Do-it-yourself foam rubber mattress is an interesting and exciting process. How to make a do-it-yourself mattress with foam rubber filler

It is quite difficult to imagine a bed without a mattress at all. Even in the conditions of a tourist trip sleeping bag provides at least some resilience. But if for a bedroom in an apartment they still try to choose an orthopedic product, then for an overnight stay in the country, for example, a mattress made by oneself is quite suitable.

The choice of fillers for such products is actually small: either cotton wool or some of its derivatives, or a foamed synthetic polymer. In the role of the latter, foam rubber most often acts - elastic polyurethane foam.

This material is widely used in the manufacture of orthopedic mattresses. With their own hands, children's mattresses are sewn from foam rubber in a stroller, and in a crib too. The reason is the excellent user qualities of the material.

  • Hypoallergenic - polyurethane foam does not cause allergies and is completely safe.
  • Hygroscopic - perfectly absorbs moisture and removes it from the body. For children's mattresses, this is one of the most important indicators.

  • Antibacterial - the material is recommended for use in hospitals precisely because of this property: it prevents the development of bacteria, the appearance of dust mites and other things.
  • Ventilation - due to the high porosity, polyurethane foam is breathable and removes accumulated moisture.
  • Orthopedic properties - polyurethane foam has excellent elasticity and provides proper support to the body.

How to sew a foam mattress

The material is produced in the form of sheets and rolls with different thicknesses, which greatly facilitates the work. For children's products, polyurethane foam 2-4 cm thick is used for the stroller, and 5-6 for the crib. For adults, the layer thickness should reach 13 cm, so the product is usually made multi-layered.

  1. A rectangle of the appropriate size is cut out of the foam rubber. Let's say for a stroller it is 75 * 35 * 2 cm.
  2. To sew a cover made of thick cotton fabric - coarse calico, satin, two rectangles are cut out, the width and length of which is equal to the sum of the width and length of the mattress and 2 cm of height and seam tolerance.
  3. The cover is built up on three sides, then put on a blank of polyurethane foam and the free edge is built up. It is advisable to stitch the cover and the base together - the material dries easily and quickly, so washing the product will not be difficult. To do this, use a zigzag stitch.

How to sew a cotton mattress

Cotton wool is a traditional filler, but by no means the best. The material has a high primary porosity, but it cannot keep it long enough, since cotton fibers do not have elasticity. Of course, you can make a mattress out of it, but not for a child. In this case, the naturalness of the material in no way atones for the shortcomings.

The procedure will take much longer: sewing a mattress pad is quite simple, but stuffing it with filler is not an easy task.

  1. The dimensions of the future product are determined, two segments are cut out of dense cotton fabric with a tolerance for the side seams and stitched. One end of the product is left open.
  2. Then, cotton wool is laid on the floor in thin layers and each fragment is gently pressed, checking the uniformity. Then the next layer is laid on the first layer in the same way until the filler reaches the required thickness.
  3. The resulting workpiece is recommended to be sewn with very loose wide stitches. But if thin layers really fit, then the material will be held on its own.
  4. The cover is turned inside out and picked up. Cotton wool is rolled up in a free roll.
  5. The end of the roll is applied to the sewn end of the cover, the corners of the workpiece are put into the corners of the mattress cover, and then the cover is carefully put on the roll, while rolling it out. It is better to do the procedure with two people, and not with your own hands.
  6. The free end of the mattress cover is sewn up. You can stitch the cover and cotton wool on sewing machine, if it involves working with a material of this thickness, but, as a rule, the product is quilted by hand.

The video explains in detail how to sew yourself.

Production of an orthopedic mattress

IN this case it would be more correct to say, not to sew, but to glue. The cost of this option will be higher than that of polyurethane foam products, but significantly lower than that of finished models.

In a specialized store, you can find sheets of coconut coir, synthetic latex, and, of course, polyurethane foam. The material is combined depending on the required degree of rigidity. You will also need special glue - about 0.5 liters.

