Retro style is the breath of the past. This direction collects all the brightest that was in the 50-70s. When decorating the interior in a retro style, they choose the most memorable fragments of the past century, bringing some zest to the design of their homes. Retro style is considered one of the most interesting, it is complex, diverse. To create it, you can embody any fantasy, there is an endless space for creativity. The most important thing, of course, is styling. This applies to the creation of any style, and with regard to retro style, it will not be so important which years exactly you want to refer to, the main thing is that everything is chosen with taste.

Features of retro style in the interior

Many people think that retro style is old and antique items, this is partly true, but not only. Any things from the past of our parents and their parents are great for creating a retro-style interior. This is what distinguishes this style, you can take old grandmother's furniture and transform it into a modern sophisticated piece of furniture. Put an old piano or a samovar, and you will already achieve the desired result, of course, the rest of the design and design should match.

Furniture in retro style

What should be the furniture in this style? It can be the most unpredictable, the most important emphasis is the form. The material is already of secondary importance, but the unusual shape is the strong point of the retro style. A very popular retro style sofa shape is the shape of a large flower bud, the human palm also served as a prototype for furniture in this direction. Very often you can find a sofa, shaped like a woman's painted lips. Although less extravagant forms are more often chosen, they are still quite unusual.

But if you are still not a fan of such extraordinary interior, but you like the retro style, you can just take old grandmother's or great-grandmother's furniture and. As mentioned above, this style is not so difficult to create, given that many still have old furniture and interior items, and they are gathering dust somewhere in summer cottages, sheds and attics. You can put an old sideboard, chest of drawers, sideboard, secretary, bedside table, armchairs, sofas, chairs, tables and cabinets and ennoble them and your interior can be considered truly authentic, natural retro. What is beautification old furniture- this is grinding, painting, varnishing, it can be processed with sandpaper, this will give the furniture a worn effect. Very often they use the application of special antique patterns, it can be done manually or using a stencil. Very important advice in the use of patterns and drawings: if you want to apply a pattern to any piece of furniture, then apply the same to all other interior items, the stylization of the pattern should be the same, then your furniture will look like one set. For example, you painted a chest of drawers, add the same pattern to the cabinet doors, drawers of nightstands, countertops or legs of a table or chairs. There are many options, the main thing is to think clearly.

Patterns can be intricate, intricate, but the simplest, most primitive ones suit the retro style very well: flowers, geometric shapes, simple ornaments, fruits and vegetables. Designers advise using even imitation of children's drawings for patterns - figures of men, toys, birds, flowers - this refers to the “sentimental” retro style. Good for retro design the following patterns: cage, large or small polka dots, stripes and any other simple abstractions.

The retro style of the 70s includes heavy bulky polished furniture, tables and coffee tables should be simple and even rough, chairs can have a club style. Wardrobes with a huge number of glass shelves and patterned doors, an old great-grandmother's dressing table, wide long sofas with bright decorative pillows, shiny chairs with chrome trim and backs upholstered in faux bright leather.

Of course, if you do not have old furniture, then you can turn to the technique of artificially aging new furniture, giving it a shabby and shabby look to create the desired interior atmosphere. You can perform deliberately uneven coloring, and create a peeling effect.

Retro style color scheme

What else distinguishes the retro style is the cheerful and bright colors and shades that fill your home or apartment with joy and liven up the environment. Acid colors are characteristic, they were widely used in interior design of the past century. Suitable colors such as: red, hot pink, juicy green, blue, black, orange, white. Of course, you can choose any other color of your choice, the main thing is that it be saturated, you should not resort to blurry shades. Very popular in modern design retro style mustard shades, olive, cream, purple and avocado color. You can also use incompatibility in the color scheme, the main thing is not to mix them. A tandem of orange and blue flowers, green and pink and so on.

Ceiling and floor in retro style

Just whiten, paint with any light paint or cover as rough as possible - this is very typical for retro style. When choosing wallpaper, you should also stick to options that have simple and primitive patterns - small flowers, vegetables or fruits, geometric patterns and much more that was used in design in the years of the past century.

For perfect coverage, natural wood, can be painted with a single color paint. A checkerboard square floor will look very good, many residents of those years were very fond of using such a pattern. Also suitable is a “shaggy” carpet, a bright carpet.

Retro style accessories and decor

No interior is complete without accessories and decor items. For retro style, exactly those that were fashionable at that time are suitable. These can be: crystal vases, colored glass decanters, photographs in wooden frames, of the past era, old sets. A very refined attribute of antiquity is an old telephone with a disk.

You can also hang old posters that were once fashionable on the walls.

Antique floor lamps, lamps with lampshades, tassels, fringe, and chandeliers with cord are considered very important retro style accessories.

Retro style is a wonderful, unusual and fun style, designed to combine incongruous. Such an interior will always fill you with joy and good mood.

