Walls in the hallway - how and with what to finish the walls? (photo-instruction). How to finish the walls in the hallway: practical and durable materials Wall material in the hallway

The corridor or hallway is the room where the tenants of the apartment first of all get when they come home from the street, so pollution and damage are sure to appear on their walls over time. If there are small children or animals in the apartment or house, then the decoration of the lower part of the wall will certainly be in a special risk zone. Therefore, when starting repairs, you need to carefully consider how to finish the walls in the corridor so that the material is resistant to most mechanical influences.

In addition, it is necessary to take into account the fact that the entrance hall is usually the “face” of the apartment, setting the tone for the interior design of all rooms, which means that one cannot but think not only about the strength qualities of the material, but also about its aesthetic side.

A wide range of modern materials, which today can be found in hardware stores, makes it possible to choose a finish for any request in terms of style and financial possibilities. However, before dwelling on one of the many design options, you need to consider the positive and negative aspects of the chosen approach.

wood finish

The tree has not gone out of fashion for many centuries, thanks to its amazing qualities that create the most favorable microclimate in the premises of the apartment. For finishing the hallway and corridors, wooden cladding materials produced in the form of lining or panels are suitable, depending on the chosen design style.

Natural lining

Wooden lining is a more affordable material compared to natural panels. It is made in various forms, so it is possible to use it to create an interior that matches different styles.

Several types of lining are produced, but all of them are used when decorating a corridor in such styles as Provence, Country or Russian hut.

Wood is a material with a structure that does not conduct heat well, thereby keeping it indoors, so walls sheathed with it will always be warm to the touch. In addition, such a finish can partially reduce the level of noise coming from outside.

Wooden lining is often called a tongue-and-groove board in a different way, although this is a contradiction - such a term is more suitable for floor boards that do not have an external relief. However, a board with a smooth, non-profiled outer surface is often a good material for finishing walls in hallways and corridors.

The lining is classified, in addition to the type of profile, according to quality features - it is customary to distinguish between classes "extra", "A", "B", "C".

  • "Extra" is the lining of the highest class, without defects and the core of the trunk.
  • "A" - a class of material, also of high quality. In the production of this lining, wood is selected, on which one knot per 1500 running millimeters is allowed on the front side or edge, as well as up to two non-through and small cracks on the back side of the board.
  • "B" - a class of lining, which has a lower quality, so it can have up to four knots for every 1500 p. mm, with a diameter of up to 20 mm. It is also allowed up to two non-through cracks, darkening and streaks.
  • "C" is the lowest class of finishing material. It can have knots up to 25 mm in diameter, several cracks up to 5% of the length of the lamella, bluish and dark stains, and even mechanical damage. This material has a low price, so it is often used for the manufacture of crates. If such a lining is planned to be used for decorative cladding, then it will have to work a lot on it, cleaning the surfaces and repairing flaws.

Any of the classes is suitable for lining the walls of the corridor, but some of them can be used in their natural form, that is, while retaining the textured pattern of the tree, while others must be painted to mask the damage repaired with putty.

The lining is made from various woods, both coniferous and hardwood. The most affordable material can be called pine, linden and aspen, and the most expensive finish is lining made of larch, cedar, oak, alder and ash.

The lining can be installed on the walls horizontally or vertically, depending on the effect you want to get. If the hallway or corridor is narrow and long, then it is best to mount the lamellas vertically, otherwise the room will seem even narrower and longer. In a square hallway, the lining can be fixed in different ways, as planned by the design. To give the room originality, you can use a combined mounting option, that is, sheathe one wall horizontally, the other vertically, or even combine different directions on one wall.

Natural massive panels

More expensive natural wood finishes are massive panels, which can completely sheathe all the walls, one of them, or only the lower sections are decorated with them. For the manufacture of this material, mainly expensive hardwood is used, which has a beautiful textured pattern, such as beech, oak, alder, cedar, ash. However, all these breeds have a high price and are not always affordable for a family with an average income. To reduce the cost of their production, most often different types of wood are combined with each other.

For example, the base of the panel is made from a less expensive material - it can be pine or spruce, and then its front side is covered with two or three layers of fine wood veneer. The veneer is fastened to the base using a special hot pressing technology, which gives the panels increased strength.

Panels are also made from plywood, which is also veneered, and then varnished or waxed.

Wall panels, depending on their design, can be applied in different styles - these are classics, classic English, Victorian, modern, neoclassical, rococo and other areas.

Advantages and disadvantages of wood finishes

If we talk about the negative aspects of finishing the corridor with wood, then they practically do not exist, since it is devoid of flaws, with the exception of the high price of some of its options. But on the other hand, it has many more advantages than any other material.

  • Wood has excellent strength and resistance to mechanical stress, therefore, with proper processing, the finish is not afraid of the claws and teeth of pets.
  • The environmental friendliness of wood is undeniable compared to other artificial finishes, so this design can create a microclimate that is favorable for the residents of the apartment.
  • The durability of the wooden finish will allow not a single dozen years to resort to repairing the hallway.
  • If you want to change the interior design of the room, the finish can be easily painted in one or more colors.
  • The ease of installation of any type of wood finish, with the necessary tools, allows you to carry out this process on your own.
  • Each type of wood has its own textured pattern and color scheme, so choosing the option that will appeal to the owners of the apartment and fit well into the interior of the hallway is not difficult.
  • From wood paneling to well-fitting boards and clapboards, they go well with a wide variety of materials such as wallpaper or artificial stone, so this finish provides ample room for imagination when developing an interior project.

Wallpaper finishing

Despite the large number of new finishing materials that have recently appeared in the public domain, they continue to be popular, not only for living rooms, but also for the corridor or hallway.

But, as you know, wallpaper is a rather thin material that is prone to damage and pollution. Therefore, if there is no perverse desire to renovate the corridor every year, then it is best to combine them with more durable finishes, such as wood, plastic, chipboard or MDF panels or artificial stone.

It is especially important to choose a combined option if there are animals in the house. Well, in the event that a small child lives in the apartment, and it is decided to finish with wallpaper only, then their washable version is best suited.

If earlier only paper wallpapers could be found in stores, then today the range of this finishing material is extremely wide. So, for a hallway or corridor, non-woven, vinyl, fiberglass, metallized and photo wallpapers can be suitable. You should not choose textile finishing cloths for decoration of these rooms, as dust can accumulate in them, which can cause the development of allergic reactions.

To make a choice, it is worth considering a little more in detail the most popular types of this material.

Non-woven wallpaper

The non-woven version of the wallpaper consists of two layers - a base made of non-woven cellulose fabric, as well as an upper polymer coating. This type of material is not strong enough, but is able to hide small flaws in the walls. It does not shrink when glued, wear-resistant, environmentally friendly, easy to install on your own, since when finishing, glue is applied only to the wall.

Non-woven wallpaper is suitable for decorating not only walls, but also the ceiling. If you need to change the interior, they can be painted in the desired color.

If a cat can reach the non-woven wallpaper, it will gladly sharpen its claws on them, so it is best to combine them with high, durable panels.

Vinyl wallpapers

Vinyl wallpapers also consist of two layers - a base made of paper or non-woven fabric, and a decorative PVC coating, which can have different thicknesses and reliefs. This coating has many varieties, and one of them, which has become especially popular, is “silk-screen printing”.

Vinyl sheets have high strength and wear resistance, they are inert to ultraviolet radiation and retain their original color for many years. Such wallpapers can be called washable, as they are easily amenable to regular wet cleaning. The variety of colors and textures of this material is so great that they can be matched to any interior style.