  1. A rectangle of the required size is cut out of each canvas, in total the height can reach 21 cm.
  2. The segments are treated with glue and alternately stacked on top of each other.
  3. A cover is made: two rectangles are cut out according to the size of the product and four sides for the sidewalls. The cover is cut off.
  4. The material here is better to choose a more durable and durable, for example, blended jacquard cotton fabrics. It is preferable to sew a removable cover by integrating a zipper into the long side seam.
  5. The product can be sheathed with braid and skip the cord: it will ensure the preservation of the shape.

The cover is put on the finished product. You can see a sample in the photo.

Comfort during sleep is important for a person. And in any case, you sleep on the bed or on the sofa - you can not do without a mattress. Mattresses are different: orthopedic, wadded, latex, foam rubber, synthetic fluff, and so on. So that the mattress does not get dirty, lasts longer, and pleases the eye - the question arises: how to sew a mattress cover with your own hands. You can, of course, do time-consuming sewing, but I want to sew a mattress pad quickly and easily.

How to sew a mattress cover for a baby stroller or crib - very easy! The filler for the mattress can be made of foam rubber, batting, synthetic fluff. Quilted batting works great (can be found in the "fabric" store). Our master class will tell you how to make a cover for a mattress filled with foam rubber.

Standard dimensions for a mattress in a stroller are 80/40 cm. For a mattress in a baby bed - 140/70 cm.

I would like to say a little about the fabric from which we will sew a mattress cover with our own hands. The fabric should be pre-soaked in warm water 40 gr., and iron with an iron. This applies to all natural fabrics. Otherwise, after the first wash, the cover may “sit down” and not fit on the filler.

For work you will need:

  1. A piece of foam rubber 80 cm long and 40 cm wide.
  2. Cover fabric.
  3. Lightning in the color of the fabric, length - 18-20 cm.
  4. Sewing machine (for lack of - you can sew by hand, with a “needle forward” seam).
  5. Scissors, ruler, pencil, drawing paper.

Take a sheet of paper and draw a drawing finished product. We will get 2 rectangles on a piece of paper. The first rectangle is the size of your product (80/40 cm). Set aside narrow strips from it on the sides with a length equal to the length (80 cm) and a width equal to the thickness of the foam rubber + 2 cm for allowances. The second rectangle is a 80/40 cm rectangle + 2 cm on each side.

First we sew the zipper. To do this, add 2 of our parts face to face, and scribble small areas in places marked with a bold line on one side and on the other (see photo).

We leave a hole, in length, equal to the lightning. In this place we will sew a zipper in the future. Sew 2 parts of the mattress along bold lines.

We apply a lightning to the middle. We check how much space we left for the lightning.

We pin the zipper with pins, and sew the zipper. The zipper should be sewn on the wrong side. We remove the pins.

Next, sew together narrow strips of fabric, which were set aside from the very beginning in the drawing, in the first drawing - in the corners. Then we stitch 2 main details on the three remaining sides. We turn out the mattress cover, put it on the foam rubber.

Decorate the corners with pom-poms.

So the do-it-yourself mattress pad is ready, sewn for a baby stroller.

The next version of the cover is a cover with an elastic band. Suitable for both cotton and orthopedic mattresses. A simple pattern, and the mattress cover will be sewn quickly, in one evening. In order to sew a mattress cover with an elastic band, it is better to take a dense, non-fading fabric, a new thick sheet will do. It is better to buy a sheet in Euro-size, usually it is 240/280 or 240/220 cm. Before buying, measure your mattress, and figure out what size sheet will fit, given the hem at the bottom.

For work you will need:

  1. Cover fabric (any fabric will work) dense fabric).
  2. Rubber band or elastic band.
  3. Safety pin for threading elastic.
  4. Sewing machine.
  5. Centimeter, ruler, pencil.

In order to draw our future cover on a piece of paper, you need to measure the length (a) of the mattress, the width (b), and the height of the side (h). We draw a pattern on a sheet of paper.

We draw our drawing. The fold line means our piece of fabric is folded in half. Set aside ½ the width of the mattress from the fold. Dimension b is the length of the mattress. We have a rectangle ½ ab. Around this rectangle we lay aside to the left, to the right, and from below we lay aside h + 15 cm for the hem.

We continue the lines with a stroke, we get shaded squares. We cut it out with scissors, leaving a seam allowance of 1 cm. This is the final version of our scheme, according to which we will cut the cover.

