Today, many people work remotely. Some of them do not have a separate place to work, therefore, great option is to separate the space for work in the living room. All it takes is a few practical shelves and a table with drawer for storing books, albums and other accessories. With functional furniture and stylish additions, a work space can become stylish decoration even a small rectangular living room.
Decor and accessories
A lot of decorations will make a narrow rectangular living room visually even longer and can cause a feeling of congestion. You need to limit any additions and keep them to a minimum. What can be done?
- you can hang pictures or images of large sizes above the sofa that attract the attention of visitors;
- additions and accessories made from natural fabrics such as linen or cotton complete the entire interior in a subtle and elegant way; thus, the interior will acquire a unique character, while remaining airy and open;
- white or light furniture, a light floor and a cream carpet will optically expand and decorate the room;
- other furniture (cabinets, coffee tables) must have a square or round shape;
- it is better that the carpet has a uniform color, but if you do not like the monotony and would like to lay a carpet with patterns, it is better to choose the striped option; other kind of pattern is not recommended.
In terms of artistic design, we must keep the principle of minimalism. Decorations should look elegant. You can bet on or Wall panels with brick imitation, stylish, soft knitted ottoman.

An interior with disproportionate dimensions is difficult to organize. In the case of a rectangular living room of 20 square meters, we must correctly divide the space and carefully select elements that can positively affect its appearance, as well as optically enlarge it.
In this project, some techniques were applied that visually changed the proportions of the interior. Let's consider them in more detail.
Option 1. Design of a rectangular living room 20 sq m, photo
In this version, a seating area with a sofa and a TV set on a low pedestal is placed by the window. It is light and cozy, there is nothing superfluous. And in the part farthest from the window there is a working area with a closet.
The two zones are separated by a door and a transparent bookcase that lets in light and does not clutter up the space, only delicately zoning it.
Option 2. Rectangular living room design, photo
Here, recreation and work areas were swapped, placing working area by the window, there is a large wardrobe up to the ceiling with mirrored doors. Lounge area with large corner sofa located on the opposite side. Wallpapers with horizontal stripes also visually changed the proportions of the interior. Also, the striped wallpaper finds its way into the mirrored closet doors – making this small wall look even bigger and appear much wider than its actual size.
Carpet with zigzag stripes located on opposite side rooms in relation to the wallpaper, visually expands the other half of the room.
The closet played here special role, changing the view of the room in two directions:
- optically raised the distance from the floor to the ceiling, so we do not have the impression of a low ceiling;
- mirrors on the cabinet doors increased the space, unfortunately, only visually.
White furniture harmonizes beautifully with gray walls. simple shapes and geometric patterns perfectly capture the atmosphere of Scandinavian design.
