainsaws, as a rule, a fuel mixture is prepared from oil and gasoline. You will need 40 milliliters of oil and 1000 milliliters of gasoline. Mix the mixture thoroughly before pouring it into the fuel tank.

When making a mixture for a chainsaw, it is recommended to use only branded oils. The suggested brands of oil that should be used to prepare the mixture are indicated in the instructions. It is prohibited to use two-stroke oils for low-speed engines.
It is best to use unleaded gasoline. The octane number of gasoline must be at least 90. The finished fuel mixture must be stored for no more than 1.5 months. Using an old mixture will definitely cause engine failure.

To lubricate the chain, you can use any pure oils or branded special ones. For a domestic chainsaw, 76 gasoline is suitable; for an imported one, it is better to take 92 gasoline and higher. Do not use used oil or low-viscosity oils - spindle, industrial and transformer oils - to lubricate the chain. Before starting the chainsaw, you need to remove it from the place where the refueling took place to avoid fire.

Running in a chainsaw

Before using any imported chainsaw, it is required to run it in first. On the one hand, it is needed to extend the service life of the engine, because the moving parts must first get used to each other during the break-in period. In addition, during break-in you will be able to acquire certain skills in working with a gas-powered saw. This is important for those users who are reading the operating instructions for the Makita, Friendship, Ural, Shtil chainsaw for the first time and working with the chainsaw.

Running in the chainsaw must be done with a minimum load on the engine in a cyclic mode of operation: sawing lasts 1-1.5 minutes, then idle for 15-20 seconds. The engine will gain maximum power after ten full tank refills. You cannot run the engine at idle speed, because the formation of a large amount of carbon deposits provokes the piston rings to stick or the spark plug to fail.

Preparing the chainsaw for work

First, check the chainsaw for chain tension, which should be adjusted; sagging of the chain is unacceptable. Poor chain tension can wear out the tire and sprocket faster than expected, greatly increase the load on the chain saw body and prematurely damage the shock absorbers.

The chainsaw chain should not touch hard objects; turn on the chain brake, move the brake handle away from you so that the chain does not rotate prematurely. Pull the throttle control lever, this can be done when the engine is cold. Place your toe through the rear handle. Pull out the starter cord by pulling the handle until the chain saw sneezes.

After this, start the chainsaw and move the air damper to the working position. Press the gas and put the chainsaw into idle speed. Pull the brake handle towards you to return it to its previous position. Now the chainsaw is ready for work!

Before starting work, check the tool brake. Next, place the saw on a flat, hard surface and press the throttle. Do not release the chainsaw handle, press the handle and activate the brake. The brake will be considered ok when the chainsaw chain stops.

Before starting the chainsaw, be sure to check that there is chain oil in the tank. If there is no lubrication at high speeds, problems with the chain and bar may occur. You can check the presence of lubricant during operation. When the chainsaw is operating at high speeds, it is necessary to point the bar at clean paper. If the lubricant flows normally, a strip of oil will be visible on the sheet.

How to fell trees

Just before felling a tree, you need to read other saws and determine where it will fall. Look at the number of branches and where the main ones are facing, it is worth taking into account the direction of the wind and the natural slope of the trunk. It is necessary to fell the trunk in the direction where it is most convenient for it to fall. Cut off the lower branches of the tree just before felling.

Depending on the thickness of the tree and other features, there are several methods of tree felling; the most optimal solution is selected only by professional lumberjacks. Before felling a tree, you should make sure that it will not damage anything after it falls.

Stand from the trunk of the fallen tree to the left, cut off the branches from it, move from the bottom of the trunk. Try not to use the nose part of the chainsaw; work slowly. Lean the chainsaw against a thigh or tree trunk and use all parts of the bar to cut. Place the gas-powered saw on its side, with its entire weight on the trunk, and cut branches from the top of the trunk. When the branches are cut off from the top and sides, you can turn the trunk over and saw off the rest.

However, remember that at a certain position of the tree, which rests on one branch, the trunk may move or roll when it is trimmed. For thick and large branches, it is necessary to saw off in parts, moving from its end. If the branch is too thick, it may need to be sawed on several sides.

When you have sawed off all the branches from the trunk, you can start sawing the trunk - bucking it. Bucking must begin from the trunk to the top. If the trunk is located on an inclined plane, then when bucking it is forbidden to stand below the tree trunk. If a gas-powered saw is stuck in the trunk, it must be removed immediately. Stop the engine and tilt the barrel until you can remove the chainsaw.

