How to reupholster an old sofa and armchairs. Do-it-yourself upholstered furniture repair: tools and materials. Stage II - remove the old upholstery

When the upholstery of an old sofa becomes unusable and ceases to please with its appearance, and we don’t have money for a new sofa, the most effective solution will replace the old upholstery with a new one. In this article, we will step by step look at the process of replacing the upholstery and hauling an old sofa with a new fabric.

Before proceeding with the upholstery of the sofa, you need to determine what kind of fabric we need: color, texture, plain or patterned, natural or synthetic.

The fact is that today the textile industry offers the widest selection of various furniture fabrics. Each has its own technological characteristics, strength indicators and functionality.

For example, natural does not mean that the fabric is practical. A new sofa with tapestry or jacquard can quickly require repairs. With improper cleaning, they shed and, of course, lose their appearance.

Fabric characteristics

Flock fabric is suitable for those owners who have pets in the house. Texture density protects upper layer from the so-called hooks.

From the foregoing, it is clear that when buying fabric for yourself, you should not immediately take the first one that comes across just because you just liked it. Be sure to consult with the seller on the characteristics of this fabric, the conditions of its operation.

Material for the upholstery of the sofa, which I use the master:

Anti-claw Flock Tapestry
Leatherette Microfiber Rogozhka
Chenille Velor Jacquard

Features of furniture fabrics that everyone needs to know:

  • Glue based chenille– dry cleaning is possible. When using wet processing, it can be deformed and dry for a long time.
  • Fabric based chenille- resistant to moisture.
  • microfiber- Resistant to abrasion. Not very recommended for allergy sufferers, as it can cause seizures.
  • Flock- fully synthetic material. Cleans up great, doesn't irritate allergic reactions, due to the density of the weave of the thread, it is recommended for those who have pets.
  • Anti-claw- Very durable fabric. It is used as protection against pets, as well as various mechanical influences (cuts, punctures, tears). Due to the short pile and dense texture, the possibility of hooks and fabric deformation is excluded.
  • Tapestry- 80% natural material with the addition of synthetic thread, which gives it strength and durability. There is a one-layer and two-layer tapestry, with a pattern and a plain one.
  • Rogozhka- a fabric that is especially popular, as it has a solid base and an attractive appearance. In the decoration of the interior in the style of "ethno" it resembles burlap in its appearance.

Required Tool

After we have decided on the choice of fabric, we proceed directly to the very process of reupholstering the sofa. For work we need:

  • Sewing machine, needle, thread (polyester),
  • Hammer, flathead screwdriver, stapler,
  • Pliers, side cutters,
  • Stapler, staples 6-8 mm,
  • Sewing meter, metal ruler, square.

Necessary fittings and materials

In addition to the basic tools and fabric, you also need to prepare the necessary accessories and additional materials that will also be involved in the work:

  • Foam rubber of the required thickness
  • Edges for closing the seams (depending on the design)
  • Batting, synthetic winterizer, felt - as fillers.
  • Zippers, fasteners, marker needles.

How to take measurements and markup

With the right cut, you can save a certain amount of fabric, which is enough for additional accessories: pillows, pouffes, cushions.

The first thing to do is to remove the fabric from the sofa, keeping the old cut. It is on it that we will make patterns. Those. our task is to remove the fabric without damaging its overall dimensions.

This can be done with a flathead screwdriver or pliers. With their help, carefully remove the staples and fold them into the place provided for this.

After we have pulled out all the staples and released the fabric, we use the blade to embroider all the existing seams (longitudinal and corner).

We get individual parts, which we economically lay out on a new fabric.

Using a flat chalk or felt-tip pen, we outline the old details on the new fabric (for convenience, the fabric can be laid out on a regular home table).

Details must be numbered so as not to get confused in the future.

Tailoring of covers

  • Basting is desirable immediately in place, so you can achieve the most accurate fit of the part. To prevent the fabric from sliding on the surface, we fix it with marker needles or sewing clothespins.
  • After all the details are sewn into a common case, you can try on.
  • The final step will be sewing on a sewing machine. Here you need to take into account all the additional details: zippers, piping, stripes, frills, etc.

If you do not have sewing skills, a professional seamstress at home or a craftsman in any sewing studio can do this. To do this, they just need to provide old parts, according to which they will make precise blanks and sew covers.

Installing the cover on the frame

The cover is put on the sofa and turned upside down. This is the standard position for fixing it.

The rest of the fabric, this is about 4-5 cm, we pull it towards ourselves, but so as not to overtighten it, and with a stapler we hammer the staples over the wrapped fabric.

We punch each subsequent bracket with an interval of 3-4 mm.

The uniform tension of the fabric over the entire area is achieved due to some of the nuances of its "shooting":

  • You need to fix the fabric in four places of the frame frame, not reaching the corners of about 5-6 cm.
  • The corner pieces are fixed last.

The photo shows a simple method for making corners:

If for some reason it is not possible to accurately calculate the old cut, you can use the presented fabric consumption table:

If this is a furniture corner, then we divide the amount of fabric on the sofa in half

Using this table, you will approximately understand what footage of fabric you will need for your type of sofa.

  1. Always buy fabric with a margin if something doesn't work out. It will NOT always be possible to buy the missing quantity!
  2. Since reupholstering a sofa at home is a skill-intensive business, safety precautions must be followed, especially when removing old staples!
  3. For the convenience of the upholstery process, you can use a regular table.
  4. Before disassembling the sofa, take a photo of it, preferably each element separately. Also take a picture of the position of the sofa layout mechanism.
  5. When sewing, do not forget to give allowances of 1 cm.

Good luck to all masters!

Do-it-yourself sofa repair is not as difficult as it seems at first glance. Even high-quality upholstered furniture becomes unusable after a while, because the springs are often deformed, and the wood frame can crack due to heavy loads. Yes, you can buy a new sofa, but such a purchase can significantly affect the budget. But, do not despair, because many damages can be corrected by repairing and reupholstering the sofa.

