Planting roses in the ground in autumn. When to plant roses in spring and how to do it. Planting hole preparation

Delicate, chic, fragrant, bright - all these epithets are addressed to roses, which have been a constant symbol of love since ancient times. Homeowners have the opportunity to grow luxurious roses on their own. An important step towards this is planting roses in autumn. Some gardeners fear that the bushes will not have time to take root before the onset of frost. But these fears are absolutely groundless - a flower planted on time will have enough time to take root well before winter.

Planting roses in autumn

  • It is advisable for residents of the southern regions to plant seedlings at the end of September - October. This time is quite enough for the roots to take root in the ground, and the onset of cold weather stops the development of the kidneys.
  • Owners garden plots living in middle lane, must remember that the best period planting roses in autumn is the second half of September - the first decade of October.
  • In the cold northern regions, it is advisable to plant roses, starting from the end of August, having previously prepared a place for this.

Different climatic zones have their own nuances. Therefore, in order to succeed, and the autumn planting of roses has brought the desired results, you need to independently adjust the time for such work - approximately 30 days before the expected onset of cold weather.

Planting roses in autumn with an open root system

Planting roses in autumn with an open root system requires right choice places. Roses feel comfortable in unshaded areas that are well ventilated. Indeed, due to air circulation, roses are less likely to suffer from fungal diseases. If possible, it is advisable to check the status ground water- it is important that there is no stagnation.

Planting rose cuttings in autumn

Planting rose cuttings in autumn should be done in loose and pre-fertilized soil. If the fertility of the soil raises any doubts, you need to apply high-quality fertilizers to it a couple of days before work. In order not to damage the roots of a young plant, it is necessary to refuse to use unripe manure for this purpose.

Methods for planting seedlings

There are two methods that are used when planting roses in the fall in the ground is required.

The first of them involves at the beginning of work in the landing pit add some fertile soil. Then, lowering the seedling into the hole, you need to carefully distribute the roots. The soil should be about 3-5 cm higher than the grafting site. Fertile land should be filled up gradually, with its periodic compaction. Around the bush, it is necessary to make a small hole so that when moistened, the water lingers. After that, the bush cuttings need to be watered. After the water leaves, it is imperative to look at the state of the vaccination and, if necessary, add more land.

Planting roses with cuttings in the fall in the ground is carried out at different depths. If on garden plot clayey soil, it is better to plant plants not very deep. On sandy soils, planting is done deeper.

For planting seedlings in the second way corneal stimulator is required. It can be sodium humate, "Kornevin" or "Heteroauxin". Further work is carried out as follows:

  1. The root stimulator is poured into the pit, after which the seedling is placed in it.
  2. Gently holding the stalk, the earthen mixture prepared in advance is slowly poured out. During this procedure, periodic tamping is necessary with a slight stirring of the seedling so that the root space is completely filled.
  3. Next, you need to check that the plant sits securely in the soil.
  4. At the end of the work, the future rose bush needs to be watered.

Both methods are quite simple and each grower chooses how he will plant roses. Planting and caring for these plants in the fall also involves hilling the ground, after which the seedling needs to be covered with something - this can be wooden box or any other material (but not fabric).

The main stages of planting roses

At the very beginning of work, it is required for each seedling prepare a hole, the size of which would correspond to the root system of the plant.

The distance between the future rose bushes should be at least 80 cm, and if roses are planted in rows, then they should be a meter or two apart.

As mentioned above, planting in the fall is more preferable for roses. Landing time also plays an important role. During operation, it is advisable to act as follows:

If it is not possible to plant the newly purchased seedlings immediately, they must be placed in water or wrapped in a damp cloth and wrapped in foil.

