How to repair cracks in the ceiling. How to repair a cracked ceiling without unpleasant consequences How to repair a chipped ceiling

Exist different variants ceiling finishes. Many of them well hide minor defects in the base and cracks that appear over time. But the main problem of painted and whitewashed ceilings is still cracks. different sizes. Since the ceiling surface in the room is almost completely open to the public, it is important to know how to repair a crack in the ceiling on your own. There are many reasons for the appearance of this defect in different places. Knowing them will help prevent problems in the future.

Types of cracks on the ceiling and where they appear

There are two types of cracks on the ceiling surface - technological and structural. The latter appear due to the impact of loads that exceed the bearing capacity of the floor slabs. This includes earthquakes, explosions, heavy equipment, impacts, etc.

According to the dynamic state, such defects are divided into two types:

  • stable - after the appearance, they remain in the same form and do not expand over time (they often appear in new buildings due to shrinkage of the building, their growth stops after 3-4 years);
  • developing - continue to increase over time (appear due to subsidence of foundations, violations of the technology of their installation, impact ground water, as a result of flooding, vibrations, etc.).

Technological cracking of the surface occurs due to the polymerization of liquid putties, adhesives or a waterproofing layer. Such defects appear due to the wrong choice of plaster or putty mixture, multiple cycles of thawing and freezing.

Such defects can appear in different places on the ceiling: at the seams between floor slabs, at the junction of the ceiling and wall surfaces, at the location of the seam on drywall coating. Cracking of the ceiling surface due to flooding or plaster peeling occurs anywhere.

Causes of cracks

There are various factors that provoke crack formation. Moreover, they may differ for surfaces made of different materials.

A crack in a plasterboard ceiling appears for the following reasons:

  1. Violation of the technology of mounting a wooden frame. Since wood products are able to change their linear dimensions due to changes in humidity and temperature, a gap must be left between the ends of the planks and wall surfaces. Otherwise, due to the deformation of the frame, the ceiling surface will crack.
  2. Incorrect puttying of seams between drywall sheets. Often the use of one putty composition is not enough. The seams must be additionally reinforced with sickle tape. This is especially true for new buildings, which will shrink in the coming years.
  3. Sudden temperature changes and indoor humidity.

Before repairing cracks in the ceiling between the plates, you need to find out the cause of their appearance and eliminate them. Only in this case, the sealing of cracks in the ceiling will not crack over time.

Causes of defects on the concrete and plastered base:

  • the seam on the ceiling may crack due to sudden changes in temperature and humidity;
  • service life expired finishing materials;
  • shrinkage of the building causes mixing of floor slabs (their joints on the ceiling most often crack in new buildings);
  • violation of the technology of installation of ceiling finishes.

Regardless of what material the structures are made of, before fixing the ceiling, it is important to identify and eliminate the causes of cracking. Only after that carry out repair work.

Tools and materials for work

Depending on the depth, location of the cracks and the complexity of the work being done, different devices will be needed.

In any case, you should stock up on such tools and materials:

  • spatulas of different sizes;
  • sprayer for water;
  • putty composition;
  • primer;
  • sandpaper or paint grater;
  • ladder;
  • polyethylene film to protect furniture and floors;
  • goggles, gloves and headgear;
  • primer brush;
  • container for mixing the solution;
  • vacuum cleaner;
  • PVA glue;
  • a piece of cotton fabric;
  • metal brush;
  • hammer, screwdriver;
  • sealant for filling voids;
  • paint mesh or sickle to strengthen the seam;
  • polyurethane foam will be needed for significant voids between the plates.

It is equally important to know how to cover up cracks in the ceiling. To work indoors with high humidity acrylic putty is suitable, and for places with normal humidity take plaster or cement mortar.

Ceiling crack repair technology

On preparatory stage it is necessary to estimate the scale of the forthcoming works. Take care to protect the furniture and floor from dirt, because the processes ahead are dusty and dirty. To do this, if possible, take out the furniture, and cover what remains and the floors with plastic wrap.

Finishing in places of cracking is cleaned with a spatula. concrete surface cleanse wire brush to the base. After that, inspect the adjacent areas for additional small cracks. If such defects are detected, the finish is considered to be larger area to expose even the smallest crevices.

Small cracks up to 1 cm wide are considered small. They are covered with plaster. Significant defects require more extensive work and the use of cement putty, paint mesh and primer deep penetration.