Sofa damage: the most common problems

Of course, it is always easier to buy a new product than to repair an old one. However, with some problems, it is still possible to restore the design. We will look at the most common types of sofa damage (they apply to another upholstered furniture):

  • the fabric has lost its appearance (this is a common problem if small children or pets live in the apartment) - in this situation, only the upholstery will need to be replaced;
  • there are gaps in the seats - such damage occurs as a result of wear of the foam rubber and other components of the soft part, and here these components will need to be replaced, and in some situations repair or even replacement of the spring block is required (at the same time, when the upholstery fabric itself has a normal appearance, then you can leave it)
  • damage to the lower part of the seat - sometimes it happens that a hole breaks through the springs in the parts of the sofa frame, and in such a situation it will be necessary to replace the plywood parts, having previously disassembled the furniture;
  • cracks in the longitudinal and transverse bars of the frame are the most difficult and unpleasant problem, due to which it will be necessary to completely disassemble the structures and replace these bars.

Of course, after disassembly, it is necessary to carefully assess the damage and calculate the cost of repairing the sofa. They should be no more than 50% of the cost of a new product, because in other cases it will simply not be profitable to restore it.

What is the design of the sofa?

Before proceeding with the repair, you need to familiarize yourself with the elements that make up the design of the sofa:

If we are talking about a folding sofa, then the transformation mechanism is also included in the design. There are several types of such mechanisms, and we will tell you more about the most popular ones in the table.

Table 1. Types of transformation mechanisms

Type, illustrationDescription
This mechanism assumes the presence of three provisions. It is often installed on modern types of sofas with lamellas.
Thanks to the installation of such a mechanism, it is possible to achieve a massage effect when sitting or lying down. Meralax is metal or in the form of wooden planks.
It is not bulky, but it is very easy to use mechanism. A seat is fixed to the side of the frame, which will then move apart. This is the simplest mechanism of all existing options, but at the same time it is reliable.
This mechanism also assumes the presence of three folding options. Its main part is static, others move and are fixed with the help of locks. The accordion is installed in various modern products, in old furniture not meet him.

What are the types of springs?

The spring block is one of the main "components" of the sofa, so when it fails, there is an urgent need to replace it. In order to understand how to do this, it is necessary to understand the types of springs in more detail.

Table 2. Types of springs used in the manufacture of upholstered furniture

View, illustrationDescription

This is the simplest version of the spring design, but at the same time it has good strength. This type of spring can be called budgetary, and its main disadvantage is that with frequent use, the seat sags rapidly.

It is too a budget option springs, which at the same time differs in comfort. Of the minuses, it is worth noting that over time, the sofa begins to creak unpleasantly, therefore, even if one spring has become unusable, the block is often replaced.

The most reliable, comfortable and durable type of spring block. If we consider the most expensive option, then in the event of a breakdown it is possible to replace any part of the unit and continue to operate the sofa.

Sofa repair at home

Below we will consider the main problems in which it is necessary to perform repair work in order to restore the sofa.

Frame and transformation mechanism: step by step instructions

First of all, you need to check the condition of the sofa frame. To do this, you need to disassemble the structure.

Prices for popular models of screwdrivers

Screwdrivers

Step one: it is necessary to disassemble the sofa, remove its upholstery, filler. After that, you should carefully remove dirt and dust that accumulate inside the structure over time. In some designs, the transformation mechanism is attached to the seat and back, and in this case it is not necessary to remove the upholstery.

Step two: now you need to inspect the condition of the frame beams. They are often deformed due to various impacts. If they are cracked or broken, it will be necessary to prepare the bars exactly to the size of the structure and install them. A cracked beam can be fixed using metal corner and screws. As you can see in the photo, a fairly large number of fasteners are required for the grip to be reliable.

Step three: in some cases, it becomes necessary to replace the plywood part of the sofa. Damage occurs due to the fact that the springs push through thin plywood.

Repair of the transformation mechanism will differ depending on its type:

  1. Book. In this mechanism common problem is a broken rivet on the guide bar. To make repairs, you should disassemble the structure, fix the mechanism with clamps, and then remove the rivet and replace it. If several parts have become unusable at once, then the entire bar is changed.
  2. There are many miniature parts in this system, so it will be very difficult to repair it yourself. Most often, you have to change the roller or its wheel, and the lamella fasteners also often become unusable, so they are replaced with purchased ones.
  3. In the places of the seat, the body is damaged, due to which the lock on the transformer stops working. It cannot be restored, so you will need to install a new one.
  4. Withdrawable. In this model, rollers are usually replaced, because they are often made of poor quality materials. This mainly applies to plastic products that are rapidly deformed under pressure.

There are cases when the fittings of the transformation mechanism have not lost their original appearance, and the spring needs to be replaced. It usually deforms when there is too much load on the sofa. If there are deformed parts in the design of the mechanism, then they must be removed and replaced. Consider the repair process on a good example.

Step one: remove the spring from the transformation mechanism.

Step two: now we need to disassemble the latch.

Spring block repair: step by step instructions

During operation, it is the spring block that often fails. It consists of twisted metal elements connected at the top and bottom. The first sign of a breakdown is a characteristic creak that can be heard when trying to sit on the sofa.

Important point! Restoration of the spring block is carried out by replacing the connecting parts.

Step one: in this case, you will have to remove the upholstery and all the soft part using a special tool called an anti-stapler.

Step two: now you should determine the type of breakdown and fix it:

  1. If the metal elements are separated from each other, then they can be fixed with a wire. It is important to remember that the pointed parts of the wire will need to be bent inward.
  2. If the entire spring block has become unusable, then it simply does not make sense to repair it, because after a while it will begin to creak again. Therefore, in this case, it remains only to purchase a new one.

You can connect broken springs together with wire or springs. IN this case a dowel was used as an additional reinforcement.

If during operation a creak is observed only in a certain place of the structure, then it makes sense to fix the lining between the metal elements. Of course, this is just a temporary measure, so if possible, the block will still have to be replaced.

Filler and upholstery replacement: step by step instructions

Over time, not only the elements of the frame and springs become unusable, but also the soft part of the sofa, and then it will also need to be replaced. We tell you how to do it right.