If this particular finish is chosen to decorate the corridor, then it is not recommended to purchase wallpapers of dubious quality due to their low price, as they can be toxic. The best option for any of the rooms would be non-woven fabrics, as they are breathable.

fiberglass wallpaper

Wallpapers based on fiberglass have increased strength, as they contain strong fibers in their composition. This is an environmentally friendly material that can be painted after wall gluing with water-based or latex-based paints. Wallpapers are highly wear-resistant, their service life is about 30 years, and during this period they are able to freely withstand up to 15 repaints. The material does not crack at the corners when the structure shrinks, it does not burn, is water resistant and is not a nutrient medium for microflora colonies.

Wallpapering the corridor with wallpaper can be done independently

Many owners have already tried their hand at carrying out such a finish with their own hands. But if there is no relevant experience, then before starting this work, we recommend that you read the article on our portal.

Wall mural

Wall murals are made from various materials - they can be paper, non-woven, vinyl and fabric. For the corridor, it is best to choose a vinyl or non-woven version, as they have the characteristics suitable for this room.

Finishing material is also subdivided by texture. So, on sale you can find:

— Wallpaper with a smooth glossy and matte surface.

- Embossed wallpaper imitating sand, canvas and other fabric weaving, as well as a variety of three-dimensional drawings.

This finishing material can be decorated with images with different effects:

  • Background photo wallpaper decorated with frequent patterns of a vegetable or other direction, arranged in a certain order. They differ in that they do not have a specific plot. This option is suitable for decorating a corridor or hallway, but it is necessary to choose washable varieties or combine them with other materials.

Background decoration, depending on the choice of color and pattern, can visually expand or reduce the area of the room being decorated.

  • Panoramic wallpaper have images of natural or modern urban landscapes, balconies or small courtyards. They can also create a room-enlarging effect, so they are the best suited for decorating narrow rooms.
  • Photo wallpaper with realistic images are also often used to decorate the walls of corridors - these are photographs of flowers, grass, flowering trees, etc. Most often, these canvases have a three-dimensional 3D effect that creates the illusion of expanding space, or HD, in which the drawings have the clearest detail.
  • Subject photo wallpaper , on which large images of one or more objects are applied, are better suited for rooms with large areas, since in small rooms they will look ridiculous and visually reduce them. For a corridor, this is not the best option.

Have you tried wallpapering?

The question is not idle, since this finishing operation is quite complex, replete with nuances. in order to avoid mistakes and not spoil expensive material - read in a separate publication of our portal.

cork finish

Cork, which has antistatic properties, is fire resistant and non-hygroscopic, resistant to deformation, ultraviolet, and most importantly, to mechanical stress, will be an ideal finishing option for the corridor. Due to the strength of this material, it is not afraid of the claws and teeth of animals. Cork is an environmentally friendly material, it is very light in weight, which simplifies its installation on walls.

plastic panels

Cork is a natural material that perfectly insulates the room and makes the walls warm and pleasant to the touch. Cork finishing is produced in different versions - it can be wallpaper, plates and rolled canvas on a self-adhesive basis. The color scheme of the finishing elements is diverse, as it can have a large number of options, both plain and interspersed with different shades.

Cork finishing materials are made from oak bark growing in the Mediterranean. The peeled bark is cut into veneers, whole panels are prepared, or it is crushed into crumbs, followed by the production of wall and floor tiles, roll materials, baseless or paper-based wallpaper. Cork is used to decorate not only walls, but also other surfaces of the room.

In stores, you can find cork materials that require additional processing - they have a lower price. However, it is better to purchase a finish that does not need to be additionally applied with protective agents, since if this process is carried out incorrectly, it is quite possible to spoil the appearance of the coating.

  • Cork panels

Cork tiles or panels are made on a plywood or MDF basis, on which tongue-and-groove joints are made. This allows you to assemble individual elements into a single coating with almost invisible seams.

Another variant of cork slabs consists of three rather thin layers - the lower, which serves as the basis, the middle one, and the upper decorative one, interconnected with natural glue. This finishing material is decorated with cork veneer.

  • Roll web

Rolled cork cloth consists of two layers - pressed crumb, which is the basis, and decorative thin veneer. Cloths are glued on the surface of the walls and floor butt. After installation of such a finish, the sheets merge into a single coating with invisible seams of joints.

In addition to decorative, technical cork roll coatings are produced, which are used as substrates for other types of finishes. They are used as an effective insulating and soundproofing material.

  • Cork wallpaper

Cork wallpaper has a thickness of 1 to 4 mm. They can be baseless, like a roll web, or paper serves as the basis for them. Therefore, they are glued to prepared walls in much the same way as ordinary wallpapers, but, unlike them, they are able to mask small flaws on surfaces.

It should be noted that any cork material goes well with other finishes, so you can develop and implement various combined options.

Cork flooring is well suited for finishing walk-through rooms, both in terms of aesthetic and technical characteristics. The only thing that can stop you from choosing it is a rather high price.

Bamboo wall decoration

Finishing the corridor with bamboo is an excellent choice, as this material is highly durable and is not afraid of mechanical stress. In addition, it is an environmentally friendly and durable, easy-care material that can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner or a damp cloth.

Bamboo trim is produced in different forms - it can be rigid panels or wallpaper mats assembled from slats of different widths.

  • bamboo panels

For the manufacture of bamboo panels, one-piece trunks or their halves are most often used, but sometimes they are also assembled from slats glued to the base. They consist of one or two layers, are produced by hot pressing, while they can have different dimensions and thicknesses.

Bamboo pairs well with other finishes such as wallpaper or tiles that mimic flat stone options. Most often, panels are used to decorate the lower part of the walls, which are more in need of their protective functions. Bamboo is not afraid of cat claws and any pollution - the latter are easily removed by all available means. On the wall, the panels are fixed with the help of “liquid nails”, and installation, as a rule, does not pose any difficulties.

  • bamboo wallpaper

Bamboo wallpapers are made from slats, on which the inside of solid trunks is unfolded. The thickness of the canvases can vary from 3 to 5 mm. The slats are stitched with a thick strong thread, which makes them look like mats (which, by and large, they are). Most often, rolls of 10 × 0.92 m are found on sale.

Another version of the wallpaper made of this material has a base of technical gauze or rice paper, on which slats cut from the outer smooth part of the trunk, which is its bark, are glued. The width of the slats is from 8 to 20 mm, and the thickness is 1÷2 mm. A roll of such wallpaper has standard parameters, its length is 10,000 mm, and its width is 2500, 2000, 1500 and 1000 mm.

Wallpapers are produced in different design options - they can be plain or have a natural pattern characteristic of this material.

a natural stone

In terms of their decorative qualities, bamboo wallpapers are practically not inferior to panels. They can be combined with each other, but for this you need to choose harmonizing shades.

Bamboo wallpapers are fixed to the wall with PVA polymer glue. It is recommended to level the walls with drywall before their installation, on the primed surface of which they are fixed quite easily. If the material will be glued to another, more complex surface, then it is better to use “liquid nails” for installation work.

Plastic panels

PVC panels are an affordable and easy-to-install material that can, nevertheless, significantly transform any room. Such cladding provides great opportunities in planning your own version of the interior of the corridor, as it is produced in a rich variety of colors, ornamental and relief patterns, with a very reliable imitation of natural materials - the texture of wood, stone, sand, etc.