Features of planting climbing roses

Climbing roses look very elegant in any area. Caring for this beauty requires a lot of effort and time. However, all these difficulties are not terrible for true lovers of beauty, so planting a climbing rose in the fall is one of the most interesting activities for many flower growers. If a grafted bush was previously purchased, then during planting it is necessary to ensure that the place where the graft is located is at a depth of 5 cm. This indicator must be repelled when preparing the pit. The root system in the pit should be located freely - this will help the bush to firmly gain a foothold in the soil.

The pit for planting is covered with soil prepared in advance, after which the earth is carefully compacted. Shoots that are pruned before planting are attached immediately to the support. This will help direct their growth in the right direction. This is how climbing roses are planted in the fall, the video below gives more about this. detailed information. The last steps to be performed are irrigation and hilling.

The article was prepared by Nina Butvinskaya, a garden care specialist for.

Autumn announces itself with bright colorful foliage and a gradual decrease in temperature. All this sets up not only us, people, for the cold season, but also plants, whose internal clock reminds us that it is time to prepare for the upcoming winter. Roses have adapted to the dark season and meet winter in hibernation. And in order to prepare for winter period dormancy and spring awakening, roses pump nutrients and vitamins from leaves and accumulate them in wood and roots. The subsequent leaf fall for roses is like a temporary shutdown of their engine, because the leaves, receiving light, water and nutrients, generate energy for growth and flowering.

Most best time for planting and transplanting, this is the beginning of the dormant period. For this reason, gardeners have been planting trees and shrubs in autumn for many centuries. Rose seedlings without leaves, which are at rest, can be stored in a cool room in winter, but after winter storage their quality deteriorates as they weaken. Therefore, it is desirable in autumn period plant freshly dug seedlings in the ground.

Autumn planting is carried out before the onset of stable frosts (until mid-October). In the event of a short-term drop in temperature to negative values, the planting of roses should be postponed until warming. Of course, in cool damp weather it is not always pleasant to work in the garden, but for roses it is perfect time when the earth will retain moisture until spring. Seedlings have time to take root before frost and in the spring they immediately actively grow.

No compost when planting roses!

How can it harm newly planted roses? Compost contains a lot nutrients, which from a chemical point of view are "nutritional salts". These most nutritious salts have hygroscopic properties, that is, they can draw moisture from the plant. Therefore, the plant, instead of growing quietly, must constantly struggle with the osmotic pressure of the soil solution. The salt concentration in the plant sap must be higher than the salt concentration in the soil solution, otherwise the soil solution will draw fluid out of the plant, causing the plant to die. Of course, this is not always the case because the compost is not homogeneous. Any handful of compost soil is different in composition - it all depends on what elements it consists of. Therefore, planting with simultaneous composting is theoretically possible, but it is always a risk.

Rose seedlings with an open root system have enough energy to form roots, with the help of which the plant absorbs nutrients and trace elements from the soil. Since roses after planting have enough of those nutrients that are in fertile soil, the first top dressing with fertilizers is applied only at the end of the first flowering.

We recommend making compost in the second or third year after planting, when the roots of the rose penetrate deep enough into the soil. Compost should be added to upper layer soil, followed by embedding by 5-10 cm, only in this case it will give best effect, because it is in the upper soil layer that a sufficient amount of air and bacteria enters, which are necessary for the development of the compost decomposition process.

Proper planting of roses!

1. Distance between bushes

The distance between rose bushes in a flower garden depends on characteristic features varieties, shape and size of the bush, the intensity of growth of shoots. So, tea and flower bed roses are planted at a distance of 40 - 50 cm from each other (4 - 5 plants per 1 square meter). When planting in rows, we recommend using up to 5 plants per 2 linear meters.

Bush and it is recommended to plant at a distance of 1 - 1.5 m, English and historical roses - at a distance of 1.2 - 2 m. With a tight fit at a distance of 1.2 m, you will get a beautiful dense hedge from roses. When planting single bushes, the distance between them should be 60 cm.

