It can be very nice to bring some original technical idea to life. Making a velomobile with your own hands is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. Only some technical literacy is required.

Standard velomobile

The great advantage of personally working on a velomobile is that there are no difficulties with making changes - the design can be improved at your discretion. In addition, you can also add own ideas, even if they are purely decorative. As for practical innovations, they include the use of a motor. In this case, you can use a motorized wheel, which in the design replaces the conventional drive wheel.

The most common models are three-wheeled velomobiles with conventional tube wheels. As a rule, the drive wheel has a larger diameter. This approach is required in order to provide the vehicle with greater maneuverability and speed. The mass of conventional velomobiles built according to standard design, is about 16-18 kilograms. Each design change affects the mass of the vehicle.

The network has a lot of videos on how to make a velomobile with your own hands. They demonstrate how such a unit develops speeds of up to 40 kilometers per hour. Due to some additions, it is possible to provide an efficient multi-speed gearbox, as well as provide the ability to drive not only on roads, but also on light off-road. When driving at high speeds, the brakes play an important role. The most common installation is double disc brakes, due to which, if necessary, stop vehicle can be done fairly quickly. It should be noted that the drawings that allow you to assemble a velomobile with your own hands never contain information on changing the standard brake design, as this is unsafe.

Project Features

With due desire and perseverance, creating a three-wheeled or four-wheeled velomobile with your own hands is not so difficult. Self assembly- practically the only option to get such a vehicle, because there is nothing similar on sale. There are several types of such units: they can be walking, sports, hiking and multifunctional. In addition, if necessary, you can assemble a children's velomobile with your own hands. For children of elementary school and preschool age such a technique will be more interesting and safer than a conventional two-wheeled bicycle.

There are a number of limitations that are determined at the design stage. This applies to the mass of the future vehicle. As a rule, weight reduction leads to an increase in cost. Oddly enough, but it is the mass that turns out to be the main characteristic, on the basis of which it is decided which bike to make with your own hands. When the initial problems are solved, a drawing of the model is drawn up.

Next, a frame is created, seats are selected and sheathed, carriages are fastened. The most important part is organizing the wheel mounts. As a rule, cantilever mounts are used in velomobiles, since a conventional hub will not be reliable enough. After the wheels, shock absorbers are installed. When the main structural points are completed, you can proceed with the installation decorative elements, which do not have a large effect on the main part of the unit.

With the fact that the velomobile is good for health, I think no one will argue. Well, for lovers of technical creativity, it is doubly useful, as it allows you to gain invaluable experience before creating more serious designs. The velomobile in question was designed and manufactured in the workshop of the station young technicians(SUT) of our city, together with the guys from the circles. I must say that the idea of creating it came to me much earlier, and therefore I prepared the materials and most of the spare parts (in particular, wheels) myself, at my own expense. True, both the wheels and the materials were mostly picked up from abandoned bicycles, so the costs were not so great.

Velomobile - double, four-wheeled. The front wheels are steering, the rear wheels are driving. The crew has two pedal drives - each for its own wheel.

Velomobile frame - welded, two-spar scheme. However, both spars and the front cross member are made as one piece - curved from a pipe with an outer diameter of 40 mm - from the handrail of a decommissioned city bus. The ends of the spars are bent upwards and, together with the traverses welded to them, serve as supports for the seat backs.

A rear cross member is welded between the supports of the seat backs - it serves as the upper support of the suspension units (springs and hydraulic shock absorber) rear axle.

The front support of the seats themselves is a low portal, supported by its uprights on both spars and also connecting them. In its middle, a handbrake handle is mounted, and at the ends of the crossbar there are gearshift levers.

The rear axle is of a rather unusual design. Its basis is a closed subframe, welded from the arches of the backs of metal beds. On its sides, the axle shafts of the drive wheels with a three-speed block of drive sprockets are fixed in bearings.

The parking brake disc is mounted (welded) on the left axle shaft. The service brakes are caliper and act on the front wheels. The subframe is connected to the frame (to be more precise, to the portal) by means of a oscillating axle and two oblique levers made of an equal-shelf corner No. 2.5.

Front wheel suspension - independent on springs. The springs are placed in the bushings of the steering knuckle axles. The suspension travel is small, and it absorbs only small bumps in the road. Therefore, to mitigate the impact from larger irregularities, soft rubber bumpers (thick washers) are also installed on the axle on both sides of the bushings.

Rear wheel suspension - "semi-independent". The subframe is suspended on springs (from the Karpaty moped) with a hydraulic shock absorber from the Verkhovyna moped. The wheels of the car are different. The front ones are from the Kama bike, the rear ones are from the Ural bike. But both of them are redone: they have replaced the hub bushings with longer ones (twice as long).