The word "retro" is used to refer to any things that were relevant in the past, but do not fit into the realities of the present. There is another concept - vintage. IN colloquial speech they are often confused, although they are similar but not identical. Retro (from Latin "back") is considered an abstract designation of old things and those items that have been artificially aged. There are no time limits for the direction. The age of such little things can be both 30 and 60 years old. The word vintage denotes only authentic, iconic items (usually in the fashion world), which have become a real symbol of an entire era. Their age, as a rule, does not exceed 25-30 years. For example, plastic earrings and acid-colored leggings are vintage items from the 80s. The retro direction includes vintage, as a component of the current, subject to fashion. Iconic things cannot organically fit into modernity if they have not become popular again. Retro style is out of fashion, the true value of old parts is precisely at their age. Antique plays special role in this direction - it has become one of the basic elements. Retro style in the interior, as well as in fashion, will appeal to true connoisseurs of beauty. In the article we will talk about how to decorate a house in an original way with your own hands and at the same time convey the unique spirit of the chosen era.

Features and characteristics of style

Although antique furniture and decorative details were used in different eras, the beginning of the 50s is considered to be the official “date” of the birth of retro. It was during this post-war period that tremendous changes took place in design. In parallel with the recovery of the economy, the designers sought to get rid of dullness and routine, to find new ideas and solutions so that the interiors would cheer up people and encourage them to be active. From the 50s, the countdown of epochs begins (usually 10 years each), which appear in the history of retro style as separate milestones. The post-war years are always taken as the zero coordinate. There are general character traits, which are peculiar only to retro:

  • Antique furniture. It can be not only an expensive auction lot, but also an old grandmother's set for the living room or a sideboard for the kitchen. And the safety of the furniture does not matter. If the closet is polished and looks like new, this does not mean at all that it is not suitable for decorating an apartment and there is no need to purposefully age it. The main thing is that the furniture reflects the features of the atmosphere of the era. In any case, it has its own special "history". The task of the designer is to make the furniture "speak" to maintain the atmosphere of retro romance.
  • Use of imitations in materials. The 1950s were a turning point when new, inexpensive materials, replacing durable wood, stone or brick.
  • Intense colors in detail. Perhaps this was the first wake-up call for classical style, as its dominant brown and pastel colors faded into the background when bright colors burst into the interiors with a fresh breeze.

Each era is characterized by special elements, tones, textures, but we'll talk about this later.

The colors of the past

Since the retro style does not depend on fashion, but on the time, there are no common color standards for it. For example, these days, such “delicious” colors as mustard, mint, olive, peach are popular. In the 50s, bright shades were in demand: turquoise, red, green, yellow. Monochromatic fabrics were not used in those days. For this era, combinations with floral ornaments, peas, flowers and a “village” cage are relevant. The background was chosen calm tones: white, shades of brown, pastel colors. Restraint and conciseness in the palette did not give up "without a fight." In the 1960s, background tones became calmer, more muted, but bright prints appeared, which are characteristic of “flower children”. By the 1970s, the palette changed once again, favoring gold and shades of brown, against which red, yellow, purple, green, blue geometric patterns looked advantageous.

Retro style furniture

Furniture is the main aspect in retrospect. It must correspond to the chosen era, so the choice is approached very responsibly. Even the right furniture placed in a room with the usual decoration for our time, it will displace the spirit of modernity due to its dominant color. Professionals advise, in addition to traditional elements, to use unusual details that will become a “highlight”. For example, an armchair in the shape of a blossoming flower bud, original chair backs, carved cabinet fronts or a dressing table with an oval mirror. Suitable furniture easy to get at flea markets that sell antiques. Find a dresser or bedside table maybe in grandma's attic. Ennoble them with varnish, paint, sandpaper, with the help of which characteristic scuffs "from time to time" are subsequently added. Decoupage technique has become popular in our time, when drawings are transferred to the surfaces of cabinets, bedside tables, sideboards. Drawings can also be added using stencils, which are sold in specialized stores. For the interiors of the 50s, massive, angular furniture is chosen. For the era of the 60s, rational decisions that take less space, but still not distinguished by increased comfort. To create the aesthetics of the 70s, compact, functional, cozy furniture of original forms is used.

For furniture from any retro era, the legs have an elegant shape and are made of either wood or metal.

Materials and methods of finishing rooms

For finishing the surfaces of the room choose simple materials. In this regard, the retro style is unpretentious and does without whims, as, for example, a modern eco trend. The decoration is dominated by wood. If we are talking about later retro, they use plastic, which at that time was at the top of popularity due to its cheapness and availability.

Walls and ceiling

The ceiling is plastered or sheathed with boards. The surface of the wood is sanded and painted in the desired tone. In small rooms it is not recommended to experiment with bright prints and juicy shades since they land the ceiling. For wall decoration, fabric wallpapers are used. The pattern on their surface can be very different: from a simple floral ornament to complex ornate patterns. The second option would be painting the walls. In this case, combinations of up to five colors are possible. They can be both bright and muted. In modern interiors, stylized as retro, they often use brickwork. This typically loft element does not correspond to the era, but paradoxically organically merges into the atmosphere of the 50s.