This material is very popular due to its aesthetic appearance, durability and relative strength. The panels are easily put in order with the help of wet cleaning, so they are perfect for finishing the walls of the corridor, both the lower part of the wall and all surfaces completely.

If PVC panels are chosen for finishing the corridor, then the repair will take place quickly and relatively cleanly, without unpleasant odors of paint and spilled glue.

With the help of this material, it is quite easy to level the surfaces of the premises, it becomes possible to hide cables and communication pipes without digging the walls. In addition, soundproofing material can be placed behind the panels.

The panels produced for interior decoration are an environmentally friendly material that does not emit harmful fumes.

The advantage of PVC panels is also that such a coating will not attract animals to itself, as it has a smooth surface that is not easy to grab with claws.

In order for the finish to meet all the qualities mentioned above, you should not purchase cheap materials. The stiffening ribs installed inside the panel should not be visible through the outer solid layers of plastic, and when pressed with your fingers, they should not be crushed.

The surface of the panels should not have deformations and dents, and the joining of individual lamellas should be easy, with the tongue fully entering the groove.

It is impossible not to recall that for the decoration of corridors and hallways it is necessary to choose PVC panels with a flammability category G1 or NG. They have a special treatment that makes them more resistant to ignition and melting even when heated to extremely high temperatures. This circumstance must be taken into account so that in emergency situations the exit from the apartment is not blocked by strong and toxic smoke or even open fire.

The process of installing PVC cladding on walls is available to everyone!

Any more or less “savvy” with basic building skills, the owner is able to perform such a cladding. How it is produced - read in a separate publication of our portal.

MDF or fiberboard panels

MDF is a fibreboard obtained by dry pressing fibers using urea resins. The outer side of the panels is decorated with a coating that imitates natural wood of different species or other natural materials. Some panels are covered with a special protective film - this process is called lamination.

In addition to MDF, fiberboard panels are also on sale, which have a lower cost, but experienced craftsmen still recommend choosing the first finishing option.

The essential difference between these materials lies in their technical characteristics:

  • MDF is a safer material than fiberboard, since the latter uses phenol-formaldehyde resins as a binder, which emit toxic fumes that can harm the health of apartment residents. MDF, from this point of view, is incomparably cleaner.
  • The strength of MDF is much higher than that of fiberboard finishes. Such panels are more resistant to external mechanical influences, which is very important for a room such as a corridor.
  • MDF, unlike fiberboard, has a water-repellent coating that allows for wet cleaning of walls without much regard for the frequency of this process.

However, for all its merits, MDF has a high flammability category - G4, and for different fiberboard models this parameter can be lower - from G1 to G4. Therefore, when choosing a finish, you must definitely pay attention to this characteristic.

Installation of both MDF and fiberboard is carried out in the same way, approximately in the same way as PVC panels and natural wooden lining: along the batten guides installed vertically or horizontally.

MDF panels are produced in different dimensional standards. Thickness usually varies from 6 to 14 mm, width - from 98 to 325 mm, and in length they are 1300 or 2600 mm, that is, they are perfect for filling floor-to-ceiling space in a standard city apartment.

MDF panels are produced in several variations, which are divided according to the production method, characteristics and color features. They can be:

  • Whole-pressed.
  • Laminated with a smooth glossy surface.
  • Moisture resistant, designed for rooms with high humidity.
  • Veneered, imitating the finish of natural wood or cork.
  • Painted with a special paint that can smooth out irregularities and create a glossy or matte surface.

Fake diamond

An artificial decorative stone is becoming quite a popular material for finishing the corridor. They either completely lay out the walls, or combine it with plastered or otherwise decorated surfaces.

Gypsum and cement based stone

The most common, which is used for decoration, is made on the basis of cement or gypsum using various plasticizing additives. This finishing material can be characterized as follows:

  • A wide variety of relief patterns and shades of artificial stone perfectly imitates a wide variety of natural materials.
  • Sufficiently high strength indicators guarantee the durability of the finish with properly executed masonry.
  • In case of accidental damage to the surface of the stone, they can be easily restored on their own, the main thing is to determine exactly what material it is made of. If the base is gypsum, then the restoration should be done only with this material (the same applies to cement).
  • If you have experience in laying ceramic tiles, it will not be difficult to finish the walls with artificial stone yourself.
  • Artificial stone also has several disadvantages:
  • Low resistance to abrasion of the surface of the material. Therefore, it will be necessary to periodically update the color or immediately cover the surface of the stone fixed to the wall with a varnish with high surface resistance (for example, polyurethane).
  • The cost of such a finishing material is quite high.

You can make artificial stone yourself!

If you want to save on the purchase of material and try your hand at this craft, the reader should read the article, which is located on the pages of our portal.

In addition to the above materials, more expensive ones are also used for manufacturing - they make a more durable artificial stone that is not subject to abrasion and mechanical damage.

acrylic stone

This kind of artificial stone is made from 75% mineral natural environmentally friendly materials that exude from white clay. In addition to it, it includes stone chips - it can be marble, granite, jasper and other minerals. The binder for the ingredients is acrylic resin (polymethyl methacryl). The color scheme is created by special natural pigments that are harmless to humans.

Thanks to all the above components, acrylic artificial stone is a very wear-resistant and durable material, so even items such as kitchen worktops and sinks are made from it.

quartz stone

Quartz artificial stone is more durable than acrylic, as it contains about 90% natural crushed quartz. It is more resistant to scratches and any other damage, and is also used not only as a decorative finish, but also for the manufacture of durable kitchen countertops.

Polyester resins serve as a binder for quartz and color pigments - thanks to these components, the material is stronger than granite. In addition to strength, quartz stone has such qualities as environmental friendliness and resistance to the appearance and development of microorganisms harmful to humans on it. This material is light in weight and easy to care for, it does not absorb dirt, and it is enough to periodically wipe it with a damp cloth.

The walls inside the premises, from a technical point of view, has no restrictions, since it is not combustible and does not contain substances harmful to humans. However, it is necessary to show a sense of proportion, otherwise the apartment will resemble some kind of cave. Therefore, most often stone trim is combined with decorative or ordinary plaster, and sometimes even just with wallpaper.

The stone is most often laid around doorways, or the corners of the room are finished with it, which will contribute not only to the decorative design, but also to the protection of the most vulnerable places on the walls to damage.

Single inserts of stone on the plastered surface of the walls are also possible. The main thing is to correctly think over the color scheme and the correct location of the finishing material.

Now, after getting acquainted with what finishes are best suited for the walls of the corridor, it will be easier for the reader to choose the best option, given the quality of materials, design style and, of course, their own financial capabilities. And let the video selection below with very interesting design solutions for decorating the corridor in the apartment be of help to him.

Video: There is a lot to learn - design options for finishing the corridor

Repair of the hallway is not complete without wall cladding, which are one of the most vulnerable places in the home. They suffer in case of mechanical damage, exposure to moisture, water, pollution, as well as from children's creativity or the claws of pets. The choice of finishing material should take into account a number of factors through which the best and most practical option is determined. To do this, you need to study the features and advantages of each type of decorative design of the walls of the hallway.

Finishing Features

The hallway always speaks eloquently about the owners of the apartment or house. It indicates their taste preferences, demonstrates well-being, and often betrays the habits of the household. It is important that this room creates the right idea, although the possibilities for decorating the corridor are often limited: the room lacks lighting, in most cases it does not have enough space, while it should contain the maximum of items needed by each household. Knowing this, the decoration of the hallway should be special.