Curly roses can also be planted at a distance of 80 cm from each other. Distance between climbing roses of the Rambler group depends on their strength of growth and on the size of the plot. If we talk about general recommendations, then for vigorous varieties, the distance between the bushes should be 2 m, and for low-growing varieties - 1 m.

Keep a distance between roses and other plants, they must have enough space for growth and development. Roses do not tolerate the proximity of plants with intensively growing roots located near the surface of the soil, which compete with them and can simply force them out. For example, the distance between a rose and a decorative lavender bush should be at least 60 cm. We do not recommend planting any other plants under the rose bush. The area around the bush within a radius of 60 cm should be free.

2. Planting time for open-rooted rose seedlings

Most auspicious time for planting rose seedlings with an open root system - this is from mid-September to mid-October. More early boarding and warm autumn adversely affect seedlings, which can wake up dormant buds. Late planting and a very cold autumn increase the likelihood that rose seedlings will not have time to take root and suffer from frost in the winter.

3. Storing seedlings before planting

If for some reason it is impossible to immediately plant the acquired seedlings, the exposed roots are wrapped with a wet cloth or covered with moss or peat, wrapped in polyethylene film and kept in a cool place for several days.

4. Preparing seedlings for planting

Pre-purchased rose seedlings need to be prepared for planting. Remove the film in which the bare roots were packed. Carefully inspect the bush, remove damaged roots, remove leaves. Immerse the roots of the seedling in a bucket of water for a few hours - a day at the most. For the fastest rooting, you can add a root stimulator to the water.

5. Pruning seedlings

6. Landing

First of all, for each seedling, you need to dig a hole about 40x40 cm in size and 40 cm deep. The soil taken out of the hole should be mixed with special soil for planting roses or peat. To improve soil aeration, add lava granules.

To improve sandy soils, namely, their ability to retain moisture, it is recommended to add peat or bentonite flour. During autumn planting no need to make compost and other fertilizers! They can burn the fine root hairs of a rose. When planting, it is important not to bend the roots, but to evenly place them, falling asleep with earth. The planting depth should be such that the root neck of the seedling or the grafting site is five centimeters deep relative to the ground (three fingers wide).

In some rambler roses, the ground part is almost at right angles to the roots. In this case, place the seedling in the center of the hole, straighten the roots, while the shoots can safely lie horizontally on the soil surface.

Fill the hole with soil, lightly compacting it with your fingers so that it fits well with the roots. After filling the hole above the ground, only the upper part of the shoots should look out - approximately 15 cm.

7. Watering

Planted bushes are watered abundantly so that the soil settles.

8. Hilling

Planted bushes must spud, forming a roller 10 cm high! After that, the rose should peek out of the ground by only 5 cm.

Hilling protects the young seedling from frost, retains moisture, and in the case of spring planting - from the sun and winds. In the spring, when the plant begins to grow and its young shoots reach 10 cm, the roller from the ground can be leveled.

Planting container roses

Many gardening centers and farms, nurseries, offer rose seedlings in pots with a closed root system, the so-called "container roses". The term "container" means in gardening pots with a volume of five liters or more. The advantage of buying a rose in a pot is that it can be purchased and planted at any time of the year, in addition, unlike roses with bare roots, it is possible to estimate the growth, size of both the plant itself and, often, the flower. However, be careful, behind all the obvious advantages, of course, there are also disadvantages. The root system of these seedlings is not very developed, and under adverse conditions in the first two years after planting, they sometimes die. Planting such a rose in open ground in warm and non-rainy weather, it does not always go without problems, since under such weather conditions the plant can feel the fullness of stress. planted in the ground will require more frequent watering than a similar open-rooted rose planted while dormant. Certainly, young seedling can be helped by watering regularly, and if necessary, then every day. But this is already additional trouble for the gardener. It's a shame, leaving a new beauty for a couple of days without watering, to find it irretrievably dried up.