Repairing a crack in a plastered ceiling

Since the plaster layer is applied up to 2 cm thick, cracks in the ceiling surface are of considerable width.

When repairing them, the following algorithm of actions is followed:

  1. The edges of the gap are carefully cleaned of the old coating so that the crack does not expand and the plaster does not crumble.
  2. Using a brush or vacuum cleaner, the gap is cleaned of dust and debris.
  3. After that, the space inside the defect is filled with sealant, polyurethane foam or a piece of cotton fabric. Excess foam after hardening is cut off with a knife.
  4. Next, glue a sickle or a strip of fabric on top of the crack with PVA. The width of the glued strip should extend a couple of centimeters on each side to the ceiling surface.
  5. After drying adhesive mixture a layer of putty is applied to the glued strip and carefully leveled with a spatula.
  6. When the putty dries, the surface is sanded with sandpaper. The dust is brushed off and a primer is applied.

Repairing a crack in plastered ceiling

Now let's talk about how to repair cracks in the ceiling before whitewashing, if the ceiling surface is puttied. Putty differs from plaster in greater strength and fine composition. Because of this, only small cracks form on the puttied ceiling.

To eliminate them, do the following:

  1. The edges of the gap are cleaned of the finishing layer. To do this, whitewash or paint is cleaned with a spatula. You can use a metal brush.
  2. Next, we wet the defect with water. For this purpose, use a sprayer or brush.
  3. After absorbing moisture, we apply a layer of putty mortar to the cracks. We press it well with a spatula into the void of the crack and level the surface in the same plane with the ceiling.
  4. After a day, when the putty dries, we grind the repaired area with sandpaper.
  5. We clean the surface of dust and apply a primer. Then we paint over the place of the defect with a suitable interior paint or whiten it.

In a different way, cracks are repaired on a puttied plasterboard ceiling. The cause of this defect is the delamination of putty or paint, as well as cracking of the solution in the seam.

Follow this sequence of actions:

  • use a spatula to remove the finish from the defective area;
  • treat the surface with an abrasive mesh with fine grain and clean it of dust;
  • chamfer from the seams of adjacent sheets with a knife;
  • prime the cleaned and prepared place, let the primer dry (repeat the procedure twice);
  • apply a new thin layer of putty, and lay a sickle tape on top;
  • lightly press the sickle with a spatula into the wet putty and apply a thin layer of putty mixture, carefully level it in the same plane with the ceiling surface;
  • give the putty a day to dry;
  • sand the ceiling with sandpaper and sweep away the dust;
  • apply acrylic primer.

Traditional methods of ceiling repair - painting or whitewashing begin with careful preparation grounds. It is good if the surface is smooth without defects and flaws. Then it is enough to putty and prime the ceiling. But there are times when the plaster or concrete slab begins to crack, causing a lot of difficulties and inconvenience for further finishing. If you know how to repair a crack in the ceiling on your own, you will be able to mask the flaws and extend the life of the structure.

Types of cracks and their causes

Cracks in the ceiling are divided into structural and dynamic. Structural are formed as a result of excess loads exceeding the permissible bearing capacity on the ceiling.

Dynamic cracks are divided into the following types:

  • developing, which become larger in size as the building is used. They are formed as a result of violations during the laying of the foundation or subsidence of the foundation under the influence of an excess amount of groundwater, faulty plumbing, flooding of the basements of buildings;
  • stable. They belong to non-developing cracks, appear in new buildings and stop growing 3-4 years after the shrinkage of the house.

If it is wrong to choose the composition for the operating conditions characteristic of the room, a periodic decrease, and then an increase temperature regime causes overlap defects.

When the cause is discovered and eliminated, it is not difficult to repair the resulting defect on your own. But in the event that we are not talking about massive damage to the floor slabs, which pose a danger to the room and the people in it.

Hair cracks are otherwise called shrinkage. Such defects represent the greatest danger and often lead to deformation of the base of the foundation and the entire building. This affects the strength of the structure. Usually they are formed due to an uneven load on the foundation or with incorrect proportions and the type of composition for pouring the foundation.

The width of such cracks initially does not exceed 1 mm. Hence their second name - hair. The development of cracks is gradual. First, the ceiling is covered with a "cobweb". If you ignore the protective layer, steel reinforcement begins to oxidize under the influence of moisture entering through cracks in the ceiling. Because of this, the metal expands in size and destroys the concrete with which it comes into contact.