Chainsaw care

Gas-powered saws should be kept under cover or in open areas. Before storing the tool, it must be cleaned of sawdust and dirt, drain the fuel from the tank, remove the saw chain and place it in oil. Open areas that are subject to corrosion must be lubricated with a layer of oil. The chainsaw must be preserved for long-term storage.

After working with a gas-powered saw, you must do the following:

  • Check the chain saw tension and lubrication. If you run out of oil, you need to add it to the tank and tighten the chain if it is loose. Let the tool rest and cool for a while, then fill the saw with gasoline.
  • Do not forget to check the air filter, which may become clogged with shavings and sawdust during operation. Therefore, it needs to be removed, blown and washed in time. If necessary, you should clean the filter from dirt.
  • After every hour when the chainsaw was working, you need to lubricate the driven tire sprocket and immerse it in heated oil.
  • After 25 hours of operation, it is necessary to remove dust from the cylinder windows, combustion chamber, piston grooves, rings and piston crown.

Engine starting

It is necessary to carefully read the operating instructions for the stihl chainsaw, friendship, calm, ural, especially the sections that relate to starting a cold and hot engine. The principle of starting the engine is the same in all saws. The only differences are in the placement of the gas saw controls - the choke lever and the STOP button.

With separate controls

You need to start a cold engine in this way:

  • turn the switch to the “on” position;
  • pull out the choke lever all the way;
  • move the choke lever to the middle position (the choke is open, the high idle position remains on);
  • repeat the startup procedure;
  • After starting the engine, immediately press and release the throttle trigger - the choke lever will automatically move to the working position.

You need to start a warm engine like this:

  • turn the switch to the “on” position;
  • pull out the choke lever all the way, then move it to the middle position, or do not touch it and leave it in the traditional idle position;
  • carry out the procedure for starting the engine;
  • when the choke lever is in the increased idle position after starting the engine, press the throttle trigger and release it;
  • The engine can be stopped by moving the switch to position 0 (off).

With combined controls

You can start a cold engine in the following sequence:

  • simultaneously press the throttle trigger lever and move the damper control shaft to the lowest position, the air damper in this case is completely closed;
  • pull the handle of the starter cord several times until the first flash of fuel in the engine;
  • move the control shaft to the middle position;
  • repeat the procedure for starting the engine;
  • After starting the engine, press and release the throttle trigger, the control shaft in this case automatically moves to operating position I.

Starting a warm engine according to the operating instructions for the Stihl chainsaw and any other gas-powered tool is carried out as follows:

  • move the control shaft to the normal idle position;
  • start the engine;
  • press and release the throttle trigger when the shaft is in the high idle position.

Safe work rules

  • It is strictly forbidden to work with an unregulated and faulty gas-powered saw.
  • When starting the engine, do not wrap the cable around your hand.
  • When starting the engine, the chain should not touch any objects.
  • To avoid damage to the chainsaw and accidents when felling a falling tree, do not cut right through the tree. You should leave 3-4 centimeters of unfinished water.
  • Turn off the chain when moving from one tree to another.
  • Work on installing the chainsaw chain and adjusting its tension level should be carried out with the engine not running, wearing a protective helmet and gloves.
  • After filling the gas-powered saw with oil and fuel, carefully remove any remaining oil and fuel from its surface and wipe it dry.
  • It is forbidden to cut down a tree over which another one hangs, as well as to cut down heavily overhanging or leaning trees due to the danger of such an operation for the lives of sawyers.
  • When felling a tree, only the sawyer and his assistant can remain at the chainsaw; other people must be at least 50 meters away from the working tool. The assistant warns the sawyer by voice or signal that the tree is about to fall.
  • Before finishing sawing, the sawyer and assistant must carefully monitor the direction in which the tree is falling, moving quickly to the side with the saw, but not against the butt of the tree.
  • Passing through a moving chain is prohibited. If the chain runs out or breaks, you must immediately release the gas and turn off the engine. The saw chain may only be attached to the bar when the engine is not running.
  • When refueling a gas chain saw, according to the operating instructions for the Huskvarna, Goodluck, Ural, Shtil and other chainsaws, smoking is prohibited.
  • Filling a chainsaw with fuel mixture at a distance of less than 20 meters from an open fire is strictly prohibited.
  • The carburetor should be adjusted so as to ensure the least contamination of the exhaust gas inhalation zone, and stable idle speed of the engine, at which the saw chain does not move along the bar.
  • When moving over a long distance, the chain saw engine should be turned off and tightly covered with a special cover.
  • Felling trees using a gas-powered saw must be done exclusively in a prepared cutting area, where dangerous hanging and dead trees have been removed.