This is not so much a decorative solution as a combination of beauty and practicality, a decoration tool that changes the aesthetic perception of space.

The decoration of the hallway is functional, its main tasks are:

  • unobtrusive organization and division of the area into separate functional zones;
  • maintaining the practicality of the walls by using raw materials that are resistant to regular care (including detergents);
  • visual increase in space, presenting it in a favorable light;
  • diverting attention from the unsightly design features of the room;
  • demonstration of the conformity of style to current fashion trends;
  • creating an atmosphere of home comfort.

The facing material used in the decoration of the walls of the hallway is diverse. Due to the wide range presented for sale by eminent brands, the cladding has a lot of advantages.

Depending on the type of material, the quantity used, it:

  • is manufactured using modern technologies on professional equipment, which improves the quality and practical characteristics of each type;
  • in any line it has a lot of collection materials, through which you can convey the uniqueness of the texture, its relief, relevance in a particular style;
  • has a wide choice of color schemes, allowing the harmonious incorporation of materials into any design technique;
  • allows you to finish the walls with modern materials, while choosing any historical period, bringing the right notes into the atmosphere of the hallway;

  • is able to visually increase the height of the walls, expand them relative to each other, align the broken perspective, change the temperature background of the room;
  • due to combination techniques, it allows you to save on the purchase of material, allowing you to use the remnants of the cladding in the decoration after finishing other rooms of the dwelling;
  • can be performed in any method of contrast, combining materials of different textures and compositions in the decoration;
  • due to the wide selection and different composition, it differs in price, which makes it possible for each buyer to decorate the walls of the hallway with the material they like, taking into account taste preferences and the budget available for the purchase.

Decorating the walls of the hallway allows you to express yourself, reveal your creative potential. This is a way to create positive emotions when entering any home. A distinctive feature of the cladding is the possibility of cladding with your own hands. Today, almost every head of the family can do this: manufacturers offer convenient finishing methods that seem complicated only at first glance.

In most of them, the materials are easy to work with, not capricious in care, it is pleasant to work with them, and the result is pleasing to the eye. This eliminates the need to call in repair teams, which often spoil the material and appearance of the finish, and attribute poor work to raw material shortcomings.

With a lot of advantages, finishing materials have disadvantages, they are:

  • almost always give out the cost of raw materials, so they need the right approach to choosing;
  • regardless of the variety, they compare all furnishings with themselves, forcing the furniture to correspond to the desired level;
  • in any category they have a classification, among which budget varieties are the weakest and most impractical;

  • based on the shortcomings of the usable area, they are limited in the choice of dark shades that hide the degree of illumination of the room;
  • cannot be completely lined with light colors, as they are impractical, get dirty and turn yellow over time;
  • limited in the use of large prints of texture or pattern, if the space of the room is insufficient;
  • in premium lines it is not always affordable, as they require the replacement of existing furniture along with wall cladding.

We take into account non-standard forms

In the decoration of the hallway, design features are of primary importance. Often the space is non-standard, may have narrow doorways, uncomfortable doors. Some types of rooms are combined, so the entrance hall must be separated from the living room. Sometimes the border of two rooms is a small partition or the hallway does not have a corridor. Other rooms have a slanted perspective, making design tricks difficult.

When finishing, any detail of a non-standard shape is taken into account. For example, in a long entrance hall of Khrushchev and a spacious studio apartment, wall cladding is radically different. In the first case, it is important to expand the area, in the second it is worth zoning the space, giving it an organization. Of particular importance are arches, ledges and niches, which make wall cladding difficult and require the correct placement of accents so as not to get lost in the general background. In such cases, it is necessary to combine the material in order to simplify the finishing work.

Decoration Materials

The construction market offers a lot of finishing materials that are applicable in decorating the walls of the hallway. It can be lining, leather trim or a more creative coating, as well as wall decor in the form of stickers. To date, there are 9 varieties of finishing material in demand in the decor of the walls of the hallway, these are:

Dye

A universal budgetary technique that anyone can use without special skills. This material refers to three types of paints: latex, acrylic and water-based. They are easy to use, fit well on the surface prepared for painting and reduce the time for wall cladding. The disadvantages of painting are the need to dry the painted surface and an unpleasant odor that can provoke an allergic reaction in sensitive households.

It is important to consider: after painting, the first time you need to protect the surface from mechanical damage.

Decorative plaster

This finish is distinguished by practicality and convenience, the original embossed surface. It is easy to clean, allows the use of wet sponges to clean the surface, is grainy, harmless to health and durable in use. Decorative plaster has breathability, harmoniously fits into various directions of style, has a wide range of textural techniques, color schemes.

The material is demanding on the preparation of the base, it does not look spectacular if the wall surface is curved. In addition, a professional stylish cladding effect is within the power of a master with a certain experience.

Microcement

The main component of the raw material is a mixture based on polymers and cement with an admixture of coloring pigments. This is a universal cladding that fits perfectly on different wall bases (concrete, wood, metal). It can have a different structure, have a relief, be smooth or rough, while being resistant to the claws of pets. At a price, microcement is cheaper than plaster, which saves the family budget well.

Wallpaper

Wallpaper is a classic design technique that allows you to combine with each other and play with the imperfections of space through the correct placement of accents. The lines include rolled, powder and "wet" wallpapers with a variety of textures, through which you can even out minor uneven walls and ceilings, strengthen the walls, make them warmer, save the room from unnecessary noise.

Wallpapers are distinguished by a huge selection of patterns, indicate any idea and premium design, demonstrating the delicate taste of the owners of the house. Different series include paper, vinyl, non-woven, textile, liquid wallpaper, photo printing, glass wallpaper, which can be painted about 20 times, cork and bamboo varieties, canvases with a three-dimensional 3D image.

Wall panels

This cladding includes materials made of wood, plastic, glass, drywall, wood-fiber boards (MDF). They wash well, do not require a perfectly flat wall surface for installation, hide problem areas of planes, are simple and quick to install and dismantle. Wall panels look stylish, beautiful and fashionable, they often imitate the texture of wood, brick, tiled and masonry. They can be installed instead of wallpaper, using raw materials in the form of strips, tiles or sheet material, hiding joints and seams with moldings. They serve up to 15 years, are resistant to mechanical damage, can be placed on the walls vertically, horizontally, at an angle.

Laminate

This finish is an alternative to wall panels. The material looks beautiful, stylish and expensive, able to imitate a variety of textures, easy to install and dismantle. Its surface is smooth, it is easy to maintain, reliable and aesthetic, it does not require preliminary preparation of the base.

But this facing is inappropriate in rooms with high humidity: the back side of the laminate absorbs moisture, which leads to deformation of the finish, the formation of waves and soaking, which cannot be eliminated.

Fake diamond

Wall decoration with decorative stone is an expensive type of hallway wall decoration. Its aesthetic properties and strength are quite high. The basis of the material is gypsum, so this finish is recognized as environmentally friendly. More often, the stone is placed along the bottom of the walls of the hallway: in places most prone to mechanical damage.

Such cladding is durable, differs in relief, provides for painting and correcting damaged areas, which is extremely rare. Laying is carried out exclusively on a smooth and even surface.

Tile

One of the universal methods of wall cladding, characterized by moisture resistance and cost-effectiveness. The tile tolerates any cleaning, is a practical material, easy to use and affordable in price, it has a long service life, a lot of different patterns in various shades. In terms of performance, it is better than wall panels; it does not change its properties in any type of room, regardless of temperature changes or degrees of humidity. The brightness of the shades does not change over a long period of time, the pattern is not erased from the surface.