To prevent unpleasant consequences, it is necessary to exclude contact of moisture with the reinforcement. To do this, the floor slab is covered special formulations, which penetrate into the recesses, creating protective film at the base of the ceiling. These formulations include Sikagard® 680S, Sikagard®-203 W.

If the concrete detached from the reinforcement, the method of solving the problem is chosen taking into account the degree of corrosion of the reinforcement, as well as the area of the defective ceiling. Usually, fiber-reinforced concrete is used to solve global problems. It fully compensates for wire damage.

In the photo, a destroyed sample of fiber-reinforced concrete

On top of the fiber concrete, the compositions are applied to cement base layer from 30 to 50 mm, providing additional surface protection. Their use will increase the strength of the new shell.

More often, the depth of cracks is limited by a layer of plaster, so such flaws can be repaired with less money and time.

First, the crack is carefully primed. Then, according to the instructions, fill the recesses with a mixture, leveling the surface with a spatula. Leave the ceiling to dry for 24 hours. When the plaster is dry, grout the repaired area with fine-grained sandpaper until the surface is smooth.

If the cracks in the ceiling are large, you will have to act differently. Such gaps are additionally strengthened with a serpentine reinforcing mesh, acting according to the following algorithm:

  1. cracks are covered with putty;
  2. stick a grid-serpyanka;
  3. when the composition dries, the repaired area is re-coated with a layer of putty.

Sometimes one putty mixture is not enough, so you have to additionally use all kinds of sealants or mounting foam.

There is another way to seal cracks using homemade bandages made from linen or cotton fabric. To do this, a strip of material is cut out so wide that, when glued, it protrudes 1-2 cm beyond the edges of the gap. The flap is moistened with adhesive composition, applied to the crack and leveled. After the glue has dried, a layer of putty is applied to the fabric with a ledge.

Even when the shrinkage of the structure is completed, cracks form along the joints of adjacent floor slabs. This is affected by vibration, frequent temperature changes and other factors.

To extend the service life finishing, such cracks close up as deep as possible:

  1. first, the slots are embroidered with a hammer, perforator or chisel, removing the previous solution from the joints;
  2. then the gaps are blown with an air jet under high pressure, plentifully moistened with water;
  3. cracks are filled with mounting foam to 2/3 of the depth;
  4. 24 hours after the foam has completely solidified, the excess parts are cut off with a knife so that the cut is recessed 3 cm deep into the gap;
  5. prime the recess and edges with a latex-based primer;
  6. the remaining space of the gap is closed with a cement leveling compound, having previously pasted the sickle mesh;
  7. when the solution dries out (after 1-2 days), the joints are leveled with gypsum-based putty, and the ceiling is completely putty if the entire plane is being repaired.

Sealing cracks in the ceiling between two mating surfaces is carried out in several ways:

  • the recess is filled with mounting foam or filled mineral wool. The first option will perform better because the foam expands and adheres tightly to adjacent surfaces. After the mounting foam has dried, the surface is plastered;
  • you can eliminate cracks in the ceiling with gypsum or synthetic putty. These are moisture resistant, environmentally friendly and safe materials. For better adhesion of the composition to the surface, the cracks are first abundantly moistened with water. At the end of the repair, the composition is given time to dry, and proceed to the finish;
  • special putty is another type of material used to seal such cracks. It is sold ready for use. The composition is applied to the defective place with a spatula.

If the cracks are not deep and do not pose a danger to the ceiling, the ceiling is repaired traditional way using plaster mixture. The situation is worse when the reinforcement of the floor slab is damaged inside, and the slab is bent, and ordinary fiber-reinforced concrete is not enough. Then reinforcement is the only possible way out, which will restore the integrity of the ceiling and extend the life of the base ceiling. Such work will have to be entrusted to professional builders.

The repair includes sandwich reinforcement, in which a layer of reinforcement is applied on both sides of the floor slab. The reinforcement is selected with a section of 8-15 mm, depending on the calculated load. The number of layers of reinforcement depends on the thickness of the floor: up to 150 mm, one layer is enough, above this value, two layers are laid.

A reinforcing mesh, mounted from reinforcement of the same section, is attached to the ceiling. The size of the frame cells is 15x15 mm.