Floor

TO fabric wallpaper Suitable laminate light shades. If the walls are painted, then it is better to use a parquet board or linoleum with a "chess" pattern. A modern self-leveling floor is suitable only for the style of the extravagant 80s. The kitchen uses durable tiles. Mandatory element on the floor is considered a round carpet with a short pile. Its color is chosen in such a way that it is in harmony with the walls and furniture.

Accessories and decor

Decor, as you know, polishes the room. The retro style used an abundance of decorations that enlivened the environment and made it more fun. In any room there should be colorful curtains made of light fabrics. Also, the interior is necessarily decorated with many family photos and an abundance of books. It is advisable to use the latter not only for decoration, but also in order to enrich your knowledge. In textiles, chintz and cotton prevail. Tables are covered with tablecloths in stripes, cages or naughty polka dots. The original design move will be decorating the walls with signs and posters with images of "pin-up" girls. The kitchen uses bright utensils. He does not shun retro and vases, caskets, mirrors, floor lamps with unusual shades. Among the materials for decor, cast iron and wood are in the lead.

Retro from different decades

For three decades (from the 50s to the 70s), the style has undergone changes in which one can find a reflection of changes in the lifestyle of the average person and his tastes. It all started with strict environments, where echoes of the classical style could be traced. Gradually, the interiors changed beyond recognition and displayed a chaotic time in anticipation of the "fashionable" revolution of the 80s, which subsequently led to modern styles. The retro era has become an intermediate option, a design "buffer zone" between directions that are radically different from each other. It was thanks to her that this transition between contrasts became soft, without elements of shock therapy.

1950s

At this time, there was a breakthrough in industry and the automotive industry. The legislators of interior fashion at that time were European countries and USA. This "boom" was due to unusual design household appliances: cookers, refrigerators, ovens, radios. They have an abundance of handles, levers, sensors and buttons, which made them look like dashboard car. The furniture was made from simple materials: tree, metal pipes, various iron "waste". This traced the post-war deficit and rationality, as a way out. Monochromatic textiles were used in furniture upholstery, and decor was decorated with ornaments. Even retro-style heating radiators had an original surface with embossed patterns. Also in the interior composition there was an abundance of chrome elements, and instead of expensive leather, a high-quality substitute was used, again in order to save money. By the way, the furniture (especially chairs) was harsh, but practical.

A special element for karaoke lovers will be the arrangement of a corner for singing in the living room. The main item in this zone will be a microphone on a stand, like the American star - Elvis Presley. It symbolizes a whole era, a musical breakthrough. By the way, these microphones have a special cardioid diagram, which allows you to work in rooms with poor acoustics.

1960s

The aesthetics of the 60s does not yet have the "challenge" of future decades. The interiors used the same tones as in the 50s, but in more subdued versions. To stylize the apartment, posters and prints symbolizing the movement for peace (hippies) were used. "Flower children", as they were then called, gained wild popularity in the United States, then the current swept over the British youth. The younger generation scooped new ideas from school, which was the reason for a real revolution in the world of design. Children were brought up on completely different ideals than their parents in the post-war years. At the end of the 60s, the most grandiose festival of those times took place - Woodstock, which could only be outdone in terms of mass character by "Monsters of Rock" in 1991 in Moscow's Tushino. The massive popularization of the new lifestyle has had a huge impact on interior design. Freedom and brightness gradually won back their positions, displacing rationalism and laconism. IN electrical appliances(lamps, kettles, TVs) there is a use of smooth shapes and rounded corners. But the furniture remains almost unchanged. Only its upholstery is gradually decorated with asymmetrical ornaments.

1970s

Relaxed interiors are gradually being equipped with luxury and comfort items: sideboards, bar counters, coffee tables appear. Surfaces are decorated with an intricate ornament based on combinations of soothing tones: natural shades and gold, brown, walnut colors. Chairs become "softer" for greater comfort for guests and household members. In many interiors, the outlines of the emerging minimalism are observed. Sharp corners are completely abandoned in favor of soft roundness. Forms become more complex, more futuristic. The disco era dictates its own rules regarding lighting and color palette. In the setting, a couple of accent, bright tones are necessarily used. Geometric patterns (circles, squares, triangles) come into fashion. Houses are decorated with garlands, neon lamps, devices of complex shapes.

An ottoman will become a stylish element in the living room. Visually, it looks like a couch without armrests and a back. A wide seat will allow you to accommodate twice as many guests as on a regular ottoman or sofa.

Consider a variant of a retro kitchen from an intermediate era at the junction of the 60s and 70s. Floor trim ceramic tiles black and white flowers.