Fresco

This finish looks rich and unique, indicating the special taste of the owners of the house. This is an elegant type of wall decor that is difficult to clad and has a high cost. The material has a base in the form of interlining, synthetic materials and inclusions of plaster, marble chips. It is distinguished by the appearance of an aged surface in the form of cracks, texture chips.

Wall niche design

Decorating niches depends on the general idea of \u200b\u200bdesign. At the same time, it can be decorated to match, or it can have a contrast of the main or accent finishing cladding. Its finish depends on the type of surface and almost always emphasizes the presence, thereby giving the niche a special significance as a functional and decorative element of the interior. In addition to the decoration itself, a niche is often decorated with lamps, complementing the central lighting, regardless of the rectangular or arched shape. If the room space is sufficient, the niche is a kind of mini-exhibition, demonstrating the style, decorating with figurines, paintings, frescoes.

It is easier to paint it in any color, in other cases, the design technique involves a combination of surface painting and wallpapering the walls. Often, a bright accent in the form of a panel or a picture is glued over the location of the niche.

Each technique is subject to the rule of combining texture, shade, style themes. Design often involves the use of glass and moldings.

Choosing a finish color

Color preferences are individual. In the hallway, it is not customary to fill the space with white: it is good in the picture, but in reality it is completely impractical. Light spots that increase the area are best chosen in shades of beige. At the same time, it is better if the shade is matte and warm: cold tones do not tune in to positive, they give the interior despondency.

The priority is delicate peach, coffee, nude and bronze tones, made in contrast with gold, silver and white decor, a shade of bleached wenge oak.

Dark and aggressive colors are best avoided: they change the aesthetic perception of the hallway for the worse. Purple, red, blue colors are not allowed. If you need brightness, you should pay attention to wood tones, coral, sandy yellow, pink, olive, terracotta, brick colors of the color palette. Monochrome combinations should be avoided: they are out of place in this finish.

Wall design options and decor

The entrance hall is the place where it is best to apply design combination techniques in the design. This will allow you to beat the shortcomings of space and use the facing material in accordance with zones of varying degrees of load. You can decorate the walls with your own hands, if necessary, giving the space the right tone and mood. To make the design beautiful, you need to prepare a sketch, indicating the places of decor.

After drawing up a rough plan, choose the material. More often it is a combined finish, with which it is easier to decorate the walls of the hallway. For example, it can be a combination of tiles and laminate, panels with which it is easier to sheathe walls, make corners, and wallpaper with which you can paste over the top of walls or certain ledges. You can decorate the walls with the help of paintings, a pattern lined with liquid wallpaper or decorative stickers, gluing them over the facing material.

This technique is especially relevant when combining cladding: this way you can combine different materials together.

The corridor is the first room that people enter when they enter from the street. Its decoration should combine the beauty and taste of the owner, as well as the quality and durability of materials and furniture.

To choose a method for decorating the walls of the corridor, it is necessary to study the features and advantages of each type of decorative material.

Features of finishing the corridor

The entrance hall serves as a place where people undress when they come in from the street and gather before leaving the house. It should be roomy and comfortable, household members should not crowd into it and bump into walls or furniture. How to decorate a corridor depends on its size.

In a small hallway, you can put a narrow wardrobe with mirrored doors to visually enlarge the space, or hang hooks directly on the wall in a minimalist style. A high shelf nailed to the wall will look good, there are hooks under it, and below it is a small bench for shoes with an upper level in the form of a bench on which you can sit.

The mirror cabinet will completely transform the hallway, visually expand the walls and create an original play of light.

It is easier to pick up furniture in a large hallway. Here you can put a wardrobe, and a dressing table, and a long wall. There are a lot of corridor decor options, if space allows, place an additional cabinet or chest of drawers to put all sorts of little things - keys, bracelets, sunglasses, scarves, caps and more.

It will be easier to decorate a spacious hallway beautifully if you clearly follow the chosen style direction.

When decorating a corridor in an apartment or house, you need to take into account the general style of housing, match colors to the range. Visually make the hallway pleasant and cozy will help two tips:

  1. A small corridor will look good in pastel colors. You can diversify it by choosing a pattern in the form of geometric shapes. Mirrors will add light, and if you need to separate the hallway from the nearest room, then use sliding translucent doors.
  2. Zone a long corridor with furniture, arches or ceiling beams. Furniture is better not to pile up, choose modest options in bright colors.

The corner of the corridor can be made interesting by installing a wardrobe with painted doors or hanging a decorative mirror, which is important for a small space. In an average square corridor, standard corner furniture, any colors, would be more appropriate.

Dark brown and black corridor looks expensive and elegant, especially with light patterns on the walls. But this option is suitable for wide hallways, otherwise the room will look cramped, dull and even have a pressing effect.

Fashionable and budgetary renovation of the walls in the corridor with taste is not a problem now. Designers offer a lot of types of furniture, manufacturers offer a variety of materials for floors and walls, so it remains to choose according to your taste.

Wall finishing options

How to finish the corridor is an important point, which primarily concerns materials. You need to choose durable products so that the floor is easy to wash, the wallpaper repels dirt and does not absorb moisture, and the lighting allows you to “quickly put on a marathon” before going out.

When choosing a wall finish, it’s not enough to rely only on your taste, you need to take into account the characteristics of the materials.

The decoration of the corridor is different for private houses and apartments. For the first, you need to choose the most durable and easily washable materials, since a person immediately brings all the dirt into the housing, and does not leave part of it in the vestibule or on the stairwell.

If you want to make the walls light, then it is better to divide them into two parts - the bottom is dark (about 50 cm), and everything else is light. So the dirt from shoes and the hems of raincoats will not be so noticeable.

Wallpaper finishing

Wallpapering the walls of the corridor is a cheap, simple and good option for a hallway of any size and purpose. Your Khrushchev or country cottage corridor with wallpaper will be elegant and neat if you choose the right design. There are no strict requirements in the color scheme, although most prefer light (beige, cream, coffee, white) or dark tones (burgundy, brown, dark green, black, dark purple). It is difficult to choose beautiful wallpaper for the corridor in bright colors.

A huge range of wallpapers allows you to make the interior of the hallway really interesting.

When choosing wallpaper, choose washable, wear-resistant materials. Wallpaper with patterns has proven itself well. They allow you to hide flaws - mud splashes, constant leanings, hooks from waving an umbrella or bag. And if there are children in the house, then they will perfectly hide all traces of their active stay in the hallway immediately after the street.

What wallpaper options are there, and how to choose them correctly:

The color of the wallpaper should be slightly different from the color of the furniture. If the walls are cold (gray, blue), then the furniture should be warm and bright, if the wallpaper is colorful and even more so with a pattern, then the furniture should be light.

In a large hallway, you can safely use your favorite wallpaper with large drawings

Finishing with decorative stone

Decorating the inside of the hallway with stone looks rich and elegant. Designers advise choosing not natural, but artificial material for wall decoration. It costs much less, but in fact is stronger and better withstands temperature changes.

In a small hallway, a stone framed doorway will look spectacular

It is not necessary to fill the entire wall with stone, but only part of it. Stone walls are found only in palaces.

You can lay out a pattern from a stone or cover only one of several walls with it. The color of the material must be chosen to match the room. See how well the chosen option will be combined with the floor finish. And it is better not to combine several types of stone, but to focus on one.

wood finish

The idea of decorating the walls of the hallway with a tree will not only give the room comfort, but also make it really warmer. But wooden walls look appropriate only in some styles - country, Provence, Russian hut. But you can’t fit this material into modern or high-tech.