Step one: we need to evaluate the appearance of the fabric that fits under the spring block and on top of it - it can be either felt or batting. Due to the presence of such a lining, the springs will not push through the foam rubber and rest against plywood parts. When disassembling old structures, craftsmen in most cases have to see the following picture. The batting layer has deformed, lost its original appearance, so it will not work to leave it. After you have removed this material, it is recommended to vacuum the structure to remove any remaining dust.

Step two: First, material must be placed under the spring block. It is not necessary to buy a new piece of fabric for such purposes, because you can even take an old clean blanket.

Step three: now we also have to put material on top of the spring block. We will use felt for such purposes. In its absence, you can use unnecessary carpeting.

It is advisable to roll it in two layers, then cut it exactly according to the design parameters. Now we should attach this material to the springs using a thick needle and thread (some craftsmen use an awl in such cases). Leave a step of 35 centimeters between stitches.

Step four: now we have to put the foam rubber. If the old one has a normal appearance, then it can be left. Replacement of foam rubber involves the following steps:

  1. It is necessary to purchase a filler, about 40 centimeters thick. The better the foam rubber, the faster it returns to its original shape when you press it, so it is advisable to choose an option with a dense structure.
  2. Now you need to cut a piece of foam rubber to the size of the structure and attach it with a stapler and brackets.

Step five: now it is necessary to put a synthetic winterizer on top of the foam rubber, if necessary, it can be replaced with another soft material. Alternatively, you can use holofiber - this material is durable and has a long service life. The synthetic winterizer is also fixed to the structure with brackets. At the same time, it is recommended to glue it to the foam rubber, because during operation it can slip. Now the structure must be left for several hours until the glue dries completely, and only then it will be possible to proceed to another stage.

Step six: we have to fix the upholstery fabric. You can use the old one if it has a normal appearance. However, many craftsmen choose to make new upholstery to update the sofa.

At this stage, we have to choose the material from which the upholstery will be made. To do this, we will consider the features of the most popular types.

Table 3. Varieties of upholstery

PhotoDescription
Budget, natural material that in the best way suitable for children's sofas. It is absolutely environmentally friendly, does not provoke the occurrence of allergic reactions. Of the minuses, it can only be noted that it has a short service life.

This is a very durable, embossed material, but the main advantage is that it has excellent wear resistance, does not lose its original appearance even under the active influence of the sun. However, such upholstery is quite difficult to care for, in addition, the material has a rather high cost.

This is a durable upholstery fabric that has been used since ancient times. It has good strength, but reacts negatively to ultraviolet rays, so this sofa can only be installed in a room where thick curtains hang.
The best solution would be to choose genuine leather for sofa upholstery, because this is the most durable upholstery option. The main advantage is that the upholstery does not require special care and serves faithfully. long years. However, many people prefer to use leatherette instead of genuine leather, which has a budget cost and no less attractive appearance.

A material that resembles velvet in its structure. It is very often used for upholstery of upholstered furniture, because it is environmentally friendly and does not require special care.

Soft material that last years gained particular popularity. He has good wear resistance, does not stretch and retains bright color for a long time.

Now we have to fix the upholstery on the sofa using a stapler. In this case, the fabric should be slightly stretched.

Common mistakes masters make

In order to make a high-quality sofa upholstery, it is necessary to take into account some of the mistakes that are most often encountered in the process of work:

  1. Inaccurate cutting. That is why it is recommended to cut using old upholstery. If it is absent, then it is necessary to carefully take measurements from the structure.
  2. No processing wooden elements. In case of replacement wooden beams frame, they will need to be dried and treated with an antiseptic, otherwise after a while they will begin to rot.
  3. No additional fasteners. All installed wooden parts must be reinforced with metal corners.
  4. Too much spacing between brackets. Upholstery fabric to the structure should be fixed with brackets every 20 millimeters.

Summing up

With some effort, you can make repairs and reupholster the sofa yourself, so you don’t have to buy new upholstered furniture. The most important thing is to replace all parts of the structure that have become unusable, following the instructions, and after quality repair The sofa will last for years to come.

Recently, often visiting someone you can see homemade interior items from pallets or pallets. These are structures used to transport goods. , it turns out, it’s not so difficult to do, and in terms of quality it can even be better than that, which can be purchased at the store.

It's no secret that over time, the upholstery of upholstered furniture loses its original appearance, especially if there are pets in the house, old furniture often does not fit into new interior after the repair. In this case, you should not change existing furniture for new interior items.

An easier solution would be to replace upholstery fabric and soft lining of upholstered furniture. In most cases, this is not at all difficult to do. In this short review, detailed instructions how to pull a sofa with your own hands.

Self-upholstery of sofas

It is quite possible to update the upholstery of upholstered furniture on your own or with the help of professionals. When doing work on your own, you may encounter the following difficulties that are difficult to overcome without special skills:

Problems can arise at the first stage of disassembling furniture. Sometimes without special skills and tools to do this is problematic. Therefore, having decided on this work, you need to test your strength by pulling at least a stool. On this simple task, you can hone the technology and pick up a tool.

Sofa details may have complex geometric shapes. Therefore, it is difficult for them to make the correct pattern, and then carry out the correct stretch. It will be easier to make a pattern if you copy it from an old upholstery.

Pulling a sofa book, which essentially consists of two rectangular halves and two sidewalls, is much easier than not folding sofa with large armrests and extra cushions, or when the pattern consists of several pieces of fabric.

When restoring old furniture, it may not be enough to just replace the upholstery. Often, replacement of the filler, repair of the frame, and even replacement of springs in old sofas is required.

Antique furniture requires very careful handling, it is better to entrust its repair and renovation to professionals.

For finishing, materials difficult to work with can be used. Leather is much more difficult to deal with than fabric. For the first hand-made upholstery of the sofa, it is better to choose fabric materials.

Work performance technology

This task is time-consuming, but quite doable work. Drag the sofa at home is not difficult at all, if all the steps must be performed carefully and in accordance with the recommendations and instructions.

At the first stage, the sofa is disassembled: overhead elements, seat, backrest are removed. Fasteners are useful during assembly, so they are carefully assembled.

Next, the old upholstery is removed. This is done with an ordinary thin flat screwdriver. The cover should not be thrown away, as new pieces of fabric will be cut out according to its shape. After removing the cover, you need to check the condition internal structure and clean it up.