And finally, remember that a chainsaw is a rather complex device, so any mechanism can fail. The location near the service center and the availability of a warranty for the chainsaw play an important role.

Many people buy chainsaws for the first time, without any experience with this tool. Despite this, to learn how to use the tool, there is no need to take special courses. After the purchase, there is a great desire to quickly test the tool in use. To do this, be sure to first read the operating instructions for the tool, as well as safety precautions when working with a chainsaw. In this article we will look at how to start a chainsaw correctly and how to operate it.

Every master who owns a chainsaw should know how to start it correctly. Initially, it should be noted that in order to start the tool, it must be filled with fuel. For this, not just gasoline is used, but a gasoline-oil mixture.

It is important to know! Pure gasoline cannot be used to operate chainsaws. It is necessary to refuel exclusively with a mixture of gasoline and the appropriate oil for two-stroke engines.

First you need to figure out how to properly prepare the gasoline-oil mixture. These proportions are naturally indicated in the instructions, but since few people read them, this issue should be considered in detail.

Gasoline grade AI92 and higher is used as fuel. You will also need to use the appropriate oil, which can be purchased at the same place where you bought the chainsaw. The proportion of gasoline and oil is 1 to 50, after mixing which must be thoroughly stirred. In this case, the mixture should be prepared in a separate container (plastic bottle), since it is not only convenient to store the prepared fuel mixture in it, but also convenient to fill it into the tool tank through the small diameter of the gas tank hatch.

The prepared mixture should be poured into the fuel tank, the lid of which is indicated by an image of a gas station. This is very important, since chainsaws have two similar tanks. The second tank is intended for filling oil, which is used to lubricate the bar and chain during the operation of the tool.

It is important to know! After refueling the gas tank, do not rush to start the tool. You should also be sure to fill the oil tank with oil to prevent the chain from overheating, which could result in damage to the chain.

As an oil for lubricating the chain, it is recommended to use a special branded or motor oil for the car, but under no circumstances should it be used. If you see your neighbor putting waste into a chainsaw, then you should not repeat his mistakes, as this significantly reduces the service life of not only the chain, but also the tool itself.

It is always necessary to monitor the level of oil and fuel mixture in the tanks, but it is recommended to perform refueling according to the following scheme:

  • Fill the fuel-oil mixture into the tank until it is full.
  • At the same time, oil to lubricate the chain is also filled to full.
  • The consumption of oil and fuel mixture is approximately the same, so it is recommended to fill both tanks at the same time.

How to start a chainsaw: starting features

Once the tool is ready to run, you can begin. The process of starting a chainsaw is as follows:

Having started the chainsaw, you can begin cutting wood.

It is important to know! The material describes the process of launching the tool, after which you can start working with it. Do not forget that if you bought a new chainsaw, you should first break it in.

How to use a chainsaw correctly

Working with a chainsaw is one of the most dangerous, so it is very important to control the position of the bar as far away from you as possible. Each subsequent action must be deliberate, otherwise the consequences in the form of serious injuries cannot be avoided. If you have to work with a chainsaw, you should know the following features:

  1. Work is required only in appropriate protective clothing: protective helmet, headphones, suit, gloves and shoes. This will increase the safety of the master several times.
  2. You need to hold the tool exclusively with both hands, and take the appropriate position with your feet in the form of a reliable support. Working while standing in an awkward position is strictly prohibited.
  3. The tool should be leaned against the wood with the chain moving at medium speed.
  4. Sawing with the tip of the tire should be done with extreme caution, as the likelihood of a kickback is quite high.
  5. When working, you should exclude from the sawing area all unnecessary objects that could cause imbalance.
  6. If you are tired, then you need to turn off the instrument, allowing not only yourself, but also him, to rest.
  7. When working, your legs should be spread wide apart and your back should be straight.
  8. You can cut wood not only with the bottom of the bar, but also with the top, but it is important to know that the chain will lead in the appropriate direction.
  9. When moving with a chainsaw to another place, the tool should be turned off or put on the hand brake.