Light wood wall decoration, complemented by bright decor

Dark wood paneling in the hallway of a country house

There is another option for finishing the walls in the corridor - use solid wood panels, but you need to be careful with them so as not to overdo it. This design is suitable for large massive corridors with laconic furniture, so as not to overload the visual environment.

MDF panels

MDF panels are quite strong and durable, they imitate solid wood and look good in a room of any size. For modest hallways, the best option is a light wide panel, and for large corridors there are many options. This finish is often used in Provence and country styles. Decorating the walls in the corridor with panels will increase the space, which is important for narrow hallways.

Composite panels can have different colors and textures.

And others

Finding how to decorate the walls in the corridor other than wallpaper is not difficult. Even plastering and painting can be appropriate. Although these materials are not the most durable and require periodic updating, in some cases they are even advantageous. Plus they are cheap.

For painting the walls of the hallway, you should choose waterproof compounds that can withstand repeated laundering from dirt.

Floor finishing examples

There are a number of requirements for the material used to finish the floor in the corridor:

  1. Moisture resistant.
  2. Resistance to chemical agents (salt and other things that are often used in winter and brought into the hallway with shoes).
  3. High wear resistance for long service life.
  4. Ability to hold a lot of weight.
  5. It washes well and is difficult to get dirty (the grooves become clogged with dirt, and it is directly absorbed into the linoleum).
  6. Environmental friendliness and safety.

It is worth choosing according to external qualities. The coating should be pleasing to the eye, fit into the design.

Floor options

To finish the floor in the corridor use:

  • Linoleum - it is better to take a homogeneous, painted over the entire surface, durable and non-slip.

    It is better to close the far part of the corridor with linoleum, and use more durable material for the entrance area, for example, tiles

  • Tile - quartz vinyl is most often used for corridors, as it has all the necessary qualities and can last for decades. Ceramic also withstands loads well and is easy to clean, but you need to choose the option for the floor (it has increased strength).

    The color of ceramic tiles is selected based on the size of the corridor

  • Natural stones - granite is best, although it is not cheap. Marble will not last long and will quickly begin to lose its qualities under the influence of chemical agents.

    The stone covering will ideally fit into the interior of a rustic style.

  • Laminate - has a service life of up to 15 years and a lot of color options. The advantage of this coating is that it can be installed independently.

    When choosing a laminate, you should take into account the wear resistance class - the material intended for public places will last the longest

  • Parquet is a finicky material that requires frequent maintenance. If you have already decided to finish the floor in the corridor with them, then choose boards from ash, oak, birch, beech.

    Parquet is often chosen for the floor of the corridor in a classic style.

Some use carpet for finishing the floor in the hallway, it is soft, beautiful, but absolutely not practical. It will need to be constantly cleaned of dirt, stains quickly eat in, and the pile can be taken in where people constantly put on shoes. Therefore, it can be used only if the shoeing takes place in the vestibule, otherwise it is solid nerves.

Creating lighting in a room

Hallways rarely have access to street light, so you need to try to replace the lack of sun with artificial lighting. Basic Rules:

  1. Since it is light during the day in other rooms, it should be light in the corridor from the lamps.
  2. Powerful ceiling lights save space and energy costs.
  3. If possible, install mirrors and transparent partitions, they reflect light.
  4. In narrow corridors, it is better to direct the light upwards, and not at the walls.
  5. In large hallways, you can install several types of lamps. So less electricity consumption and more parts.

The chandelier must be in the corridor, the size depends on the room. Also, small lamps around the perimeter can be mounted in the ceiling, a false ceiling can be made directly above the entrance with separate lighting. If the style allows and the corridor is long, then wall lamps will be appropriate along the wall.

To illuminate a small hallway, one small chandelier is enough

In a long corridor, it is better to use several overhead lights

The choice of furniture in the corridor

When choosing furniture for the corridor, the following nuances are taken into account:

  1. For small spaces, narrow cabinets or chests of drawers are needed.
  2. For large hallways, it is quite possible to install a closet, especially if there is a niche in the room.
  3. The style of furniture in the hallway should match the style of the rest of the home.
  4. Furniture with mirror surfaces and in light colors visually enlarges the space, while dark furniture reduces it.
  5. There is not enough space - we hang everything and fasten it to the wall, nothing is put on the floor except for a shelf for shoes.

Correct placement

The arrangement of furniture entirely depends on the size of the corridor. Here, it is impossible to immediately highlight the key rules, but you can give a number of tips:

Furniture manufacturers offer universal options for different types of premises. Already in the catalogs it is described for which corridor the cabinet or cabinet is suitable.

There are a lot of options for finishing the corridor and hallway for different styles of housing. You can look at and choose from the most popular sketches, or just take note of unusual solutions and details. In case of complete unwillingness or inability to independently choose a design for the corridor, you can turn to professionals.

Brick wall decoration in the loft-style hallway

The decoration of the corridor does not have to be trusted by designers. You can rely on your taste, use the above tips and choose everything from coverage to furniture. And it is not necessary to take the most expensive goods, budget items are now produced in very good quality.

Photos of ideas for decorating the corridor

The walls of the hallway in an apartment or a country house are finished with durable materials that are resistant to frequent use.

General finishing rules

Hallways in city apartments have a modest footage, are not equipped with windows, and go into a common corridor. Furnishings include a closet or hanger for seasonal clothes, a mirror, a chest of drawers or a shelf for storing keys. Owners of spacious apartments or country houses complement the decor of the corridor with banquettes, chairs or sofas.

The difficulty of finishing the room is the need to fit pieces of furniture in a narrow space, without interfering with the opening and closing of doors that open into a common corridor. Before buying materials, you need to choose the color scheme, the texture of the materials that are combined with each other.

Color spectrum

A simple option is to finish the room to match the entire apartment, it is recommended to choose shades a little lighter in order to visually expand the space. Neutral tones:

  • beige;
  • sand;
  • grey;
  • aquamarine.

They are combined with different styles of decoration and a large number of accessories.

Bright contrasting ornaments, floral or ethnic motifs in the decoration will suit the owners of spacious apartments. Such wallpapers suggest moderate decoration of the room with mirrors or paintings.

The traditional beige or cream range is suitable for any apartment. Shades give visual "warmth" to the interior, smooth out the low level of illumination in the room.

Cold tones are combined with an abundance of mirrors, require the installation of additional lamps, the interior as a whole looks more "airy".

Unusual finish colors form the interior in eclectic, hi-tech or loft styles. A bright room in red, orange, turquoise shades attracts attention, becomes the accent of the whole apartment.

The color scheme of the wallpaper should be combined with the shade of the door panels that are placed in the hallway.

  • Most of the doors are designed “under the tree”, so the walls in brown, beige or sandy shades will make up a harmonious ensemble with canvases.
  • Owners of transparent or frosted glass doors are free to choose the color scheme.
  • The entrance hall in an apartment without installed door panels (for example, in a studio) should be finished in the same shade as the rest of the premises.

Texture selection

A pronounced volumetric texture is characteristic of decorative plaster, wood panels, drywall or plastic. It is chosen as an accent, while the rest of the finish should be discreet.

For example, if the doorways in the apartment are finished in the form of round arches (without door panels), the pronounced texture will emphasize the boundaries of the room. Owners of traditional hallways with an abundance of doors are advised to choose a three-dimensional texture and light-colored finishes.