It should be noted that the assembly of the wheel is not an easy task, and a jig was made to facilitate this operation. A circle with a diameter equal to the wheel rim was cut out of a sheet of plywood, and four uprights-stops with a height equal to the part of the bushing protruding beyond the rim were fixed along its circumference. Then a new (elongated) bushing was fixed with a bolt with a spacer in the center of the plywood circle and the wheel was equipped with spokes - first the spoke was inserted into the hole in the hub flange, and then its end was inserted into the hole in the rim and baited with a slight stretch. After installing all the spokes, the wheel was removed from the jig and the spokes were finally tightened with a check for the absence of the "eight" in the wheel.

The front wheels are swivel. The steering is homemade. It consists of a steering wheel, a tubular shaft and a steering mechanism. rack type with tie rod. The rail and the rod end are connected by a ball joint. The other end of the rod is connected to the steering knuckle lever of the right wheel, and another one goes from it to the left wheel - an interwheel steering rod. On the front wheels are mounted and caliper working (travel) brakes.

Velomobile drive - pedal. The driver and passenger each have their own, three-speed, independent. Three gear speeds are enough to move on any rough terrain. But it should be recognized that with an empty mass of a velomobile of 55 kg, one person, when moving uphill, pedals even on the very lower speed hard.

Pedal assemblies are cut as an assembly from old road bike frames and welded at a convenient distance from the seats to the spars. The three-speed rear axle sprocket blocks are homemade, and only the sprockets themselves are used from a touring bike. Homemade and tensioner-switch drive chain.

The crew seats are homemade. Their base, attached at four points to the frame elements, is made of 1.5 mm thick duralumin sheet. A lining is laid on the base - a foam rubber mat, which is covered with a cover made of bright nylon fabric.

IN long way I usually took a plastic cape with which I covered other necessary things packed in the trunk. The trunk was a mesh stretched between the spars and the beam of the front axle in the bow of the crew (not shown in the drawing, but clearly visible in the photograph).

I also note that to connect the various elements of the frame and suspensions into a single structure, I used a household welding machine, and most of the small details of rotation (axles, bushings, etc.) are machined on a small school lathe.

I confess that in addition to business trips, I used a velomobile for two seasons (during the warm season) to travel to work and back home. In addition, on weekends he made trips to nature on it with his wife or brother.

After two years of operation, the D-4 engine was installed on the velomobile, and specifically on its rear left wheel, and its other "life" as a "motor vehicle" began. It is this version of the velomobile converted into a motorcycle crew that is shown in the photo.

So diverse that for a certain amount a person can get almost everything he dreams of. The same rule also applies, which has recently been ready to surprise and delight not only adults, but also small children. In addition to the usual and slightly boring standard bicycles, sellers of newfangled technical devices are ready to offer, along with motorcycles, ultra-new velomobiles. Surely, more than a dozen people dream of such a useful and very expensive pleasure, but not everyone has the opportunity to purchase such a device. True, even if you don’t have the means to afford a new factory velomobile, but you really want to try such an interesting transport for entertainment and sports, you shouldn’t get upset prematurely and try to accumulate the necessary amount.

Velomobile is great way stand out from the crowd

It is enough to look in the pantry or in the attic for an old unnecessary bicycle, which will become the basis for a completely new unique device, which the owner will later be able to shine on the streets of the city. In the article below, we will consider a method that allows you to make a velomobile with your own hands, having previously adopted some consumables, tools, patience and good mood. All of the above will help the creator of the creation to design a unique, one-of-a-kind velomobile that does not require huge financial costs. It is worth noting that a velomobile can be made with your own hands not only from an old bicycle: if, for example, there is a completely new bicycle that no one wants to use for its intended purpose, then such an assembly can become the basis of a new vehicle.

The purpose of the velomobile

Many people think that they do not have sufficient knowledge and skills, and this may prevent the creation of not only an adult, but also a children's movable device. However, as practice shows, it is as easy to create a children's velomobile as an adult, especially if we take as a basis standard drawing such transport, not complicated by upgrades and improvements. Having created a velomobile with his own hands, the owner of this device will acquire a completely different unit, which has practically nothing to do with an ordinary bicycle.

First of all, it is worth noting the comfortable ride on a velomobile, since the classic seat can be replaced with a more comfortable one. easy chair. At the same time, the driver of the velomobile will be able to strain many muscles of the lower body without much difficulty. In other words, during a walk a person will receive not only moral pleasure, he will be able to pump his legs, hips and abs without any effort. allows you to activate other muscle groups, as a result of which a person will look beautiful.