Foam rubber requires mandatory replacement, as it has a short service life compared to natural materials. Instead of foam rubber, a relatively recently appeared synthetic winterizer, which has a long service life, can be used. In addition, you need to correct and check the fastening of the metal springs.

Then patterns are made from new material. They are very easy to make using the removed old upholstery, you just need to add a few centimeters on each side for an allowance, the excess of which is then cut off. Similarly, all fabric blanks are made for both pillows and for the sofa itself.

Upholstery fabric is best purchased with a small margin. Since with inaccuracies in size and calculations, it may not be enough and in the worst case it will not be possible to buy it in addition.

Depending on the purpose of furniture purchased various materials. They can be made from breathable natural but non-wear-resistant fabric, perfect for sleeping, or they can be made from hard-wearing leather, suitable for long-term use. permanent use, for example, in organizations.

Buying fabric or leather is a very responsible undertaking, so before pulling the sofa, you should study the photos of various design solutions, choose your own individual style, choose the right fabric and shop.

Material selection

The choice of materials should be made with great care. It is necessary to select fabrics not only for their design and combination, but also for their quality.

Textile good quality shouldn't smell bad. The pile must be firmly fixed on the base, there should be no molting. Its consumption depends on the pattern of the fabric, since in some cases it is required to set the pattern in a certain direction.

The synthetic winterizer is also not the same and requires a choice. When buying it, you should pay attention to the fact that it must be white, odorless, durable, not torn in the hands.

Foam also comes in different quality. Main hallmark is the size of the bubbles. In high-quality foam rubber, the bubbles are small, and in lower quality material they are large. The size of the bubbles, oddly enough, determines the durability and wear resistance of foam rubber.

Upholstery fabric is final stage and is carried out using a construction stapler and glue. This operation is easier to perform if you take photographs of the furniture before disassembly.

Self-upholstery of furniture at home is quite feasible, but requires certain skills and patience. A neatly executed hauling will bring pleasure and save a lot of money.

How to pull a sofa with your own hands: is it worth it and how best to do it

  • Difficulties of reupholstering upholstered furniture
  • Upholstered furniture upholstery technique
  • sofa upholstery process
  • Padding Features corner sofa

The upholstery of any upholstered furniture gradually becomes unusable or ceases to match the new interior of the room. You should not rush with its complete replacement, because it is much cheaper to restore it. In order to change the upholstery on the sofa, there are two ways: call experts at home or take the furniture to the workshop, but you can try to perform this operation yourself. We will try to explain how to pull the sofa with your own hands, and under what circumstances this should not be done.

It should be noted that this operation is not always possible, since it requires certain experience and skills that only constant practice can provide. You should not replace upholstery on upholstered furniture yourself if:

  • Do-it-yourself furniture to be restored has a very complex structure, self assembly which causes serious problems;
  • There is complexity constructive solution upholstery elements, since you have to completely repeat its entire configuration with new material;
  • Due to the high wear, not only the upholstery should be replaced, but also the frame elements and filler;
  • The furniture is quite expensive or the material that is difficult to work with (leather, etc.) needs to be replaced.

If you decide to carry out the work yourself, you should prepare necessary tools and materials and study the provided methodology.

sofa upholstery process

Do-it-yourself sofa upholstery occurs in the following order.

  • It all starts with its complete disassembly. To do this, all overhead structural elements (ottomans, backrests, pillows, etc.) are removed. Depending on the design features of the sofa, this is quite simple to do, since manufacturers, as a rule, ensure the maintainability of the product.
  • After that, using a side cutter, a screwdriver and an anti-stapler, the old upholstery is removed. This operation must be carried out with great care, as it is required to preserve the old coating as much as possible, which will serve as an ideal template for new upholstery.
  • After that, an audit of the filler and spring frame is carried out, followed by the replacement of worn parts.
  • At the next stage, the old upholstery is steamed and turned into a pattern for the new material. The resulting new structural elements of the pattern are sewn together taking into account decorative details, welts, stitching and more.
  • The final step is the assembly of the sofa, which is done in the reverse order. When attaching new upholstery fabric to structural elements sofa is best to use a mechanical stapler. During this operation, please Special attention for uniform skin tension, while avoiding distortion of the pattern.

When hauling furniture, you can slightly change its design by placing foam rubber or other filler in the necessary places.

Features of the corner sofa

Do-it-yourself upholstery of a corner sofa is carried out according to the same principles and in the same sequence as a regular sofa. But, since the design of the corner sofa is characterized by increased complexity, its disassembly and assembly take more time. It also makes cutting fabric and sewing new upholstery more difficult.

Therefore, at the beginning of work, you should adequately assess your strengths and skills. This can save you time and save materials.

Furniture upholstery - where to start?

As we already wrote at the very beginning of the article, as an example, we will talk about the upholstery of a double bed and show photos of the process.

First you need to carefully inspect the furniture, the upholstery of which you are going to change. The purpose of the inspection is to understand how it is disassembled and to identify the attachment points. In our case, the headboard was the first element to be dismantled.

What happened to that back to make it look like this? It's simple - the old leatherette cracked and began to peel off and roll down from the friction of the pillows on the back. So, having removed the back, you need to carefully study it in order to understand where to start dismantling the old upholstery. Usually the upholstery is attached to certain order and dismantled in reverse order. When disassembling the backrest, we ran into a dilemma when it was not clear how the upholstery was fixed on the sides and how the side linings could be removed. Lack of visible fasteners and no way to get to invisible fasteners led to the idea that the pads are attached with glue and / or pins. Therefore, with the help of a chisel, we carefully try to pry and tear off the side linings around the perimeter (without fanaticism, so as not to break), they finally give in and separate.

Pay attention to the cardboard tape, which was found nailed to both ends of the back. We damaged this cardboard strip when we chiseled the wooden end caps. The purpose of this tape is to create a ledge around the perimeter of both ends of the back. These protrusions are covered with upholstery material, after which the end plates are, as it were, “recessed”. This is done not only for beauty and giving volume to the upholstery. No matter how tightly you fasten the end pads, there will be a gap between them and the back. And only the creation of protrusions, inside of which the overlays are heated, hide any gaps from the observer.