The texture of natural material (or its imitation) is suitable for eco-style, Scandinavian or minimalist interiors. Wooden, stone or ceramic panels are combined with most accessories, "fit" into loft, hi-tech, Provence, classic interior styles.

Material combination

The general style of decoration depends on the area of the hallway, the level of its illumination.

The owners of standard mini-corridors, which house the entrances to all the premises of the apartment, decorate the walls with a combination of two materials. Usually these are plain wallpapers and wide light-colored wooden skirting boards that are in harmony in color and size with the ceiling fillets.

Apartments with spacious halls that turn into a corridor can be decorated with several materials.. For example, a combination of wood paneling on the bottom half of the walls and wallpaper on the top half creates a retro-inspired room. Hallways in country houses for large families are decorated with durable artificial stone and plaster.

Large bright hallways, halls in the "old fund", private houses and spacious apartments are equipped with separate windows. The walls in such rooms are finished with several materials:

  • artistic painting (frescoes);
  • stucco;
  • miniature niches with statues.

Methods for combining materials

The walls are finished with wear-resistant materials, the lower part is decorated with wide wooden skirting boards, artificial stone panels, and hardwoods. This protects the surface from mechanical damage.

Bright textures made of artificial or composite materials (fiberglass, ceramic tiles, laminate, textured plaster) create accents in the interior. For example, tiles, frescoes or figured wooden panels decorate doorways, decorative compositions.

Contrasting colors or texture materials create a strict classic interior. For example, the combination of light textured plaster with dark walnut lacquered panels creates a vintage flavor of the room.

Advice

Dense non-woven wallpaper in combination with wide plastic baseboards and fillets are suitable for a modest hallway. A small ornament, laconic colors and the brilliance of such wallpapers create an “elegant” hallway.

The design of the walls of the hallway creates the style of the room, visually increases its size. Finishing materials should be combined in color and texture. Surfaces are finished:

  • skirting boards;
  • dumbbells;
  • wallpaper.

As a decor I use wooden or stone elements. The owners of spacious halls with windows add frescoes, niches, statues, a dense layer of textured plaster to the design.

Traditional hallway decor

The choice of materials for decoration depends on the style of the interior, the area of the hallway, the level of load on the room, and the available budget. Inexpensive ways to decorate - painting walls, wallpapering, paneling that imitates natural materials.

wall painting

A quick option for wall decoration is to paint them with matte or glossy paint. Depending on the density and chemical composition, there are oil, acrylic or water-based paints. To decorate the hallway, several colors and textures are combined.

Quick option for walls - painting

A two-level combination of dark and light tones of the same range is suitable for decorating narrow hallways. Light paint occupies the upper half of the walls, visually expanding the space and increasing the illumination of the room. A dark shade is placed closer to the floor level, this protects the hallway from pollution, emphasizes the geometry of the room.

Universal combinations:

  • sandy and chocolate;
  • gray and blue;
  • turquoise and bottle green shades.

Black and white scale requires a high level of illumination, therefore it is often found in spacious halls with windows.

Universal combinations - sandy and chocolate

The combination of glossy and matte textures looks less noticeable than the choice of contrasting colors, so it is suitable for miniature hallways. The transition between surfaces can be smooth (classic two-level version), geometric (glossy texture "goes" into the matte in the form of corners), have a soft wavy shape.

Glossy paint decorate doorways, spaces around mirrors or lamps. The transition line is decorated with:

  • textured plaster;
  • sequins;
  • thin strips of PVC film of different colors.

Placement of accents in the room is a way to emphasize the strict geometry of space, to give zest to a laconic classic interior. A dark shade of paint decorates doorways, the area near the baseboards, in some cases - ceiling fillets.

Advantages and disadvantages of painting

Painting the walls of the hall does not require large expenses, finishing is done in a few days, the choice of colors and textures is huge. The main disadvantage of staining is the cost of purchasing special equipment and protecting furniture from droplets of the composition. Cheap paints can be toxic, it is advisable for apartment owners to leave for the period of repair.

The combination of several shades and textures of paint creates an original interior, plastic material allows smooth transitions, placement of accents. The traditional design of the hallway combines a dark and light shade of paint. Glitters pasted on the drying paint will help to create a bright style.

Wall decoration with wallpaper

Using wallpaper in the hallway is the most budgetary and fastest option for redecorating this room. The choice of texture, color scheme and width of the wallpaper roll is subject to the rules.

wallpaper texture

Rolls with a pronounced texture that imitates wood, brickwork, textiles or plaster will suit the owners of a hallway with smooth walls. Such wallpapers are heavy, look catchy, require additional lighting.

On a note

Light shades, small shimmer or floral ornaments are suitable for Provence, vintage, high-tech interiors.

Owners of miniature hallways with a lack of natural light choose wallpaper with a glossy reflective texture that visually expands the space. The abundance of "mirror" particles gives the interior airiness, diverts attention from furniture and decor. Such wallpapers are lightweight, do not require wall alignment, easily fit on a rough surface, and are combined with most styles.

Wallpaper based on natural materials:

  • bamboo;
  • silks;
  • veneer;
  • velvet;

Suitable for large halls, decorated in the same style. For example, bamboo wallpaper is a bright attribute of eco-style, wall covering with imitation of velvet is common in retro style.

Wallpaper colors

Plain wallpaper with sequins, small geometric or floral patterns are suitable for modest hallways. Warm sandy, creamy, navy or woody colors go well with most materials. Cold shades, bright colors, an abundance of contrasts create a “juicy” interior, which is best complemented with light-colored furniture.

Wallpaper in 3D technique creates a three-dimensional image, which is placed on one of the walls of the room in compliance with the rules:

  • The image must be abstract. Flowers, animals, landscapes, geometric compositions will not overload the interior, tire the eyes of the owners.
  • The color scheme and the general style of the picture should overlap with the rest of the interior. For example, if the whole apartment is finished with "rough" textures in dark shades, a bright industrial landscape will become the center of the hallway.
  • They have wallpaper on a free wall, the amount of furniture and accessories should be minimized. Otherwise, the hall will be overloaded with details, the overall impression will be disturbed.

Advantages and disadvantages of wallpapering

An easy way to update the finish is available for hallways of different sizes, wallpapers have many textures and colors, they are easy to replace if damaged. However, high-quality wallpapers have a high price, the finishing procedure takes time and skill, the material is sensitive to moisture.

Decorating the hallway with textured wallpaper in neutral shades is a universal option for updating the interior with an abundance of wall accessories. Artistic wallpaper creates a bright design, textured material is suitable for a minimalist finish. The combination of several colors and textures will visually expand the hallway, place the necessary accents.

Paneling

The panels visually reduce the unevenness of the walls in the hall, they will suit the owners of apartments in the "old fund", owners of country houses with open wiring. Paneling does not require preparatory work, is carried out quickly, updates the room. There are several materials for wall panels.

Plastic panels

Inexpensive and durable material for finishing the hallway, which improves the sound insulation in the room, is not afraid of moisture.

The visual design of PVC panels is varied: the surface is decorated with drawings, patterns, a glossy or matte finish is used. Finishing can imitate a wooden, plastered, textile-lined wall.

The combination of high-gloss paneling in a rich shade and paintable wallpaper in a neutral tone creates a neat, durable finish.

Panels from chipboard and MDF

The material is suitable for decorating a Scandinavian-style hallway, giving an unobtrusive retro flavor. Such panels imitate the surface of a tree, are made in neutral shades, combined with catchy accessories.