An adult velomobile, which can be equipped with two or four seats, will please teenagers and adults who love speed. Therefore, in order not to suddenly encounter a number of unforeseen situations, you should create a velomobile with your own hands strictly according to the instructions, correctly installing the design details.

A velomobile can become an integral part of the walks of country residents who can ride long distances, enjoying the surrounding nature and enjoying the fresh air, not only in warm weather. summer evening but also on cooler spring and autumn days.

In fact, a velomobile gives great joy from riding, it has many advantages, therefore, if you are going to create such a device yourself, you need to start from personal habits, lifestyle and preferences.

Classic single-seat velomobile

There are many recreational and sports vehicles in the world, which differ from each other in structure and capabilities. Everyone can create with their own hands both a single-seat and a double-seat velomobile, which is why the material below will consider a way to create a standard transport in terms of appearance and functionality.

If the owner of an old or new bike wants to transform a boring unit into a faster and more modern single-seat device, he will need to create a three-wheeled structure, the first single wheel of which will be much larger and higher than the two rear wheels. At the same time, the nanotransport will have a steering part, a front frame and a seat. In addition to all of the above, various connecting elements will come in handy in the process.

To begin with, in order to gain some practice, you can try to translate the idea into a children's velomobile. Such an interesting and unusual unit can become not only useful tool movement, but also a great opportunity to spend more time on the street, without wasting your eyesight on gatherings at the computer. In addition, the finished transport can subsequently be distinguished from the general mass through creative and very unusual solutions. A children's velomobile can be beautifully and brightly decorated, equipped with an unusual constructive part, due to which the fruit of the efforts will become especially unique and interesting.

Therefore, if there is a desire to make a velomobile with your own hands, you should immediately get down to business. The first thing every master will need is a drawing of the future vehicle. On the Internet, you can find many drawings, among them there will surely be the only option that the creator of the velomobile will choose. If global network will not be able to solve such a question, it will be possible to try to independently draw a diagram of the future device, while it will be necessary to first take into account all the components so as not to forget about something important.

The drawing must implement all the blueprints so that in the process of transforming a simple bicycle into a modern velomobile, important structural details are not missed.

Step-by-step instructions for creating a unique velomobile

In order to create a velomobile with your own hands, you will need a drawing and a lot of Supplies. In addition, you will need to stock up on tools such as:

  • Bulgarian;
  • soldering iron;
  • various elements for fasteners (bolts, nuts);
  • hammer;
  • pliers.

The velomobile will require several pipes, which should have different diameters. At the same time, it is desirable to prepare in advance the material that will be useful for upholstery of the finished vehicle.

Stage one. Creating a steering part with a front wheel

Creating a velomobile with your own hands cannot be called a too simple and quickly implemented task. In addition to tools and materials, those who started such a transformation of a bicycle into a new device will need a lot of free time. Especially do not rush at the first stage, since the overall success of the structure will depend on a properly designed front end. Through this important part, the movement of the vehicle will be carried out, in addition, the safety and convenience of the driver and passengers will depend on it. So, to make a velomobile with your own hands, or rather to create a steering part with a front wheel, you need:

  • grinder to release the front wheel of the old bicycle, removing all unnecessary components;
  • carefully trim the frame V-shape;
  • cut the remaining piece of the frame in half with a grinder, as a result of which this part can be bent to the center of the device;
  • attach the wheel strictly in the middle of the structure;
  • connect the bent frame part to the steering neck.

Only after the adult or children's velomobile acquires steering control, the rest of the steps should be performed.

Stage two. Drawing up the main frame

It is at this step that pre-prepared pipes will be needed. different diameters, which can be separately found or purchased items, or can be cut off from the body of an old bicycle. It is quite simple to implement the idea of creating the main frame, for this you need to cut all the pipes into separate pieces of 10 cm.

The next step should be the connection of individual structural elements, for which you will regularly have to refer to the drawn up drawing. After everything is welded, a finished frame will appear in front of the owner, which will later become the basis for connecting the rest of the velomobile parts. In order for a do-it-yourself velomobile to keep its balance well and be safe, each element of the frame should be checked.

Stage three. Creating a front fork

After an adult or children's velomobile of a non-production start acquires common features, the steering part of the structure will need to be equipped with a front fork. To do this, it will be necessary to attach a special steel element to it by means of a soldering iron, which will become the main connecting part between the frame and the rest of the moving parts of the velomobile.

All pipes connected to the steering column must have connectors of a certain size (it is best to create holes with a small diameter drill). It is they who will help to assemble a structure that will not literally “fall apart” with every movement. All parts of the velomobile will fit snugly together. Such constituent elements should be located on both sides of the front wheel, due to which the control of the finished velomobile will become more coordinated and safer.