We decided to replace the damaged cardboard with leather, after making it more rigid. In order to give the skin rigidity, hardness and reduce its elasticity, you need to soak it in water containing a small amount of ordinary PVA glue, and then dry it. In the photos below you can see the result of this - the strips of leather are angled upwards without bending.

After that, you can start hauling the back with new upholstery. Before you start shooting upholstery fabric, its edge should be bent (just as it is done when working on a sewing machine - by bending the edge, you prevent it from crumbling into fibers. In general, hauling furniture in its approaches is practically the same from sewing machine approaches.For example, to hide the staples with which you fasten the first edge of the upholstery - put the fabric inside out and attach with a stapler, then turn the fabric over, covering the clogged staples.We forgot to photograph this moment separately, but if You will carefully look at the photos of the backrest, located below, - you will understand what in question.

So, having changed the upholstery of the headboard with your own hands, you can proceed to the constriction of the bed base. First we need to dismantle all the elements that interfere with the removal old skin. In our case, these are the legs and side shelves.

Next, we study how the old upholstery is fixed, from which side you need to start dismantling it. In our case, the top secret fastening, from which the installation began at the factory, and from below (under the bed) an open (visible from the outside) mount was found. Therefore, dismantling was carried out in the same order - first from below, then from above. To be honest, in our case, in order to simplify installation, we decided not to use a hidden fastening from above, since it will still not be visible when the bed is closed. Therefore, we started the installation of the upholstery fabric not from above, but from below, then, evenly stretching, we began to fasten it from above. It is very important to maintain the same tension of this fabric over the entire surface of the furniture before attaching the upholstery fabric. Otherwise, the upholstery will not lie flat, but in waves or folds (where it is stretched more, there will be recesses, where it is weaker - bulges). To evenly stretch the upholstery, you can use a narrow strip cut from fiberboard. In this case, the edge of the upholstery fabric is attached to the strip, then the strip is scrolled, winding the fabric around it in one turn. After that, it is easier to stretch the entire upholstery fabric evenly along the entire length with a strip. Having stretched the fabric, the strip is fixed with a stapler, nailing it to the product along with the fabric.

As you can see, do-it-yourself furniture hauling is not such a complicated process. It took 2 days to change the upholstery of the bed shown in the photo.

Furniture upholstery (sometimes also called “upholstery”) involves a number of standard operations, which consist in its complete restoration and include special repair and upholstery work.

Today, everyone (even if he lacks design talent) can turn his old sofa, for example, into a real work of art. Such a transformation can be achieved by decorating furniture with additional decorative elements: for example, pads in a color scheme contrasting with the main upholstery, decorative cord with tassels or braid.

Do-it-yourself furniture upholstery will not only allow you to save some family budget, but also provide an opportunity to get a certain aesthetic pleasure from the manufacture of a functionally finished product.

It should also be noted that furniture upholstery belongs to the category of labor-intensive work, but if you follow a number of instructions and some rules, you will certainly achieve what you want.

When removing old upholstery from each of these disassembled parts, one should act very carefully, trying not to damage its base and to preserve the shape of the removed fabric, which will allow it to be used later as a pattern for new upholstery. After that, it is necessary to examine the condition of the internal filler of the upholstery (foam rubber, batting or synthetic winterizer) and, in case of significant wear of this material, replace it.

The upholstery of the sidewalls and other furniture elements is usually fastened with special brackets in that part of it that faces the floor and wall. To remove the upholstery, use a flat screwdriver and pliers to pull out these staples and remove the fabric.

In order to upholster upholstered furniture, you will need the following tool:

  • a special furniture stapler designed for stuffing fabric and foam rubber;
  • screwdriver;
  • hammer and nail puller;
  • a set of screwdrivers and chisels;
  • nippers and scissors;
  • wear resistance;
  • design features.

Final stage

After the newly covered elements of your structure are ready for assembly, you should install the previously removed locking mechanism on it. For a more reliable fastening of the mechanism itself on the base (frame), you can use bolts of a larger diameter, for which you first need to slightly drill holes for them. At the final stage of the assembly of the structure, the back and seat are first installed, and only then the sidewalls are fixed. After completion of assembly work, it is necessary to check the entire structure for ease and convenience of its folding and unfolding, if any.

Upholstered furniture is available in each apartment, it can be soft chairs as well as sofas. After all, we need it not only for convenience, but also for interior design. However, over time, we notice that the furniture loses its original appeal. And in this case, only new upholstery, which you can do yourself, can help you.

But you need to immediately warn you that self-upholstery of furniture is a rather laborious process. And for this you need to do everything in order:

  • To begin with, you will have to carefully disassemble the piece of furniture you have chosen: the seat, sides and back;
  • After that, you need to remove the old upholstery, while trying not to tear it, because in the future it will have to be used as a template for making a new pattern;
  • Next, we evaluate the state inner material basically needs to be replaced. After the inner material has been replaced, you can start stretching the new upholstery, while not forgetting to stretch it well;
  • The last thing left is to assemble the furniture.

Now we will consider the hauling of an old sofa-book (still Soviet times).

Foam rubber and upholstery of old furniture

Let's start first of all with the choice of upholstery material for your furniture, as it can be used: chenille, jacquard, tapestry, velor or flock.

As for the choice of mats, here you need to be guided by the following positions:

  • The density of the mat should be at least 30 units for the back, as for the sidewalls, it should be at least 40 units;
  • The thickness of the mat: for the back should be from 40 mm, for the sidewalls from 20 mm;
  • Rigidity.

In our case, the hardness and density of the material should be given the most attention, since the service life of your furniture will depend on this in the future. Because if the density of foam rubber is small, then it will undergo crumbling and deformation under loads. Wear resistance will increase high rates of rigidity, but elasticity will decrease. But there is a solution. To do this, you will need to use a two-layer filler, where the first layer needs to be made more rigid, and the second, naturally soft.

For the upholstery of the filler, it is best to use canvas or coarse cotton fabric. This will reduce the ingress of dust into the furniture.