When the first layer reinforced mesh laid, the surface is poured with cement mortar. A second reinforcing layer is laid on the cement layer.

When repairing the ceiling, it is necessary to pay attention to the presence and elimination of defects. Even a seemingly small crack will become global problem and will lead to unpredictable consequences if it begins to grow deep into the floor slab.

How to fix micro cracks on the ceiling and walls, video instruction

Starting a house or apartment renovation, everyone is faced with the problem of cracks in the ceiling. It is good if they are small and there are not many of them. But how to fix cracks in the ceiling? Even a person who does not know how to do anything can easily close them up. Small cracks are sealed in the old-fashioned way using gypsum mortar. The mixture consists of equal parts of crushed chalk and sand. It may also contain synthetic components.

Such cracks are closed gypsum mortar, using a metal spatula, leveling the solution well. Such a seal is called spot puttying. Spot puttying is used when the ceiling is pasted over with wallpaper or painted with light water-based paints.

Crack Filling Technology

  • clean the cracks, removing all exfoliated parts.
  • prime the crack site well with a deep-penetrating primer, preferably in two layers,
  • prepare the mortar and close the cracks well by filling them with mortar and leveling the surface of the crack and around it with a spatula,
  • let it dry well, about a day,
  • sand well to a smooth surface,
  • paint the ceiling or wallpaper.

Repairing cracks in the ceiling with your own hands must be done in several stages with the application of small portions of putty.

Advice ! When sealing cracks in the ceiling, dirty work, the apartment will have a lot of garbage and dust. Starting repairs, if possible, take out the furniture, and cover the floor with a film. Then clean up after the repair will be much faster.

This method is good if you need to repair small cracks. And if it is deep and large, what to do? In this case, it must first be filled with some kind of filler. As a simple filler, you can use fabric strips. These strips must be laid in the crack until completely filled. From above, a crack filled with strips of fabric is sealed with a separate strip of fabric, wider and longer than itself by 10 centimeters. To prevent the fabric from shrinking in the future, the flap must first be washed and ironed. Then the fabric is soaked in glue and superimposed on the crack and leveled with a spatula. Also, it can be glued on top with a special masking mesh. The mesh is stronger and more durable. PVA glue is used as an adhesive material.

Also, these cracks can be sealed with a special material - sealant. When buying a sealant, use the advice of the seller to find the sealant that suits you.

Sealant, as well as mounting foam, is good to use for sealing cracks between the ceiling and the wall. It is also important to use sealant where there is a possibility of leakage. The sealant adheres well, has waterproofing properties and has a service life of 15-30 years. Polyurethane foam, unlike sealant, increases its volume during use. In order for cracks to no longer cause you trouble, you need to find and eliminate the cause of cracks.

Advice ! Cracks in the ceiling can tell about various problems in the house: a sewer leak, shrinkage of the building, the strength of the floors is broken. Sealing a crack will not solve the problem of the appearance of new ones if the cause of their appearance is not eliminated. Having found it, try to determine the cause of its appearance by contacting specialists.

You can prevent the appearance of cracks with a sickle. Before sticking it, you need to carefully putty the surfaces so that bubbles do not appear in the future. Serpyanka is glued to the puttied surface and puttyed again on top. This method of processing joints and corners will give you the opportunity to forget about cracks for a long time. This method is time consuming, but worth it. It is better to do preventive maintenance once every 5-10 years than to do repairs every year.

And cracks in the ceiling can be simply decorated. This can be done easily and beautifully with the help of special ceiling tiles. polystyrene boards. With the help of these plates, you can hide cracks, but you can also visually align the differences in the plates on the ceiling. To make the differences on the ceiling less visible, it is better to take a seamless tile.

Cracks in the ceiling can also occur after quality repair on a plasterboard ceiling. Where do cracks appear on a plasterboard ceiling?

There are several such reasons:

  • building settlement,
  • if the room is large, and the drywall sheets are mounted without offset,
  • if the dowels from the kit were used during installation, the dowel is a screw, since the dowel in this case does not burst well and sags,
  • during installation. U-shaped suspensions were not attached correctly,
  • when puttying the ceiling, the joints are not pre-puttyed,
  • before puttying, the ceiling was not primed, or maybe the neighbors flooded you.

If cracks appear on the suspended ceiling, you must first find out the cause.

Advice ! If you press the suspended ceiling with your hand from below, and it will move, then it does not make sense to repair cracks on such a ceiling - disassemble and redo it again.