Stage four. Rear frame fixing

To make a velomobile with your own hands, you will need tools such as a grinder and a soldering iron. Of the materials, you will have to use pipes of the same diameter (about four elements) and a pair of pipes of a smaller diameter (smaller pipes should be a few centimeters narrower than the main ones). In addition to all this, fasteners will be needed.

In order for the created single or double velomobile to be created as correctly as possible, four pipes of the same diameter should be connected so that the structural elements of shorter length are soldered on both sides of the quadrangular frame strictly parallel to each other. Both sides must subsequently be equipped with a protruding fixture that has a connector in the middle of the device. It is these fasteners that will subsequently be connected to the rear wheels of a smaller diameter.

Stage five. Brake system

When assembling a velomobile with your own hands, you need to check all the components for integrity and perfect performance. The braking system of the device deserves special attention, since the possibility of a sudden stop of the vehicle will depend on it. Even a bicycle needs good brakes, and if we consider a velomobile, then this unit needs a braking system no less than a car or motorcycle.

When creating a single or double velomobile with your own hands, you need to equip the brake “horseshoe” with two aluminum plates (using a soldering iron), and both components must have several holes. The finished integral structure will subsequently need to be combined with the front frame and forks.

Stage six. A device that allows you to change gears

Even a children's velomobile, not to mention the version for adults, has several gears. As practice shows, skilled craftsmen make such multifunctional units with their own hands, which cannot even be compared with simple production devices. After the velomobile is in the hands of the assembling best option designs for speed gears, he will need to think about mounting it. To do this, it is best to use:

  • two aluminum plates of the same size (later they will be welded together, creating a single device);
  • several fasteners(bolts, nuts or holders).

The main task of the sixth stage is to equip earlier assembled structure a gearshift device that will be attached to the axial part of the fork base.

Stage seven. Proper chair placement

Naturally, no matter how presentable appearance no matter the vehicle had, with an uncomfortable position of the “seat”, the control unit will not be able to feel comfortable. In order for a do-it-yourself velomobile to have a good seat, you will need:

  • several metal plates in the shape of a square (the basis of the future chair);
  • fasteners (bolts, nuts);
  • tools (grinder and drills);
  • a piece of chipboard;
  • any dense fabric, which could become upholstery material (leather or material used for upholstery of car seats is useful).

When creating a children's velomobile, special attention should be paid to the seat of the child, so that he can comfortably sit on it and easily reach the steering wheel and brake lever. After carefully connecting all the metal blanks with a soldering iron, the future owner of the velomobile should get a fixture that fits the shape of the chair. All movable parts must be connected with bolts, which will allow the seat to be installed in a way that will be convenient for its driver. On top of the fixture, you need to place a sheet of chipboard, as a result, the entire surface of the structure should be covered with upholstery.

Stage eight. Checking the created vehicle

Most likely, to create a full-fledged velomobile with your own hands, even experienced master it will take more than one day of free time. After the planned project can be fully implemented, and the device drawn on paper becomes a real embodiment of metal, you need to check the unit in action.

First of all, a test drive of a unique velomobile should take place at the place of its manufacture: the person creating the structure is obliged to check all movable elements, to make sure that they are working. After that, you need to test the velomobile in practice. It is preferable to carry out such a check away from a busy highway so that suddenly opened malfunctions do not prevent the driver from stopping or provoke an awkward situation for other road users.

Creation of a cross-country velomobile

The above article discusses a way to create a classic velomobile for children and adults, although everyone can, if they have the opportunity and desire, create a more advanced transport that would have increased cross-country ability. To do similar unit, you must first decide on several important aspects, in particular with the purpose of the design, the number of speeds, the design of the unit.

If the owner plans to travel at decent speeds, then it will be necessary to equip the structure with wheels or tires with good rubber. It is this indicator that will help increase the throughput of transport at any time of the year. However, it is preferable to choose larger tires with a larger diameter.

Four wheels will give the vehicle greater stability and high cross-country ability, which can withstand not only one or two, but even four passengers.

Do not place the seat too low, it is better to set it a little higher than the usual level, which will ensure greater safety for the passenger and protect him from the effects of the road surface.

Conclusion

A self-made velomobile becomes a faithful and reliable vehicle, especially if the creator put his soul into it and clearly followed the instructions and drawings. A bright unique velomobile in any weather will be able to amuse children and adults, becoming a faithful companion during walks on fresh air giving vivid emotions.