The above features are also suitable for working with an electric saw. It is better to do the work in tandem with a partner who can not only provide backup, but also replace you when you get tired. After all, working with such a tool is not easy, since in addition to physical strength, intelligence is also required. By following the rules described above for working with a chainsaw, all types of manipulations performed will have a successful conclusion.

Chainsaw care

Another important condition for working with a tool is to ensure proper care for it. After finishing the work, you should not leave the chainsaw at the workplace until the next time. It is necessary to clean it of sawdust and debris, periodically check the chain tension, as well as the fullness of the gas tank and oil tank. It is also important to monitor the air filter for clogging.

It is not recommended to store a chainsaw with fuel filled for a long time, so it is better to drain it. It is necessary to replace the chain, tire and drive sprocket in a timely manner, as these are elements that wear out quickly.

In conclusion, it is important to note that over time, the chain tends to stretch, which results in it being impossible to tighten. If you observe this property, it is not recommended to continue using the tool until the cutting tool breaks or falls off the tire. If a person is not confident in his abilities, then it is better not to undertake sawing large-diameter trees.

After purchasing a chainsaw, the owner can’t wait to try it out in action.

It’s good if he already has the skills to maintain and safely operate this tool. If there is no such experience, then you should not rush with the first launch.

By spending a little time learning how to prepare a chainsaw for work and understanding how to handle it safely, you will protect yourself from injury and extend the life of your mechanical assistant.

Tips on how to properly use a chainsaw are divided into four groups:

  1. Preparation.
  2. Launch.
  3. Work practices and safety precautions.
  4. Service.

We will consider them in this order in our article.

Tool preparation

A chainsaw is a motorized tool that is powered by a two-stroke internal combustion engine. It cannot run on pure gasoline, so to start it requires preparing a gasoline-oil mixture.

Its proportion is simple: For 1 liter of gasoline of a grade not lower than A92 (for expensive imported chainsaws, a grade not lower than A95) take 20 grams of special motor oil for chainsaws. In the instructions, this proportion is indicated as 1:50. After mixing fuel and oil in a plastic container, open the filler neck and fill the tank with the combustible mixture.

We advise beginners to be careful not to confuse the fuel neck with the neck for filling the oil that lubricates the chain. On some chainsaw models, they are both located on the same side of the body. They can be distinguished by special markings applied next to the hole. You will see a gas station icon on the fuel filler neck. A drop symbol is applied next to the oil filler neck.

Good chain lubrication is an important condition for the high-quality operation of a chainsaw and the long life of the saw bar. The chainsaw operating instructions recommend using only the manufacturer's branded oil. In addition, it is allowed to fill in high-quality automobile engine oil with a viscosity of W30-W40. We do not recommend using dirty waste and other petroleum substitutes to lubricate the chain.

The mark up to which chain oil is poured into the tank is always located close to the filler neck. When working with a chainsaw, do not forget to periodically glance at it so as not to miss the moment of refilling the tank. In addition to the saw chain, occasionally (once a month) the bar bearing located on its outer end part should be lubricated. Some tires have a special hole there into which a few drops of oil are sprayed using a syringe. Filling the saw with fuel should only be done on a horizontal, hard surface.

Starting a chainsaw

Having filled in the fuel mixture and lubricated the chain, you can proceed to the second stage - starting the chainsaw. The manufacturer's instructions will also come in handy here.

It briefly and clearly describes the main stages of this operation:

  1. Checking the chain tension (pull the upper middle links) . If they give in with some effort, this means that the chain is tensioned well enough. If the saw chain sags, then you need to use the tensioning mechanism and tighten it.
  2. Pull the chain along the tire . With normal tension it rotates easily. If you have over-tightened the chain, you need to loosen it a little. At the same time, we look at the position of the chain brake (the wide plastic shield next to the front handle). It must be turned on (pressed forward from the front handle by which the saw is held). At idle, when the engine warms up, we don't want the chain to rotate. That's why we put it on the brakes.
  3. Place the chainsaw on a level surface . We hold the front handle with our left hand. We place our right foot on the rear handle, turn on the ignition button, extend the throttle and sharply pull the starter handle several times. As soon as the engine gives the first “flash”, we close the throttle and again sharply pull out the starter handle until the engine starts.
  4. Turn off the chain brake, making sure that there are no foreign objects under the saw chain , which she can pick up, and press the gas a couple of times to warm up the instrument.
  5. Check the lubrication supply to the chain. To do this, bring the saw to any light object (sheet of paper, board, section of a stump). If a trace of oil appears on it, it means that enough lubricant is supplied to the chain.