Fold the fabric in half along the entire length. We transfer with a pencil and a ruler all our sizes to the fabric. Carefully cut out according to the intended pattern. Next, put together the front sides, and grind the segments c and c1 from one side and the other. We will have 4 corners. We process the edge of the seam cut so that the fabric does not spill out. Next, we need to process the bottom cut of the product. We tuck the edge 2 times, and sew the hem. The width of the hem should be such that it is convenient to insert an elastic band there.

We retreat from the corner of 50 cm, and with a safety pin we thread an elastic band, or an elastic band. We fix the ends of the elastic with stitches. We get the assembly only in the corners, in other places of the cover - just a hem seam.

It turns out that you can even make a mattress with your own hands from the same pillows. To do this, we put an even number of pillows into a bag, divided by seams into parts, and we get children's mattress on which you can roll and play. Velcro is sewn to the edges of the mattress so that it is convenient to keep it folded.

Interesting modular pillows are simple identical pillows with zippers on the sides. To sew such a mattress, you will need pillows, pillowcases, and zippers of the same size and color. For example, if there are 6 pillows, then 12 zippers will be needed.

This is a four pillow mattress.

If the mattress has become unusable, and for some reason you do not want to buy a new one, there is nothing else left but to make a mattress with your own hands. At the same time, you can significantly save money, since you will have to spend money only on the purchase of materials for the filler and the cover.

Is it worth it to make an orthopedic mattress yourself

Today, the market for sleep products is represented by a huge number of manufacturers offering all kinds of orthopedic models, options with memory effect, children's models, spring and springless. Among this variety, you can choose the most suitable for both quality and price.

However, even taking into account all kinds of promotions and discounts, the price of the simplest orthopedic mattress in the store is higher than the cost of the materials that serve as filling. If you're willing to take your time and make orthopedic mattress Do-it-yourself, you will be able to save a lot. In addition, the advantages of such a product will be:

  • Natural materials (you will know exactly what is included in the filler and what kind of glue was used in the manufacture);
  • Removable cover made of pleasant fabric that can be washed or replaced (not all mattresses have a removable cover, creating a product yourself, you can provide everything you need for ease of use and care);
  • The ability to choose any combination of fillers depending on your preferences for softness, you can also make an orthopedic mattress double-sided with a soft and hard side, such models in stores are usually expensive.

What materials are needed to make

If you still don’t know how to make a mattress with your own hands, decide what type of filler you need and what the product will be used for: for a bed with a slatted bottom, or a lightweight version of synthetic winterizer for a folding bed, a foam mattress instead of an old one that has sagged and lost its shape.

For manufacturing you will need:

  • Sewing machine;
  • Fabric from which the cover can be made (cotton or jacquard);
  • Sharp scissors for cutting filler materials;
  • Roulette;
  • Special adhesive for gluing filler materials;
  • Filler.

If you want to make a foam rubber mattress with your own hands, this is perhaps the most economical and easiest option, since foam rubber is easy to buy at any construction market or at a repair supply store. It is important to pay attention to such an indicator as the density of the foam rubber for the mattress.

As a rule, foam rubber has a density of 25 to 40 kg/cu.m. The density indicator is indicated by numbers in the marking, and stiffness is also indicated here, which directly depends on the density. There are standard low-cost grades of SL foam rubber, with a higher density of EL foam, which can withstand weights up to 100 kg, and elite brands of HR and VE, which refer to latex foam rubber, or artificial latex. The choice depends on your weight and budget.

Foam rubber is used in the production of most models of leading brands, however, in the description of the filler, the material is called polyurethane foam (PPU), in fact it is the same thing. By itself, a foam mattress does not carry orthopedic properties, therefore, in addition to PPU, spring blocks or a layer of coconut coir are used in the filler. The foam mattress has a low price, the material quickly restores its shape, moisture and vapor impermeable, lightweight, easy to use and care for.

In addition to foam rubber, latex is also used as a filler.

Latex is a natural material, it provides ventilation and creates conditions for perfect comfort, softness on the one hand, and full support on the other.
Its separate sections are independent, which is very suitable for double beds. However, the cost of the material is much higher than the price of foam rubber.