Book sofa upholstery

First you need to disconnect the sidewalls, while unscrewing the fasteners between the sidewalls and the frame. Then we disconnect the seat and back from the frame, for this you need to remove the locking mechanism.

Then you need to unfasten the staples and remove the old upholstery. There you will find a synthetic winterizer or foam rubber layer, it was mainly glued to the sidewall plywood.

To give additional volume, you again need a foam filler, its thickness should be 30-40 mm. For a more convenient connection with the frame, foam rubber is placed on the outside of the sidewalls.

To do this, you will have to put the removed sidewall on the prepared sheet of foam rubber and use a wallpaper knife to make a pattern, so that the foam rubber completely covers the outer side of the sidewall, as well as about half inside. Also, you need to remember to make an allowance of at least 7 cm on each side. Next, you need to evenly stretch the material and wrap it along the ends of the sidewalls, while securing it with a stapler. Then from the front side in the lower part, fix the filler and wrap the top of the sidewalls, securing the foam rubber from the inside.

Then you will need to cut the canvas and completely fit the foam. When you have completed this procedure, you can begin stretching the upholstery.

For seat upholstery, you will also need to get rid of the old upholstery and filler. Here you will come across a spring block. As for it, you also need to carefully inspect the spring mechanism and replace the springs that have become unusable. You will also need to do a little repair of the frame, as it is mostly loose.

After all this, a dense fabric must be laid on the spring mechanism and attached to the spring mechanism. Next, lay two layers of foam rubber, hard and soft, and fix it in the same way. Then the foam must be covered with canvas, and then upholstery.

As for the back upholstery, here you need to act on the principle of the seat upholstery. But in this case, hard foam rubber is not used, only soft foam and it must be fixed only at the top of the frame, without leading to the bottom. All this is to ensure that when the sofa-book is decomposed, the foam rubber does not block the gap between the wings and the back of the sofa.

Now the hauling of your sofa has come to an end, you just have to put all the parts together. At the same time, do not forget to fix the locking mechanism, and make sure that it is securely fastened.

DIY furniture upholstery - how to upholster furniture

Furniture upholstery (sometimes also called “upholstery”) involves a number of standard operations, which consist in its complete restoration and include special repair and upholstery work.

Today, everyone (even if he lacks design talent) can turn his old sofa, for example, into a real work of art. Such a transformation can be achieved by decorating furniture with additional decorative elements: for example, pads of a color scheme that contrasts with the main material, a decorative cord with tassels or braid.

If you upholster furniture with your own hands, this will not only allow you to save part of the family budget, but also provide an opportunity to get a certain aesthetic pleasure from the manufacture of a functionally finished product.

It should also be noted that upholstery belongs to the category of labor-intensive work, but if you follow a number of instructions and some rules, you will certainly achieve what you want.

Disassembly and removal of old upholstery

The first thing you should do is to completely disassemble the sample of furniture prepared for reupholstering into its component parts, the main of which are, as a rule, the seat, back and sidewalls.

To completely disassemble the sofa, for example, you should remove the sides by unscrewing the bolts that attach to the base, and then proceed to remove the seat and back from it. This can be done immediately after dismantling the locking mechanism, which will allow you to completely disassemble the entire structure and separate the back and seat from each other. Before carrying out all these operations, we recommend that you fix the order of fastening the elements of the mechanism using a camera; this will greatly simplify its reassembly.

When removing old upholstery from each of these disassembled parts, one should act very carefully, trying not to damage its base and preserve the shape of the removed fabric, which will allow it to be used later as a pattern for new upholstery. After that, it is necessary to examine the condition of the internal filler (foam rubber, batting or synthetic winterizer) and, in case of significant wear of this material, replace it.

The upholstery of the sidewalls and other furniture elements is usually fastened with special brackets in that part of it that faces the floor and wall. To remove, use a flat screwdriver and pliers to pull out these staples and remove the fabric.

In the event that it is necessary to update the filler, it should be completely removed from the bases. When removing the synthetic winterizer, try to save the fragments of the filler remaining at the locations of the sidewall mounting bolts. The new filler must be pulled over the element to be updated and covered with a canvas on top, which is then attached to the base with brackets.

Updated sidewalls, seat and back

In order to upholster upholstered furniture, you will need the following tool:

  • a special stapler designed for stuffing fabric and foam rubber;
  • screwdriver;
  • hammer and nail puller;
  • a set of screwdrivers and chisels;
  • nippers and scissors;
  • marking tools (ruler, tape measure and awl).

In addition, you will need a specially equipped workplace (for cutting upholstery fabric) and a sewing machine.

In the presence of all the above conditions and tools, you can safely proceed to the hauling of the prepared furniture elements. When selecting upholstery material, they usually proceed from the following performance characteristics:

  • wear resistance;
  • resistance to light exposure;
  • ability to repel water and dirt;
  • design features.

In the course of deciding how to upholster furniture, such common upholstery materials are very often used, such as courtesan, jacquard, flock, tapestry and velor in our time. Fabric blanks used to renew upholstery are usually cut according to the pattern of the old upholstery material.

Final stage

When cutting a new upholstery blank, you should carefully ensure that individual fragments of the facing fabric match the pattern, and also so that during the upholstery process you do not confuse the front and wrong sides of it.

Do-it-yourself furniture upholstery: the subtleties of the process

Looking at the rounded shapes of an expensive furniture set in the showroom furniture store, and I want to add volume to my old sofa or chair. Do-it-yourself furniture upholstery, as well as countertop repair, is not such a complicated process and is within the power of any Real Man.

To work, in addition to desire and direct hands, you will need the following tools:

  • Kit wrenches.
  • Furniture stapler and staples.
  • Hammer.
  • Scissors.
  • Screwdrivers.
  • Pliers or pliers.

First of all, you need to determine the degree of wear of the fabric (leather) that your upholstered furniture is upholstered in, and decide on the need to replace it. If you decide to completely update the appearance of the furniture and, in addition, make it softer, you will have to go to fabric stores and buy tapestry, velor, jacquard, chinille, flock or courtesan - these are upholstery fabrics.

