3D panels on the wall - an original solution for interior decoration

Unlike wallpaper, 3D panels on the ceiling or wall allow you to make a really unusual decor in living rooms, up to creating the illusion of space distortion.

Previously, the walls were sheathed with wooden panels, it was considered prestigious. Then, in country houses, lining, chipboard and, later, MDF panels began to be used to cover internal surfaces. All these are finishing materials that were supposed to replace the wallpaper. However, today more modern cladding panels have appeared, with a 3D relief on the surface. Let's see what it is. Three-dimensional imaging was once used only in computer games, then it was applied in films, and finally in virtual reality. But over time, 3D elements appeared in the design, among which 3D relief panels occupy not the last place.

Modern cladding panels with 3D relief

These finishing materials are often made entirely of polyvinyl chloride, gypsum, glass, fiberboard and chipboard. Also, the base can be separately made of aluminum, bamboo, MDF, and only the final, finishing coating will convey one or another relief. Textured coating can be leather, enamel or acrylic paint, PVC film and even veneer. The most expensive are glued volumetric panels made of natural wood, especially from valuable species.. Cast glass 3D panels are also very expensive, especially with internal decorative fillers.

2

Despite the fact that the panels are called aluminum, this metal is used only as a base. The technical process of manufacturing such a finishing material is rather complicated, but if simplified, the image is applied by perforating and bending the bridges between the holes and slots. Further, the resulting irregularities are covered with a thin film of polyvinyl chloride, and thus a texture is created that conveys the relief decor with smooth or sharp changes in height.

Aluminum 3-D panels

The main advantage of aluminum 3D panels is their lightness, which increases due to perforation and cutting of metal sheets. In addition, high strength should be taken into account, due to which the probability of deformation is significantly reduced both during installation and during operation. Wall cladding with such material is possible only on a specially assembled profile frame or on a wooden crate; it is technically impossible to glue aluminum panels.

3

This material is very fragile, but, despite the low resistance to mechanical stress, it is quite reliable and durable. The fact is that even with a sheet thickness of 0.5 centimeters (this is a possible minimum), the panels fixed to the wall acquire a certain strength due to their snug fit to the crate. But even if such a sheet breaks, the fragments will be like those of an automobile windshield, with rounded edges. Therefore, you can not be afraid to sheathe glass with 3D relief in living rooms where there are children; if damaged, it is almost impossible to cut yourself with fragments.

Sheathing walls with glass with 3D relief

As for the decorative properties of the textured surface, they are most pronounced in glass. As mentioned above, the minimum thickness of the panel is 0.5 centimeters, but you need to take into account the relief thickening, which can add up to 1-1.5 centimeters. In some cases, such protrusions can hide various fibers under them, as well as patterns. As a rule, the surface of glass panels is smooth and the structure is transparent, but there are also matte options.

Mounting of 3D glass cladding can be carried out with screws only if the holes are bored so that the fasteners sink flush, otherwise it is better to fix the panels with glue.

4

It would seem that both are wood, but there is a difference between them. To begin with, you can get lumber from ordinary wood species (or valuable ones), which, in fact, are used to create panels. Most often, these are glued structures, the base of which is assembled from thin strips, often of different thicknesses, so that a relief is immediately formed. Next, bars or plates of a certain shape are glued on top, often with a given height difference in different areas. It turns out beautiful wooden 3D panels for wall cladding, which are then varnished.

Bamboo upholstery elements

Bamboo can be applied in a variety of ways. Most often, a trunk sawn into plates is used, a 3D panel is glued from the resulting planks. Moreover, thin bamboo plates are easily bent to the desired position, interesting patterns can be made from them. But there are also eco-panels made from crushed bamboo, the fibers of which are mixed with resins and pressed into sheets with a complex textured surface. In terms of strength, such sheathing material is superior to fiberboard, chipboard and MDF, and the decor from it looks much more spectacular.

5

Textured polyvinyl chloride panels are considered today to be almost a budget option among other wall cladding materials. PVC is convenient primarily because it can be given any, the most complex shape, by casting panels according to a pre-prepared template. It can be used as a molded panel or as a basis for a decorative coating, which is used as leather or suede, veneer, acrylic.

Textured PVC panels

There are several types of 3D for ceilings and walls: perforated, glossy, mirrored and textured, that is, painted. Also, some manufacturers offer transparent plastic for installing internal panel lighting, which will emphasize the decor of the room. Add-on panels are usually much more expensive than cast panels and require special care, especially those with suede and leather trim. In addition, it should be taken into account that plain plastic 3D panels for wall cladding can be painted with acrylic paints yourself.

6

The cheapest today are textured chipboard and fiberboard sheathing sheets. They are made, like ordinary ones, by pressing, the only difference is that special stamps are used to print the relief. Enamel or acrylic paint, as well as varnish, are usually applied as a final coating, but such a budget decor does not look very impressive. Installation of such panels is carried out on a regular crate made of timber.

Embossed wall materials from chipboard with 3D pattern

More expensive - 3D MDF panels, they lie better on the wall and look more beautiful, and they can simply be put on glue with fairly even surfaces. The structure of such panels is less fibrous, and, accordingly, the texture prints are clearer and more pronounced. This makes it possible to embody in more complex three-dimensional patterns. The dimensions of this type of panels can vary from 1 square meter to several squares.

7

If you want to create an unusual decor in the rooms, but finances do not allow you to purchase aluminum or even plastic 3D wall panels, there is a cheaper and at the same time quite effective option. It is possible to sheathe surfaces in the room with gypsum relief panels. The only thing to consider is that this material is quite heavy, so a strong crate is needed, and installation is carried out only with screws, flush, and the fasteners must be screwed in very carefully so that cracks do not form.

Wall cladding with gypsum embossed panels

The convenience of gypsum panels lies in the possibility of staining them with almost any paint. Lacquering or even waxing can be applied as a final finish, which will create a unique effect of transparency of the coating. In addition, the panels themselves can be completely made independently, having suitable molds for casting from gypsum mortar. Silicone templates are best suited for this purpose.