However, let's move on to landing:

1. Preparing the landing pit

Dig a hole that is at least twice as large as the pot in which the rose seedling grew. Mix the excavated soil well with humus, you can add 2-3 handfuls of special soil for growing roses or peat. Never use compost. It contains a large amount of nutrients that are quickly weathered in warm weather, as a result of which the plant can be subject to double stress. With composting, it's best to wait until next year! In heavy soils, it is recommended to add components that improve its aeration, for example, lava granules. Light soils can be improved by adding rock or bentonite flour. Both of these elements have the ability to retain water in the soil, and therefore the benefits of them in subsequent years will be worth their weight in gold!

2. Nutrient supply

As a rule, container roses do not need additional feeding when planting. Therefore, postpone fertilizers until better times! If this is unavoidable, then three weeks after planting, a maximum of one tablespoon of purely organic fertilizers can be applied to the topsoil. "Obsolete advice" to contribute organic fertilizers under the root of the plant does not help much, because in the soil at a depth of 40 cm there are few bacteria and even less oxygen, which makes it difficult for fertilizers to work. As a rule, the soil mixture contains enough nutrients for the first year of life. During planting, you should not feed the rose with fertilizers so that in search of these same nutrients, it forms roots that go deep into the soil.

3. Landing

To remove a rose from its pot, place your palm on an earthen ball and run the stem through your fingers. Then turn the pot over so that the earthen ball lies completely in the palm of your hand, carefully remove the pot with your second hand, being careful not to shake the earth from the root system. If the pot does not come off, tap on it to loosen the soil.

In order to have more of the root system inside the container, self-rooted roses are often planted in a container so that the grafting site is above the soil surface. When transplanting them into open ground, pay attention to the fact that the grafting site is deepened into the soil by 5 cm, as well as for seedlings with bare roots.

Fill up the rose fertile soil, slightly compacting it. Then water the planted plant abundantly to settle the earth and fill the voids around the root system. Do not compact the ground too much, as too dense soil can harm the roots of the plant and slow down its growth. At first, water young bushes more often.

You can plant roses in spring, summer and autumn. However, landing in any of these periods has its own characteristics. This must be taken into account. Now we will talk about the rules of autumn planting.

Planting roses in autumn

In autumn, roses are planted from mid-September to mid-October. If you plant a little earlier, the bush will take root and the aerial part will begin to grow actively, and the root system will noticeably lag behind in growth. This can even lead to the death of the plant in winter.

Where is the best place to plant. A place in the sun perfect option, the semi-shade is also suitable (a place where the sun shines for several hours a day). Roses planted in the shade do not bloom well and will hurt endlessly.

After planting, the plants must be watered.

Do not plant in lowlands where water accumulates in spring. Plants will certainly survive the summer, and most likely they will dry out in the winter. If there is simply no other place, then make a high bed.

Preparing seedlings for planting. Carefully inspect the roots, if they are long, it is better to shorten them. But even short roots still need to be trimmed slightly. Just refresh the cut, then callus forms faster. The cut must be white color if it is brown, then the roots have begun to die. Trim until the cut is white.

root collar purchased seedlings are often wrapped with electrical tape - it must be removed.

Landing holes. Planting holes are prepared based on the size of the roots. If the land is not particularly fertile, then pour a nutrient mixture consisting of sand, peat and sod land in equal proportions. After that, there should be enough space left in the planting hole to accommodate the root system. The roots should be loose and in no case be wrapped up.

How deep to plant. It is necessary to plant seedlings so that the root neck (grafting site) is in the ground at a depth of about 5 cm. With such a planting, the cultivar will take its additional roots, and the rosehip shoots will most likely not break through the soil layer. You will then have less problems with wild growth.

Landing. Lower the seedling into the hole, straighten the roots and carefully pour soil mixture. Create a watering hole and water well. Watering is necessary even if the ground is damp. After watering, the earth in the planting hole will compact and there will be no air voids around the roots, and this is very important.