To make an orthopedic mattress with your own hands, spring blocks, coconut coir, synthetic winterizer, natural latex, felt, which is used as a layer separating the spring block and foam rubber, can be purchased at specialized stores offering furniture upholstery materials.

Instructions: how to make a mattress yourself

Making a product with your own hands involves several stages of work:

  • It is necessary to measure the old mattress and determine the parameters of the product, purchase materials for the filler and the fabric from which the cover will be sewn, right size and cut off the excess with sharp scissors;
  • If you are making a removable orthopedic mattress, which in daytime will be stored in a closet, it is better to make a model divided into several parts, a folding version. To do this, the foam rubber is cut into 2-3 parts across;
  • To sew the cover, cut out the two main parts and the side according to the width of the mattress, leaving allowances for stitching the parts. A cotton cover is best made with a zipper or buttons with an overlap. The width of the cover depends on the number of layers and the sum of their widths;
  • If you are making a thin removable version of synthetic winterizer, you first need to sew a cover like a duvet cover, and insert the filler instead. The product can be made quilted;
  • If your future product consists of several layers, you need to assemble this “pie” by gluing the layers with special furniture glue, you must choose an environmentally friendly and safe glue;
  • Using the Bonnel spring layer, it is necessary to make layers of felt on each side, then use a layer of foam rubber on top and bottom, you can choose PPU with different stiffness for the top and bottom layers to make a double-sided option. It is better to supplement one of the sides with a layer of synthetic winterizer.

In this world, unfortunately, there is nothing eternal. The same applies to mattresses, which over time begin to lose their original characteristics. They bend or bulge in some places. Sleeping on such mattresses is no longer very comfortable. So you decide to buy a new one.

And what about those whose financial situation does not allow them to purchase another mattress? Or those who love original and unusual things? There is a way out - to make a mattress with your own hands.

It is clear that you will not be able to build an orthopedic mattress on your own. But still, you will definitely succeed in reconstructing the old one, making it more convenient.

Before embarking on this peculiar procedure, you need to prepare. First, highlight free time for work. Second, stock up necessary material. You will need:

  • padding - your choice;
  • strong threads
  • sewing machine.

In the event that you are going to reconstruct a stationary mattress, then plus everything you need to prepare:

  • wooden slats,
  • springs,
  • arm yourself with big nails,
  • hammer,
  • and, of course, a stapler.

First you need to decide on the stuffing, that is, what kind of material you want to use.

To do this, you need to know exactly how you will use your mattress in the future - whether it will be removable or stationary. As a rule, for removable models, soft stuffing (foam rubber, synthetic winterizer) is used, which will allow them to be easily folded during operation.

Step-by-step process of working with a removable mattress

So, spread the foam rubber on the work surface, and apply the markup you need. You can use two options: cut the foam rubber lengthwise into two parts or leave it as a whole piece, and also cut the foam rubber into 2-3 squares. Thus, it will be easier to fold it, pack it and put it in a secluded place if you intend not to use it constantly.

This option is very convenient as a spare, for example, for guests. For the foam cutting procedure, it is better for you to use the help of a friend who will help you stretch the material, and at that time you can carefully cut it along the markings.

So, the foam rubber is ready, it remains to correctly cut out the blank for the cover. Remember that you need to leave allowances for the seams, as well as for the thickness of the padding itself. Do correct measurement foam blanks and allow a few centimeters on each side.

A good alternative is a removable cover, which can be easily removed for washing during use. To do this, along the length of the pattern, it is still necessary to leave 20 cm, which in the future will play the role of an overlap. Velcro tape or a zipper can be sewn to the place of overlap - at your discretion.

Let's start stitching the cover. The process must begin with cross sections. After that, sew the cover along the length, while laying the corners in the middle. Expand it with the seams in the middle and put it on the prepared foam rubber. If yours is not removable, sew the raw edge with a sewing machine or by hand.

If you prefer soft stuffing or synthetic winterizer, then first you need to sew a cover.

In this case, you need to carefully measure the size of the bed and add the thickness of the future mattress to this. Make a pattern according to your measurements, leaving allowances for the seams. Sew the seams on the sewing machine and the cover is ready.

fill it up upholstered given that it will soon begin to nail and become thinner. So that it does not clump into lumps, it is recommended to flash the mattress with a strong thread in several places, attaching dense pieces of fabric to both sides. Such mattresses are softer, while the service life is much shorter than their counterparts made of foam rubber.