If you still decide to close the crack, then make sure that it does not occur further. To close it on a drywall thread, you first need to embroider it, that is, slightly increase it.

Along the edges of this crack, you need to remove everything that crumbles and does not lie well. After that, it must be treated with a brush or a broom so that there is no debris or dust left, after these manipulations, prime the crack and let it dry. After it has dried, you can putty. Some use ordinary putty, and there is nothing to worry about. And you can use a special, furenfüller, especially well suited for sealing cracks in plasterboard ceilings. After sealing with putty, it must be allowed to dry for a day. Furenfüller is dry, now we apply a primer. After a few hours, you need to go through the place of the crack with satengips. Satengypsum has a fine structure and after processing it is not required to additionally clean it with sandpaper. After processing finishing putty the ceiling needs to be painted.

Advice ! If your ceiling is not white, but with the addition of color, then so that you do not have to paint the entire ceiling twice, paint over the place where the crack is repaired with a layer of paint that matches your ceiling color as closely as possible and let it dry. After you paint the entire ceiling, the patch will not be visible.

And another frequently asked question, how to close a large crack? Large cracks should be filled with metal mesh. After that, a layer of plaster is applied. The next layer of plaster is applied after the previous one has dried. After the last layer has dried, the repaired areas must be covered with a special mesh or sandpaper. Further actions described above.

How to fix a crack in the ceiling between the tiles

  • It is necessary to clean the crack from the old leveling layer,
  • using a perforator, with a special nozzle, expand the crack,
  • with a construction knife, carefully clean the seam from debris and irregularities,
  • using a paint brush, coat the seam well inside with a primer.

Advice ! It is better to choose a primer solution with a deep penetration effect.

Seal the depth of the seam with mounting foam. Let it dry and cut off the excess. Prepare building mix. So that the seam does not differ from the rest of the surface, strengthen it with a sickle. The entire space between the mounting foam and the sickle must be carefully filled with a building mixture. After drying building mix the seam is aligned with the ceiling with finishing putty.

You can close the cracks on the ceiling of concrete in rooms with high humidity using a moisture-resistant putty for internal works. You can also use a fine-grained quick-drying putty. The putty layer cannot exceed four centimeters, otherwise all your work will be redone.

In this article, we have talked in detail about all aspects of cracks. Using our tips, any of you can independently make repairs in your house or apartment. You can, of course, hire a repair company or organization, but by doing it yourself, you will save family budget which is important in our time. We really hope that this article will help you, and you will learn from it how to deal with cracks in the ceiling.

The content of the article:

If cracks appear on the ceiling in your apartment or house, then this is no accident. But it is one thing to hide the problem, and quite another to determine its cause. It is not difficult to remove a ceiling crack, but without identifying and eliminating the source of its occurrence, it cannot be guaranteed that it will not reappear after a certain period of time. Therefore, the repair of the ceiling can only be started after its diagnosis.

Types and causes of cracks in the ceiling

There are two main types of ceiling cracks - structural and technological.

Structural cracks occur in the material of the ceiling from the impact on it of excessive loads that exceed the permissible bearing capacity of the ceiling. Often the cause of its deformation is the weight of heavy equipment, shock loads, explosions, earthquakes, and so on.

According to the dynamic state, such cracks can be divided into the following types:

  • developing. These cracks continue to grow during the life of the building. They can occur when foundations are improperly installed or subsidence as a result of groundwater exposure, faulty plumbing and flooding of the building's basement, vibration from nearby railway and other factors.
  • stable. Such cracks do not develop. Sometimes they appear in the ceilings of new buildings, and their growth stops after shrinkage of the house for 3-4 years.
Technological cracks on the ceiling may appear during the polymerization of liquid finishing materials: glue, putties and waterproofing layers. Wrong selection their composition for future use or repeated cycles of freezing and thawing raw materials may cause defects in the ceiling surface in the form of cracks.

Other reasons for their appearance may be:

  • Sudden changes in air temperature in the room;
  • Temporary wear of ceiling finishing materials;
  • Errors in the technology of finishing ceiling surfaces.
After identifying and eliminating the causes of cracks between the seams of the ceiling or in its suspended structures, it is not at all difficult to deal with them, unless, of course, in question about a burst massif of a concrete slab or monolithic floor. In such cases, staying at home can become dangerous to life or health.