When the water is absorbed, sprinkle the earth if it has settled heavily and cover the hole with some kind of mulch.

Pruning the seedling after planting. This important point! At spring planting seedlings are pruned, leaving only a few buds. When planting roses in the fall, seedlings should not be cut in any case. After pruning, the plants begin to produce young shoots, and there is no time for them to ripen. With the onset of cold weather, they will surely die. Therefore, when planting in the autumn, it is better to postpone pruning until spring.

The shoots of young seedlings are elastic, flexible, and when sheltered for the winter, they are simply bent to the ground.

How far apart should roses be planted?

Between the bushes leave:

  • Tea - hybrid and floribunda roses 50 - 60 cm.
  • English roses 70 - 80 cm.
  • Climbing roses and large scars 1 - 1.5 m.

Autumn rose care

Autumn rose care is the preparation of plants for the upcoming winter. Only healthy bushes with well-ripened shoots will successfully survive the winter. In order for the shoots to ripen well, it is necessary to exclude all factors that provoke the growth of young shoots. First of all: nitrogen fertilizing in the second half of summer and even more so in autumn, abundant watering, pruning of shoots in early autumn.

autumn pruning

Top dressing. In autumn, roses do not need to be fed. Spend the last top dressing in August. It should be only phosphorus-potassium (without nitrogen). Phosphate fertilizers promote root growth, and potash fertilizers increase the winter hardiness of plants, this is just what we need. In the store you can pick up special autumn fertilizers for roses, or you can use the old, proven ones: superfolate, potassium salt, potassium chloride.

How to water. If the autumn is rainy, you can not water at all. In dry weather, it is necessary to water, but moderately. In winter, plants should receive moisture, especially if the shelter is “dry” in winter.

Transplanting bushes in autumn

A rose plant is quite unpretentious and easily tolerates a transplant, but you need to know the basic rules.

When is the best time to transplant? Roses should be planted and transplanted in autumn in September - October. Choose a cloudy day for this or start work in the late afternoon when it gets cooler.

The most important thing in transplanting roses is to carefully dig out the bush, being careful not to damage the roots. Although, if the plant is already old enough, this will be difficult to do. But even if some of the roots are damaged, this is not fatal for a rose, it will restore them quickly enough.

Start digging the bush from all sides, gradually deepening. Sooner or later you will reach a tap root that goes deep into the ground. You still can’t dig it out, you just have to chop it off.

After that, try to get the bush out of the hole without breaking the earthen ball. To carry the plant to a new place, you can use a large bag or piece of film, tarpaulin, which is prepared in advance.

We transplant the rose to a new place. We are preparing a landing pit a little over size root system with an earthy clod. If the land is poor, then dig a hole a little more and add fertile soil there.

Rose transplant.

When transplanting, do not forget to deepen the root neck into the soil by 5 - 6 cm. If it was already deepened during the initial planting or you are transplanting a self-rooted rose, then plant the plants at the same level at which they grew.

The transplanted rose must be carefully watered and the hole mulched. tall bushes tie it to a driven stake, otherwise the wind can tilt the plant and then it will be difficult to level it. Set aside pruning until spring.

Autumn pruning of roses

For inexperienced gardeners, pruning roses is the real deal. headache. They will approach the bush with a pruner and try on for a long, long time - what is there to cut off.

In fact, this procedure is quite simple. You just need to understand what, why and when you need to cut. Don't remember, just understand. Today we will talk about the autumn pruning of roses.

So: autumn pruning, by and large, roses are not needed. Roses are pruned in the fall only to make them easier to cover for the winter. If it is possible to bend the bush to the ground - bend down and cover. Do the main pruning in the spring.

The only thing that must be done is to remove all young, unripe shoots. They cannot be left. Not only do they have no chance to survive the winter, but they can also become a source of infection for the entire bush.