How to reconstruct a stationary mattress with your own hands?

Now let's look at creating with my own hands fixed mattress with springs. Suppose your old mattress has worn out. Here and there, the springs bulge out, the cover has already taken on an untidy look, and you decided on a radical change - to reconstruct the mattress.

Here you can do two methods - tighten the old springs with strong twine, replace some of them, change the packing and, if possible, the cover. But you can radically reconstruct your mattress, and in the end, get a completely new product - one that you made yourself. These things are the most valuable!

To do this, prepare blocks of springs, the number of which must correspond required size. Arrange them in vertical position. Pay attention to the fact that the outer level of the springs is even. You need to fix their lower part on 2-centimeter slats, which are no more than 7 cm in width and thickness. Prepare nails and drive them in from the end side of your sleeping area at the level of all spring rows. Start tying the springs.

First of all, the transverse row. Then along the row and finally diagonally. Check the upper level of the springs again - it should be even! At this stage, lay the material prepared in advance on top. Almost any heavy fabric will do. Lay the stuffing, for example, synthetic winterizer. And, the last layer is upholstery. It is better to fix it with a furniture stapler.

The mattress is ready!

That's all - your homemade mattress is ready! The best part is that you were able to do it yourself, spending a little time on the process, while saving a lot from a financial point of view. In addition, you sewed a mattress cover from a fabric that you and your family like in colors.

You no longer need to run around the shops in search of the colors you need - this also has its advantages. And, do not despair if on the first try you did not manage to do everything the way you would like it to be. In any case, practice is needed, and you have already passed the first stage. Now you can offer your help in the reconstruction of mattresses with your own hands to your relatives, friends and acquaintances. Have a nice holiday.

what you dream about: a mattress made of natural fabric, with natural filler, and, apparently, with a cover for easy washing. not spring, not "orthopedic", but the most ordinary - a la old Soviet striped - to sleep on the floor. only I need a suitable size and, of course, a little thicker.

what does not suit "yes, right now, there is such a choice everywhere!":
1. "I don't believe" synthetics and all these fashionable fillers such as "very breathable" regular foam-poly-ultra-propyline-cellophane, coconut flakes and other heresy.
2. the mattress should be of the "original" size: with a height of 185, according to preliminary estimates, the length of the mattress should be at least 220-240 cm, so that you can sleep comfortably on your stomach, and the pillow does not fall off. in the same hardened "ikea" floor mattresses - 200 cm maximum. this is only suitable for not very tall girls 160-170cm tall. Well, again, I don’t need a monster like 240x240 either - I sleep on it, and not play football.

in total, what appears to me at the stage of preliminary investigation:
a rag suitable, I think, is not so difficult to find. it is obvious that you still need 100% cotton of decent density (and it is possible that you also need ... how to call it - like a "pillow" or ... so that the fibers from cotton wool do not climb through cotton, in short). - sew? and what is there especially to sew - top, bottom - two rectangles with slightly rounded edges. and plus "sides". well, obviously, it would not be superfluous to put a thin, authentic zipper into the "board" (by the way, where can I buy a really long, rather thin one and so that good quality- did not fall apart right there?) - so that there is an opportunity to access the filler just in case of a fire. well, a "cover" is also needed, which will be on top - so that it can be periodically removed and in washing machine wash. the cover can also be with a zipper, or you can, probably, with buttons ...

filler here I am not particularly in the subject yet; well, apparently, all the same cotton wool - cotton, or cotton with ... wool? in theory, there should be somewhere offices that sell such nonsense (by weight?).

Well main question : how to fill, so that it looks like the truth ??? complexities and subtleties are quite possible here, but, I still believe that this can also be done ... well, plus, again, such end-to-end "firmware" that have been used all my life on commemorative mattresses from the times of the USSR - so that it's all there better "stood" and did not particularly stray from the center to the edges.

So here are the pies. who has, perhaps, experience, or any helpful tips, considerations, warnings, etc.? well, in principle, you can even express doubts, like "yes, you know, a kind person, what's the deal with this cotton wool, the stuffing process and everything else?!"...