Advice

It is better for owners of small hallways to choose wide panels with tight joints that look like a single canvas.

Light wood panels can completely cover the walls of the hallway in the style of country, provence, retro. Carved decorations made of natural wood will give the room a touch of classic antiquity.

Panels made from natural materials

Wall cladding with wood panels is suitable for owners of well-lit rooms with a low level of humidity. The material does not require additional decor, they create an interior in classic or eco styles.

Cork wall panels are popular among owners of small hallways. The pronounced texture and various colors of the material are complemented by an abundance of mirrors, lamps, and wide skirting boards.

Ceramic panels (tiles)

Making the hall with ceramic tiles with a matte or glossy surface will protect the room from moisture, visually align the walls. Depending on the color range and dimensions, ceramic wall tiles create a classic, palatial or minimalist interior.

Wide borders, a combination of several colors and sizes of tiles form a bright interior. Moroccan tiles of small elements in contrasting colors decorate the doorways and baseboards in the lobby.

Advantages and disadvantages of paneling

Before paneling, the walls do not need to be leveled, the material is affordable, it masks communications in the house.

The disadvantages of such a finish include the need for professional installation, a decrease in the usable area of \u200b\u200bthe room, the difficulty of updating the finish in the future.

Paneling is a quick way to update the interior of an old house without a major overhaul. Depending on the chosen material, the panels create a strict or eclectic interior. The two-level decoration of the hall with wooden panels and plaster imitates half-timbered houses.

Artistic finishing methods

Regardless of the materials chosen, the color of the hallway is easy to create with the help of artistic painting, a combination of several textures or materials. Popular solutions include:

imitation brick wall

The popularity of the loft style leads to the emergence of various ways to imitate a brick wall in the hallway. Classical brickwork is covered with light-colored paint, creating a laconic interior.

An easy way to create "brickwork" is to sheathe the walls with PVC panels that mimic classic brick. This option is suitable for owners of apartments in houses with thin walls who want to complete the decoration quickly.

More authentically brickwork imitates textured plaster, varnished. Installation requires surface preparation, while it tolerates the installation of additional decor and increases sound insulation in the room.

The owners of spacious rooms will suit decorative facing bricks, which lay out the walls. This option creates an authentic loft-style interior, requires large financial investments, long-term work.

Apartments in the "old stock" or classic lofts converted from industrial premises do not need additional materials. It is enough to clean the layer of plaster, varnish the brickwork, install several forged lamps.

Advantages and disadvantages of the "brick" wall

An up-to-date, inexpensive and durable way to give the hall a touch of loft style has a number of disadvantages. Performing a high-quality imitation of a brick wall requires special materials and knowledge; such a finish without an abundance of textiles looks rough and requires regular cleaning.

Imitation brickwork occupies a central position in the hallway, it is recommended to decorate it in neutral light shades. Forged lamps or wooden decor placed on the wall will help to give comfort to the hallway. You can imitate brickwork using panels, decorative plaster or thin facing bricks.

Artistic wall painting is suitable for fans of palace interiors, empire styles, art deco. Visually, this finish looks catchy and unusual; for frescoes, floral ornaments, landscapes, and patterns are chosen.

The walls are painted on a layer of raw plaster of various shades. A universal option is a gray or white shade of walls with a contrasting pattern.

Textures of finished frescoes

  • The traditional option is a surface with a rough relief; close up, the image looks a little blurry. This decor option requires careful leveling of the surface, moderate use of accessories.
  • Frescoes with imitation of painting on fabric outwardly look like dense hand-made damask wallpaper; portraits and images of buildings look good on such a texture.
  • A fresco with the effect of cracks, characteristic of ancient buildings, will add a vintage flavor to the room.

Advantages and disadvantages of frescoes

The original solution gives the room a vintage style, complements the palace interiors, does not require additional decor. The disadvantages of frescoes include their high price, the need to prepare the walls, the difficulty of combining with other interior styles.

  • landscapes;
  • still lifes;
  • ornaments.

This finish becomes the accent of the hallway, involves the use of neutral colors in the interior. It is better to place the image on a free wall so as not to overload the room.

Owners of narrow hallways with poor lighting use textured plaster with reflective particles. The material creates a more expressive texture than ordinary wallpaper, while decor options are limited by the owner's imagination.

A simple decoration option is the use of glitters, granite chips, color in the composition. Finished walls have a light shade, a pronounced texture, the surface shines and reflects light.

Figured rollers or ready-made stamps create a single ornament on the entire surface of the walls. To create a bright interior, the pattern is shaded with paint or sparkles. Venetian plaster imitates marble textures of various shades, in combination with frescoes and stucco molding, gives a touch of the palace interior.

Advantages and disadvantages of textured plaster

The material visually levels the surface, allows you to imitate various surfaces, create harmonious patterns. The disadvantages of plaster are its:

  • high price;
  • exposure to moisture;
  • lengthy finishing work.

The processing of the walls of the hallway with textured plaster creates an original interior, allows for the abundant use of decor. Unlike wallpaper, the pattern on the plaster does not need to be joined, it is possible to combine several layers of material. A pronounced texture or glitters create a festive mood.

Natural or acrylic (artificial) stone is used for solid wall decoration or accents in the decoration of the hallway.

Facing the hallway with stone creates a laconic interior in an industrial style. Material complement:

  • massive accessories;
  • an abundance of lighting;
  • large mirrors.

Finishing with stone doorways, corners and skirting boards looks softer. The combination of textured plaster with white natural stone creates a country style.

When choosing a stone for facing, they follow the rule: the more pronounced the relief, the smaller the size of each slab.

Advantages and disadvantages of stone finishing

Facing with stone panels gives the interior of the hallway monumentality, the material is durable, suitable for most styles of decoration. The disadvantages of stone finishing include its high price, the laboriousness of the work carried out and the large weight of the material.

With the help of stone panels, accents are placed in the interior of the hallway: they frame doorways, mirror panels, and baseboards. The cladding of the entire room creates a monumental interior in an industrial or vintage style. Separate stone elements go well with bright accessories, neutral plaster.

Wall laminate cladding

Wooden panels are installed on a free wall as an accent of the hallway interior. It is recommended to choose wide boards with a pronounced wood texture, the rest of the walls are decorated with plaster or wallpaper for painting.

The traditional laying of the herringbone laminate visually expands the space, the parallel one increases the height of the ceilings. It is recommended to avoid short narrow boards that require the installation of additional lighting.

The rough surface of the wall laminate looks softer, parquet varnishing gives the interior a vintage touch. A glossy surface reflects light better, looks more elegant.

Advantages and disadvantages of wall laminate

The bright texture of natural wood creates a modern unusual interior, the material is environmentally friendly, combined with most colors. Laminate installation requires preparatory work, the material is sensitive to changes in temperature and humidity, the rest of the finish must be neutral.

Narrow panels lined with glossy or matte laminate zone the space of the corridor. Natural wood tones are combined with warm colors, auxiliary lighting and decorative mirrors.

Mirror surfaces visually expand the space of the hallway, increase illumination, and give the room comfort. The joints between the panels are made out with an aluminum profile or grout with glitter.

Narrow high mirror panels are placed in the center of the hallway, they are used as a decorative element, replacing the traditional mirror.

The free part of the wall or the corners of the room are laid out with small mirror panels, dividing the hallway into functional zones. Facing the upper part of the walls significantly increases the height of the ceiling, gives the interior an "airiness".