Instruction

Start designing a velomobile by determining its type. Depending on the scope of application, velomobiles can be divided into sports, pleasure, hiking and multifunctional. Decide also whether yours will be a single or a two-seater, whether you are going to equip it with a cabin or a fairing.

The limitations of building a velomobile are determined by its weight and the cost that you can afford. The less weight, the more cost. We have to consider the weight characteristics as the main criterion when choosing the design of a velomobile.

Before creating drawings, make a choice in favor of one or another future velomobile. A single unit hardly makes sense. Calculations show that a velomobile with three or four wheels would be unnecessarily heavy. But if you still decide to stop at this one, choose a three-wheeled scheme (trike).

Modeling a velomobile, start with the basic components, such as a seat and a carriage with pedals. If you stopped on a seat, keep in mind that the surface of the body adjacent to such a seat can sweat a lot, and, regardless of the time of year.

Make the frame from a steel profile tube. For seat upholstery, use synthetic fabric. Insert a strong cord around the perimeter of the skin, leaving its ends free. When fitting the upholstery to the seat frame, tighten the ends of the cord so that the upholstery fits snugly around the seat. The seat must be firmly attached to the frame.

Carriage fastening is possible in several ways, it depends on design features velomobile. It is possible to mount the carriage on clamps, in which case it can be moved along the frame. It makes sense to do this if the seat does not have distance adjustment to the pedal mechanism.

The most important task when assembling a velomobile is fixing the wheels. Traditional hubs are designed for a fork, but you will need a cantilever mount, where the wheel is attached only on one side, like car wheels. The wheel mount must support the load on a flat road.

Shock absorbers are used to mitigate impacts when hitting bumps in the road. The wheel is hung on hinges, while the weight of the velomobile wheel through the spring. The simplest shock absorbers go equally well in both directions, so when pedaling, it can swing. This is possible when hitting resonance. Improved models have hydraulic backstop suppression.

Can't stay in one place for a long time and constantly requires new sensations, try to direct his energy in a useful direction! Give your child a velomobile!

A fidget can feel like an adult if he has his own vehicle, but not with two wheels, like a bicycle, but with four, like an electric car! The Europeans called this type of transport velomobiles, and the Dutch even called them “da-cars”.

A children's velomobile is a scaled-down car controlled by pedals. In other words, this vehicle is muscular drive, which combines economy, simplicity and environmental friendliness.

Inventing the Velomobile

We design a velomobile with our own hands

The idea to create a children's velomobile does not arise by chance, because velo- and electric vehicles sold today are not without drawbacks. In addition, their cost is sometimes so high and not justified that it is easier to create such a “toy” for a child with your own hands. A modern children's car must be collapsible, similar to a real car, and also comfortable not only during operation, but also during storage.

The children's velomobiles found on sale, as a rule, have a non-separable design. Most of them are an open frame, equipped with a movable adjustable seat, a complex drive. The design is non-separable, and the machine itself is not able to overcome even the smallest obstacles. Ultimately, a full repair of such a toy is very expensive.

When creating a velomobile with your own hands, you can get rid of all the shortcomings.

Let's invent a children's velomobile!

Manufacturing features:

Advantages of a homemade children's velomobile

The most important advantage is the ability to quickly assemble and dismantle (make sure by watching the video). To quickly dismantle the mini-car, it is enough just to disconnect the leash located on the steering mechanism from the top of the V-shaped frame, and then rotate it to an angle of exactly 45 degrees, push it out of the support located on the crossbar.

Thanks to the chosen distance between the wheels, even in the folded position, they will not interfere with each other. The “breaking” of the children's velomobile is carried out first around the vertical axis, and after that - around the horizontal one, with a slight downward shift.

During the assembly process of the machine, the two parts of the frame (front/rear) are connected in such a way that the pin fits perfectly into the rolling bearing. Next, you need to move the latch to the leash on the steering mechanism, turning the V-shaped frame from the pin, and then disconnect it from the frame.

Ultimately, the design is installed on wheels. Children's velomobile is ready! It boasts good cross-country ability, and the ability to freely overcome obstacles, the height of which is equal to half the wheel! Due to its high strength, it will not need repairs.

Its small dimensions in a dismantled state, as well as a small weight (about 12 kg) allow you to solve all the problems that are usually associated with transporting a car, as well as its long-term storage in a small-sized one.

You can also design a children's electric car with your own hands. Of course, the assembly process will be much more complicated and not easy to describe in words, but there are many videos on the net with step by step instructions electric vehicle assembly.

Like a velomobile, it is better to assemble an electric car for a child not from scratch, but to use the details of a finished children's car. It is important to have a steering wheel, wheels, as well as an attractive body. If you have the main parts, you can make an electric car with your own hands in a day!