The situation is similar with the leaves, they are also recommended to be cut, collected and burned. Of course, removing leaves from a tea-hybrid rose is not a difficult task, but with big bush climbing rose ... I climbing roses I never cut the leaves, it was always a pity for time and there were never any problems. How you do it is up to you.

The basic rule of autumn pruning: Pruning roses in autumn can be started when at least the night temperature is below 0º.

Make cuts oblique (so that water drains from them faster) and cover them with garden pitch.

Autumn pruning of hybrid tea and floribunda roses

This is what a trimmed tea bush should look like - hybrid roses before sheltering for the winter.

It is unlikely that adult bushes of such roses will be bent to the ground, so they are usually cut off in the fall. This is done very simply, all shoots are shortened to 25 - 30 cm. According to the rules, the cut must be made oblique and 0.5 cm above the bud located on the outside of the shoot (a young shoot grown from this bud should not grow inside the bush, but to the side ).

In the fall, you can forget about this rule and cut as you like. During the winter, the tops of the shoots will freeze, dry out and they will still have to be cut again in the spring. Then everything must be done according to the rules.

In the photo you see how a cropped bush of tea-hybrid roses should look like before shelter for the winter.

Pruning ground cover roses

These roses are the easiest to bend to the ground, so they do not need any pruning. Remove only faded flowers from them.

park roses

This group of roses also does not need autumn pruning. Remove only old flowers and fruits.

Pruning climbing roses

Climbing roses bloom on the previous year's shoots and therefore should not be heavily pruned. Bushes grow very large, with powerful shoots. For winter shelter, they must first be bent to the ground, and this is almost always very difficult to do. To facilitate this task, you can cut out old, broken shoots and shoots that grow “in the wrong direction” and interfere with shelter in the fall.

Shrubs, English and standard roses

For all these roses, only unripe shoots, dry branches and old flowers are removed in the fall.

Rose cuttings in autumn

An interesting video clip about the autumn cuttings of roses:

Most rose lovers take cuttings in early summer. Some get good results, some don't. Very often, failures are associated with increased summer temperatures. For rooting, 24 - 27 degrees of heat is most suitable. And if it’s +35 outside, then what kind of can is it under a can or under a film in a greenhouse? Take root and survive in such conditions young plant pretty hard.

I want to talk about a method of cutting roses in the fall, which is devoid of this and many other shortcomings. Of course, the method is not new, but not everyone knows about it. Some know, but do not use, not particularly believing in its effectiveness, and the method is not only simple, but also effective.

Preparing a site for cuttings. If you have a greenhouse buried in the ground, then it is ideal for autumn cuttings of roses. You can dig a trench as deep as a spade bayonet or a little deeper. If clay appears at the bottom of this trench, then dig a little more and fill it with earth mixed with sand.

One important condition: this trench or greenhouse should not be flooded with water either in winter or in spring.

Preparation of cuttings. When you cut the roses in autumn, cut the cuttings about 20 cm long with 4-5 buds. Leaves are not needed, remove them immediately.

Planting cuttings. Stick the cuttings into the ground to a depth of 5 - 6 cm, so that two buds are in the ground, and the rest are on the surface. Fill the greenhouse tightly with fallen leaves and cover with lutrasil. Nothing else needs to be done until spring.

In the spring, make a film shelter over the greenhouse, water, ventilate, and when you realize that the cuttings have taken root, gradually remove the film.

The second part of the video, what happened to the cuttings in the spring:

As you can see, autumn cuttings of roses are simpler than summer ones, endless spraying is not required, and in general care is much easier.

At the end of the article, I would like to say a few words about garden tool. First of all, about the secateurs. When working with roses, we use this tool very often. First of all, it must be well sharpened and in good condition. A dull, loose pruner injures plants and tests the gardener's nerves.

Now available in brick-and-mortar stores and online huge selection variety of secateurs for every taste. Women - flower growers should pay attention to the secateurs with ratchet. With it, you can cut thick, dry branches with minimal effort and what is not less important, the cut is even, smooth.