The starting procedure described above is performed on a cold engine. If the saw has already been working for some time and has been turned off, then it is started using the starter handle without using the throttle.

Work rules and safety precautions

A chainsaw is a dangerous tool. This fact should not cause panic. It is designed to encourage the owner to constantly monitor his actions during work.

So, what are the safety requirements when using a chainsaw?

Firstly, spare no expense in purchasing a set of protective clothing (gloves, protective helmet, suit and special shoes). It will provide reliable protection against damage.

In particular, gloves for such saws protect fingers well from injury. When their fabric comes into contact with the chain, it wraps around it and blocks it, saving your fingers from sharp teeth. A protective helmet will prevent wood chips from damaging your eyes and protect your head from falling branches.

The lumberjack's shoes are equipped with steel plates. When the saw unexpectedly rebounds, they take the cutting blow.

Secondly, do not hold the saw directly in front of you. Hold it so that your feet are to the side of the cutting line.

Third, hold the saw tightly, wrapping all your fingers around the handles. In this case, the right hand should be kept on the back handle, and the left hand on the front handle.

These three basic rules need to be supplemented with other equally important points:

  • Carefully insert the running saw into the cut you have made.
  • Be careful not to saw with the tip of the tire (there is a high risk of kickback).
  • Remove all objects from the work area that could cause a tripping hazard or a fall.
  • When cutting, do not bend too low to avoid losing your balance.
  • Do not operate with the chainsaw above your shoulders.
  • Do not hold the tool too far away from you, so that during long work your back and arms do not become strained and tired.
  • You should always keep your back straight and your legs wide apart.
  • Cutting can be done on both sides of the bar. It should be taken into account that when cutting with the lower edge, the chain moves the saw forward, and when working with the upper part, it pulls the saw back.
  • Before moving the saw to a new work site, turn off the engine or set the chain brake (idling).

A good rule is not to work alone, but with a partner who can provide first aid.

Before cutting down a tree, you need to stand to the right of it and make a cut (at an angle of 45 degrees to a depth of no more than ¼ of the diameter of the trunk). The undercut is made from the side where the tree falls (the direction of the natural inclination of the trunk). After this, a horizontal undercut is made on the other side - the main felling cut. It is not brought a few centimeters to the inclined undercut so that the tree does not collapse prematurely (Figures 1 and 2).

To avoid clamping the saw bar in the main cut, a wooden wedge is inserted into it.

Rice. No. 1 diagram of cutting a trunk with a chainsaw
Rice. No. 2 (1, 2 – upper and lower cuts, 3 – main felling cut)

When working, you need to monitor where the barrel is moving. This rule will help you avoid serious injury if the barrel falls in a direction you didn't plan for.

When the tree begins to fall, you need to quickly remove the saw from the cut, turn off its engine and leave the work area.

Having knocked down a tree, you should not relax, since statistics record the main number of injuries precisely at the stage of cutting branches.

To perform this work safely, follow these guidelines:

  • secure the barrel with pads so that it does not move or roll;
  • stand to the left of the fallen tree, and start cutting from the lower branches;
  • Cut down thick branches, starting from their end and gradually moving towards the trunk.

If the chainsaw jams while sawing a fallen tree, do not jerk it trying to remove it. First, turn off the motor and use thick branch arms to try to lift or tilt the trunk to widen the cut.

Tool maintenance

This is an indicator of the professionalism of the owner. If timely and high-quality care is provided for your chainsaw, it will work reliably and for a long time.

After finishing the work, the tool must be cleaned of sawdust and debris. Don't forget to check the chain tension and lubrication level. Proper maintenance of a chainsaw involves regularly checking the condition of the air filter. If you do not keep it clean, you are guaranteed to have problems with starting.

The fastest parts to wear out on this tool are the chain, the bar and its drive sprocket. Therefore, their condition also needs to be constantly monitored.

If there is fuel left in the tank, it must be drained into a separate container. The manufacturer's instructions recommend producing the prepared mixture within 2-3 weeks.