Preparatory work before repairing cracks in the ceiling

Before going to the store for the materials needed to repair the ceiling, you need to determine the scope of the upcoming work:
  1. To do this, remove part of the ceiling covering in places where cracks form with a spatula and clean them with a metal brush.
  2. After completing this procedure, you should inspect all sections of the ceiling adjacent to the cracks to identify additional problem areas. At a positive result cleaning should be continued until all cracks are exposed.
  3. Cracks up to 10 mm deep are considered small. To seal them, you can use the usual gypsum putty.
  4. Larger and deeper ceiling cracks will require an additional set of materials and more effort to eliminate.
Cleaning the ceiling and cutting cracks is a very dusty job. Therefore, before the start of the repair, it is worth, if possible, freeing the room from furniture and equipment or covering them with a film.

After determining the scope of the upcoming work, you can purchase materials and prepare tools. Of the tools for repairing cracks in the ceiling, you will need: a spatula 10-15 cm wide, a brush for removing the old coating, sandpaper and a spray gun for painting the ceiling.

It is also necessary to purchase the following materials: gypsum putty, sealant, PVA glue, mounting foam and paint for the finish coat. If the ceiling is subject to spot repairs, the paint must be selected in the same shade and brand that were previously used. With a new painting of the entire ceiling, you can choose any paint color.

How to repair small cracks in the ceiling

Minor damage to the ceiling will not require significant effort. The work is done like this:
  • Before you repair a crack in the ceiling, you should clean its edges by removing the old coating - chalk or paint. For this procedure, it is convenient to use a spatula and a metal brush.
  • The cleaned surface must be moistened with water using a brush or spray.
  • Then, the required amount of putty should be applied to the crack to seal the defect along its entire length and depth. Excess putty must be removed, and the surface of the repaired crack should be leveled with a spatula along the plane of the ceiling.
  • After 24 hours, which are necessary for the putty to dry, the crack site must be sanded with an abrasive mesh or sandpaper.
  • After that, the embedment site should be cleaned of gypsum dust, primed with an aqueous solution of PVA and covered finishing layer.

How to remove large potholes on the ceiling

Sealing large cracks in the ceiling requires a slightly different algorithm of work:
  1. It is necessary to clean the edges of the pothole from the old coating and its cavity from debris or plaster.
  2. Then the crack should be filled with cloth, sealant or polyurethane foam. After the mounting foam has hardened, its excess must be cut off with a knife.
  3. After that, the gap must be sealed with a sickle tape or a strip of linen or cotton fabric. Its width should be 2-3 cm more than the width of the crack. Before pasting, the material must be moistened in PVA glue and spread on the surface of a closed crack.
  4. After the glue has dried, a putty should be applied over the fabric strip and carefully leveled in the same plane with the ceiling with a spatula.
  5. When putty mixture hardens, the place of the crack must be sanded, the gypsum dust removed, finished surface primed and top coat.

Fixing cracks in plasterboard ceiling

In case of violation of the production technology or the formation of condensate in the cavity between the base and plasterboard ceiling cracks may form on the front surface of the suspended structure.

If a crack occurs due to peeling of paint or putty, the procedure is as follows:

  • Using a spatula, you need to completely remove the defective area.
  • The cleaned surface should be treated with a fine abrasive mesh and dust removed with a brush.
  • After that, the damaged section of the ceiling must be primed and allowed to dry.
  • Then you need to prepare the putty and fill it with a damaged spot on the ceiling with a spatula.
  • The applied layer should be carefully leveled taking into account the plane of the ceiling and left to dry for a day.
  • After the putty has hardened, the surface must be sanded to an ideal state and gypsum dust removed.
  • Then the problematic area of the ceiling must be primed and painted several times until its color is as close as possible to the main background of the ceiling.
  • If after that the entire ceiling is painted water-based paint, you can get it perfectly even color.
When cracks form at the joints of drywall sheets, putty cracks on the ceiling should be done as follows:
  1. Clean the crack from putty. If there is a sickle tape under it, it must be removed. If the tape is missing, the ceiling section must be stripped to its width or a little more.
  2. Then the area freed from putty must be cleaned with an abrasive mesh, and chamfered from adjacent sheets of gypsum board with a knife.
  3. Clean the area of dust and primed twice.
  4. Then the joints of the sheets and the chamfer should be sealed with putty and glued on the problematic seams filled with it, a serpentine tape.
  5. After the joints have dried, they must be treated again with putty and primed again.
  6. Then the entire area needs to be puttied, evenly distributing the material on the surface with wide spatula. To fill all the voids, this operation must be repeated after the previous layer of putty has dried.
  7. The puttied and dried up surface of the joints after a day should be sanded and primed again to ensure adhesion of the ceiling surface with the paint material.
  8. On last step work to complete the general painting of the ceiling. The procedure will need to be repeated until the trace of the former crack disappears.