To add volume, you will need foam rubber or latex, possibly batting or interlining. In addition to upholstery, you need to purchase linen or coarse cotton fabric, canvas. They are needed for the initial tightening of the packing and protecting it from dust and wrinkling.

Before buying all of the above, first disassemble, for example, a chair. As a rule, all its parts (armrests, backrest, seat) are connected with long screws or studs. Unscrew all the nuts and disassemble the chair into its component parts.

Then, with a flat screwdriver, pry off the staples that secure the old fabric, and remove them with pliers. Do not throw away the old upholstery right away - it will still come in handy as a template for cutting new upholstery material. Then remove the lining and padding in the same way.

Before, in Soviet times, furniture makers used latex mats. Modern foam rubber cannot be compared with them - it wrinkles much faster, loses its original shape and begins to crumble. If you are a happy owner of a latex sofa, ottoman, armchairs and the latex is still in more or less good shape, then it is better to leave it. You will always have time to put foam rubber.

Before you start upholstery of furniture with your own hands, it is necessary to calculate the required amount of new upholstery material from the old fabric. For reliability, add another ten percent, just in case. It is better to replace the upholstery immediately on all upholstered furniture - it will come out faster, and you will only dilute the dirt in the apartment once, and there will be no disappointment from the lack of the same fabric in the store that you bought last time.

The assembly of the "insides" of furniture is carried out in the reverse order. First fasten the latex or foam rubber, then fit it with lining material, nailing it with staples from below. Sew the top cover according to the old pattern and fasten it with staples from the bottom too.

The stapler has an adjustment of the impact force of the striker. Adjust it so that the staples are fully inserted into the wooden frame bars, firmly fixing the fabric. Staples do not spare - hammer them for reliability more often.

To give additional volume to the parts of upholstered furniture (armrests, backrests), simply add one more thin sheet foam rubber. Just do not put it in the joints of the back, seat, armrests. Otherwise, it will either not be possible to assemble all the details into a single whole, or with very great difficulty. A sliding sofa, perhaps, will cease to fold.

After the process of upholstery of furniture with your own hands is completed, you can not only admire it with your own eyes, but even sit on it with your booty. Good luck!

Advantages of self-restoration of upholstered furniture

Furniture repair (restoration) at home includes upholstery, fabric replacement in other cases of damaged items: filler, frame base, decorative parts and mechanisms. After the restoration of furniture, you actually get a new piece of furniture. The advantage is that it costs less than buying a new sofa, and secondly, you yourself decide what color and texture of the fabric the old sofa will be. You can also optionally decorate the furniture with additional decorative elements that will echo the style of interior design.

In what cases furniture cannot be restored at home:

If the furniture is antiques, it is most likely better to trust the masters of their craft. Experienced upholstered furniture repair specialists can help to repair the sofa entirely without damaging the structure, improving the model, especially if it is made of natural solid wood and leather.

Leather furniture at home is difficult to repair, so trust the professionals;

When the furniture is badly broken, but you want to get a beautiful and high-quality picture as a result, the repairman will best deal with the construction of a broken sofa or chair.

How to choose fabric for furniture upholstery

Upholstery fabric with a density level of 360 g / m2 is best suited for these purposes. You should focus on the pictograms on the wrong side:

  • Armchair - means that the fabric has a medium wear resistance, great for making upholstered furniture for the home;
  • The chair is a high strength material, which is ideal for the manufacture of furniture products intended for use in in public places;
  • Curtains and an armchair - the fabric has the ability to drape.

Do not forget, if you buy fabric for children's furniture, then it should be hypoallergenic, simple and easy to clean: cotton and linen types of fabric.

For a soft headset in the living room, choose synthetics that are easy to clean and durable. good options courtesan, microfiber, faux suede and flock are considered.

It is better to upholster furniture with wear-resistant fabric with weaving natural fibers. These types of fabrics include: chenille, jacquard, velor and tapestry.

To calculate how much fabric is needed to upholster a sofa or chair, sum the width with the length, then multiply the sum by 2. For example, a sofa measuring 2x1.6 m turns out you need a little more than seven running meters matter.

For clarity, we suggest that you familiarize yourself with the table of approximate footage of fabric for upholstering upholstered furniture of different categories.

For the chair follows from the table, you will need from 12.7 meters to 7.6 meters for a folding chair-bed, and for a pouf with an armchair you will need 8 meters of fabric. For chairs, you will have to buy from 2 to 3 meters of fabric, for a pouffe from 2.2 to 5 meters. A compact sofa will require from 2.7 m, and a corner volume with decorative pillows 31 meters of upholstery fabric.

To accurately measure fabric consumption, each piece of upholstered furniture should be measured separately: backrest, armrests, pillows, surface of the product, etc. Transfer all the data to the sheet in the form of drawings and diagrams, add three to four centimeters for the filler and seams for bends.

Do not forget that you will also have to spend money on a filler, which can be used as foam rubber with a thickness of at least four cm and a density of 30 kg / m3. Use felt to isolate the springs from the foam. The filler is changed in case of wear of the old one.

Tools for the restoration of upholstered furniture

  • screwdriver straight and Phillips;
  • construction stapler;
  • pliers or anti-stapler;
  • a set of wrenches from eight to nineteen millimeters;
  • side cutters, wire cutters and scissors;
  • glue gun, glue;
  • screwdriver and drill;
  • decorative fittings, buttons;
  • strong threads for the sofa.

To cut and sew covers, prepare:

  1. universal sewing machine (industrial);
  2. tailor's scissors;
  3. metering;
  4. ten threads or reinforced;
  5. paper for patterns;
  6. crayons.

Step-by-step instructions for hauling a furniture product

  1. dismantling, which means removing parts separately (armrests, seat, cushions, backs);
  2. elimination of worn tissue;
  3. replacement of defective pieces of furniture;
  4. sewing covers and attaching new upholstery;
  5. the final stage is the assembly of the structure.

The simplest claws - easy and fast

In the house where the cat appeared, the scratching post for her becomes almost a matter of prime necessity for the owners, if they do not want to later admire the damaged things. Because in her absence, the cat will sharpen its claws on anything, most often on furniture. And if you get used to something, then it will be quite problematic to wean it off.