Advice! When the ceiling moves from pressing it from below with a hand, the elimination of its cracks loses its meaning. In that case, all suspended structure should be disassembled and redone.

How to mask cracks in the ceiling

If there are small cracks on the ceiling, they can simply be masked. The simplest and budget option is pasting the ceiling surface with polystyrene foam or polyurethane tiles, which is distinguished by a variety of sizes, materials of manufacture and color solutions. Its installation is simple, and it can be done alone, without building skills.

To mask the cracks on the ceiling with tiles, you should follow certain rules in your work:

  1. Before pasting the ceiling with tiles, it is necessary to determine its dimensions and calculate its quantity.
  2. For correct calculations you need to perform a scheme of the ceiling surface of the room. It will allow not only to determine the exact amount of piece materials, but also the way the tiles are placed on the ceiling for the best masking of its defects.
  3. Part of the tiles, when fitting them at the joints of the ceiling and walls, will have to be cut. Therefore, the purchase of material will need to be made taking into account this factor, that is, take it a little more than the calculated amount.
  4. During installation, the joints of the tiles should not fall on the defective places of the base ceiling. Otherwise, there is a high chance of delamination. facing material due to the opening or narrowing of cracks during the operational period.
Another, but more expensive option for masking ceiling cracks is the installation of tension or suspended ceilings. For their device, surface preparation of the base structure is absolutely not required. Such ceilings can reliably mask not only cracks, but also differences in height. For tension or suspension ceiling structure you can hide, except for defects in the main surface, any engineering communications. In addition, the ceilings have an excellent appearance and contribute to the renewal of the design of any room.

Masking cracks in the ceiling has one significant disadvantage - the subsequent deformation of the ceiling is not visible. Therefore, as mentioned above, identifying and eliminating the causes of ceiling cracks is a priority before starting its repair.

How to remove cracks on the ceiling - look at the video:

Over time, cracks or small gaps can appear on the ceiling with a concrete base, which negatively affect the overall aesthetics of the finish. This problem is quite common and, of course, such defects need timely repair: cracks must be properly prepared and treated with a special solution.

Working tools and materials

  • Paint brush;
  • High table or stepladder;
  • Small spatula (10*15 cm);
  • Construction knife;
  • Metal brush;
  • Gauze or special mesh-serpyanka (for large cracks);
  • Water;
  • Capacities;
  • Deep penetration soil;
  • putty mixture;
  • PVA glue.

General ceiling repair scheme

  • 1. Cleaning the base and removing loose fragments
  • 2. Crack jointing
  • 3. Cleaning and priming
  • 4. Putty
  • 5. Laying sickle and one more putty (for deep and large cracks)
  • 6. Sanding
  • 7. Finishing.

Foundation preparation

Before you take out furniture and other household items. Overall objects and the floor must be covered with polyethylene, grabbing it with tape. Using a small spatula, carefully scrape old finish and remove all flaking and crumbling fragments from the problem area within the radius of the crack. If this is not done, the repair solution may simply deform in the future.

Now the gap needs to be "opened". To do this, carefully open the place of the flaw with a sharp knife or a corner of the spatula - expand the crack so that a kind of “V-shaped” path appears in its place. Due to this, the putty composition will lie in the crack much denser and more reliable. After using a vacuum cleaner, brushes, a metal brush, remove dust, dirt and small construction debris from the crack. Then rinse the defective area well with a brush or rag to moisten the surface and wait for the water to dry. Before applying the putty, it is recommended to prime the crack and adjacent areas with a deep penetration primer one or two more times with a brush. Instead of a primer for a primer, you can also choose diluted PVA glue, just keep in mind that after applying the PVA primer solution, you must immediately proceed to puttying.

repair mortar

As putty, special purchased mixtures, chalk or gypsum paste, as well as mounting foam and special silicone, acrylic, bituminous or other sealants are used. Also a good option repair composition is a cement mortar or tile adhesive with the addition of liquid glass for quick setting.