If a cat appeared in the house unexpectedly, or there is no time to create a stationary sharpener for claws, then the simplest ways to make them are suitable for this case. A piece of softwood log with peeled bark 70-100 cm long can act as the simplest scratching post. A wooden scratching post is very strong, durable and does not require cleaning. You can cut the log in half along the fibers and attach it to the wall.

Any, even the most durable furniture gradually wears out and becomes unsightly. The sofa, as an actively used piece of furniture, is no exception. Restoring the sofa with your own hands will restore its attractiveness and functional indispensability.

The easiest way to repair upholstered furniture is to invite craftsmen. This approach is justified if your sofa is unique and has an antique value, or if its design is very complex. In most cases, sofa restoration is a very real and economical undertaking. The question of how to restore a sofa is solved quite simply, if you spare no time and purchase high-quality material.

Useful information

The sofa consists of several elements having standard design. The main elements include the back, sides, seat. In addition, sofas may contain overhead elements (ottomans, pillows, etc.), additional mechanisms (folding mechanism, hinges, etc.) and decorating accessories. In turn, the main elements include the frame, upholstery, filler and back panel. The design of the seat also includes a shock-absorbing element.

The frames of the main elements are made of wooden blocks of different sizes. Usually, the bars are connected with adhesives, and the joints can be strengthened with screws. As a filler, foam rubber of various thicknesses and densities is used, as well as batting, synthetic winterizer or other soft synthetic fillers.

The shock-absorbing element of the seat is most often made in the form of springs, but it can also be represented by a thickened foam rubber sheet. The armrests of the sidewalls are formed by an additional layer soft material. All the main elements are upholstered on top in fabric or leather. To prevent sagging or stretching fabric upholstery tightening elements are used on the surface of the main elements (decorated, for example, in the form of buttons, rivets, etc.).

Basic principles of restoration: step by step instructions

Any restoration of an old sofa (regardless of its reasons) includes the replacement of upholstery and filler, since the materials of these elements are subject to the most rapid wear. Replacement or repair of other elements is carried out as necessary, if they are damaged.

An exception is the repair of a fairly new sofa if the frame or shock-absorbing element is damaged due to mechanical stress or due to a manufacturing defect. In this case, the upholstery and filling are preserved in good condition and their replacement is impractical. When repairing, the upholstery is carefully removed and the damaged element is replaced, after which the upholstery returns to its place.

If, after identifying damage, it was decided to restore the old sofa, then it should be determined which element will only be repaired and which will be completely replaced. Accordingly, a list of required materials and their quantity is compiled.

When carrying out the restoration of the sofa with your own hands, you should simultaneously decide on the need to make changes to the design. The introduction of the following improvements will not cause any particular difficulties: an increase in the thickness of the sidewalls; changing the shape of the armrest; changing the rigidity of the seat and back, etc.

The choice of upholstery material

Sofa upholstery is the most visible and most worn element of any sofa. The upholstery material must meet a number of requirements, such as:

  • abrasion resistance;
  • mechanical tensile strength;
  • reduced ability to concentrate dust and dirt;
  • aesthetic appeal;
  • harmlessness to humans;
  • dye fastness.

Leather upholstery has many advantages, but is expensive and difficult to do by hand. Such upholstery is used, as a rule, if the skin was on an old sofa. A good tapestry is very beautiful and aristocratic, more technologically advanced, but not much different in price from leather. At the same time, it should be borne in mind that both leather and tapestry have a long service life.

The choice of fabric color is very important both from an aesthetic and practical point of view. When choosing a fabric, one should take into account the need to combine it on different elements of the sofa design and location on the area of \u200b\u200bthe element itself. The least waste is achieved when using plain fabrics and fabrics with a small abstract pattern. Overspending of material occurs when cutting fabric with a large ornament in the form geometric shapes, lines and cells of different colors.

Dense fleecy fabric is able to hide many flaws when it is stretched. When choosing a fabric, it is necessary to check that the pile is firmly fixed to the base. Cotton fabrics are not practical, wrinkle and do not have abrasion resistance. Velor fabrics look good, but have low wear resistance and actively collect dust.

Filler selection

Foam rubber and synthetic winterizer are widely used as a filler. When choosing a material, you should especially pay attention to its quality. The synthetic winterizer should have a white color without significant shades. It shouldn't come from unpleasant odors. The strength of the synthetic winterizer is such that it is difficult to break it manually; if it is easily torn, then this is a poor-quality material.

In the seat and backrest, foam rubber with a thickness of at least 50 mm or several layers with a thickness of 20 mm is usually used. The structure of high-quality foam rubber contains very small pores. When buying a material, you should check its elastic properties: after pressing the foam rubber with your hand, it should quickly return to its previous position.

Dismantling the sofa and its elements

Restoration of the sofa begins with its complete disassembly. It is done in the following order. All overlays and decorating elements are removed. The sides open up. The mechanisms for folding the sofa and fixing the elements are being dismantled. Separate back and seat.

Complete disassembly of the sidewalls includes unscrewing the legs and fittings, removing the upholstery and removing the filler. The armrest is removed. The strength of the frame is checked.

Disassembly of the back begins with the removal of the back panel. Then the tightening elements are dismantled and the upholstery is removed. The filler is removed. The strength of the frame is checked.

Dismantling the seat of the sofa includes the dismantling of the tightening elements and the removal of the upholstery. Depreciation elements are removed. The filler is removed. The strength of the frame is checked.

It should be borne in mind that in a number of sofa designs, the upholstery of the back and seat is carried out with one continuous piece of fabric for both elements.

Often the seat of the sofa is installed on a pallet. Its separation and disassembly completes the disassembly of the entire sofa.

Open new upholstery

The easiest way to cut a new fabric is through the old upholstery. If it was possible to remove it carefully, then it will serve as a template for a new upholstery. With this cutting, it is advisable to add 1-2 cm in all directions, providing an allowance and facilitating the subsequent stretching. If a decision is made to expand the sidewalls, then the corresponding change is taken into account when cutting. If it is impossible to use the old upholstery, all elements are measured using a tape measure and a meter ruler. Then a pattern is made on paper and cutting fabric.