Most the best choice- these are modern synthetic putty compounds - although they will cost more, they are more elastic, adhere much better to the ceiling and perfectly protect it from moisture. For example, for seams, cracks and crevices in concrete ceilings, a light waterproof composition for interior work is most often used. But for small cracks, you can choose a fine-grained quick-drying paste.

To seal cracks, you can recommend KNAUF products (Fugenfüller, Multifinish, Rotband), as well as Sem Light, Pufas, Hercules, Fibrelastic, UNIS, Profi-Tex putties .

If the putty was bought in the form of a dry mixture, then make a solution: pour out a little composition, fill it with water and stir in strict accordance with the instructions. You don’t need to prepare a lot of mortar - proceed from the size of the crack. To improve the properties of the putty, you can add PVA glue (1:10) there.

Sealing cracks in a concrete ceiling and their types

Small cracks.

If the gap is very small, then it is enough to fill the recess with one layer of putty. This should be done with a small spatula. In this case, the mixture must be carefully hammered into the groove and carefully level everything on the surface “toward yourself” with verified movements of the tool at a slight angle of 25-30 degrees. It is important to remove excess putty while it is still wet. After the paste has dried (usually a day), gently sand the surface with fine-grained emery until the surface is completely smooth. Then you can move on to painting, whitewashing, etc.

Big cracks.

But much more often, quite noticeable defects are found on the ceiling, which are recommended to be glued with a special protective mesh or bandage (joints concrete slabs, seams, places above a window or window opening, corners, wide cracks). The mesh will significantly improve the quality of the repair and will avoid the formation of new cracks in the future.

Option 1.

Soak gauze or similar material well with repair mortar and seal the gap tightly with such tow. Add on top of the putty, "close" the gap and level the solution over the surface. While the putty is still wet and has not seized, lay the sickle on top of the ceiling gap so that its ends protrude slightly beyond the defective place. (Instead of sickle, ordinary gauze is often used). Grab the mesh with putty, aligning everything on the plane. After the area with the glued mesh has dried, re-putty, carefully smoothing everything flush with the plane of the ceiling, and after drying the paste, sand the repair site with sandpaper.

Option 2.

Also, the gap can not be pre-filled with tow, but putty can be applied gradually in several stages. Carefully lay the first layer of putty on the very bottom, up to about a third or half the height of the gap, carefully distributing and leveling the solution. Wait for the mixture to dry completely, then apply a second portion of the mixture, leveling the composition well, etc. Depending on the depth of the cracks, there may be several such intermediate steps. When the crack is already filled, glue sickle or gauze before the finishing layer. Apply the last layer of the mixture flush with the ceiling, smoothing the putty over the surface. Next comes polishing and decorative finishing.

Option 3.

Instead of sickle, you can use a linen or cotton bandage. The crack is prepared and a preliminary layer of putty is applied. The size of a piece of fabric is selected so that it extends a few centimeters beyond the edges of the gap. The bandage before laying must be washed and carefully ironed so that the fabric does not shrink. Then soak in adhesive solution(PVA, carpentry or cellulose glue, starch paste), wring out the fabric and lay it in place with a crack, smoothing it well with a spatula. Wait for it to dry and then carefully sand the area again. A detailed article about will help you in repairing cracks in the ceiling.

Sealants and polyurethane foam

Sealants and mounting foam can also be used to seal deep joints between ceiling and walls, especially in excessive wet rooms or in places where there is a strong risk of leaks (kitchen, bathroom, etc.). In particular, waterproof synthetic sealants are very good, which "tightly" stick to concrete base, forming a capital protective and waterproofing layer.

Mounting foam also perfectly fixed to concrete ceiling, does not fall down, quickly grabs. If the crack is excessively massive, it can be treated with a special polyurethane tubular filler. It should be borne in mind that any sealant after driving completely retains its constant primary volume, while the mounting foam expands significantly.

Sealants and foam make the process cleaner and faster. IN this case the crack must first be widened, cleaned, then carefully filled or blown out. Make sure that the excess of such a sealant does not go much beyond the crack. Then cut off the excess composition with sharp knife. Apply a small layer on top finishing putty to hide all the small bumps and bulges. After traditionally comes grinding and finishing.