Ratchet pruner GRINDA 8-423033_z01

While looking at a photo of such a pruner, it's just Nice picture and only when you take it in your hands you understand how convenient it is.

In order not to injure your hands, work with gloves. Only not in ordinary ones, but special ones for working with thorny plants.

LISTOK gloves for working with roses made of imitation leather.

In such gloves you will work calmly without fear of injuring your hands.

All experienced gardeners believe that planting roses in the fall is the most suitable option for nai better rooting these luxurious flowers and creating favorable conditions for growth. IN autumn time there are no temperature drops, humidity stabilizes, it is not necessary to provide plants with constant watering. Another significant advantage of autumn planting is the opportunity to acquire healthy seedlings, and not specimens weakened and depleted after winter. To grow the "queen of flowers", you need to decide on optimal timing for planting, choose seedlings that can adapt to any weather, follow simple rules for caring for a rose.

The period from early autumn to mid-October is the right time to plant roses. Do not plant too early - shoots, buds will begin to sprout, and the plant will not survive winter cold. Planting dates depend on the climate characteristics characteristic of the region. So that the plant has time to strengthen root system and successfully overwintered, it is recommended to plant roses 2 to 3 weeks before the onset of frost.

Features of planting seedlings in autumn

Simple rules for planting roses will help even inexperienced gardeners grow beautiful flowers:

  1. The most important thing when planting roses is to provide an acceptable distance for the development of flowers.
  2. Choose a lighted place, but closed from the scorching rays of the sun at noon. If planted in shady areas of the garden, the rose may die, and direct midday Sun rays burn the leaves. It is recommended to root seedlings in the southeast or west side of the garden, so that at noon the shade covers the roses, and in the morning the sun caresses the flowers with its warm rays.
  3. It is necessary to plant under a slope at an elevation of 30 - 40 cm. In this case, the plant will overwinter even in severe winter frosts, and in spring melt water these beautiful flowers will bypass.
  4. Humidity should be taken into account when planting. An overestimated level of moisture will adversely affect roses. The most optimal soil acidity is 6.0 - 6.5 pH.
  5. It is not recommended to select land for planting on which cherries, hawthorn, apricots and other rosaceous plants grew.
  6. Planting roses in the ground in autumn is carried out in warm calm weather.
  7. Seedlings need to be selected with a developed root system, the number of shoots is at least 3 pieces and the diameter of the upper root is 8–10 cm. Gently scratch the root with your fingernail - it should be of an elastic structure, white in color.

Seedling preparation

Before planting, seedlings should be soaked in water for 10 hours. After soaking, the roots are cut to 20 cm, and the damaged ones are removed. All dry branches should also be eliminated, and the rest cut off to healthy shoots. For better rooting, you can dip the plants in a solution of clay and mullein with one tablet of heteroauxin.

Planting process

If you follow a simple algorithm of actions when planting roses in the fall, even the most fastidious specimens will delight you with blossoming buds in the spring:

  1. Clear the area of weeds.
  2. Dig up the soil half a meter, with fertilizer (1.5 kg of rotted manure or compost for each seedling). Apply ash and mineral fertilizers.
  3. The planting hole should be wide and deep - 60 by 50 cm. It is recommended to prepare it in the spring, or at least 2 to 3 weeks in advance. 10 days before planting, the wells are filled with water, humus is added.
  4. Place the seedling in such a way that the thickening between the rhizome and the branches is 2 to 3 cm below ground level. Tamp the soil, the roots should fit snugly to the ground.
  5. Water the rose generously. If the earth has settled after absorbing water, add the soil mixture on top.
  6. Do not plant flowers too densely - this can provoke diseases in plants, they will not gain color well. It is also not recommended to form too rarely - the earth around the bushes will dry out.

How to care for a rose after planting?

After the onset of the first night frosts, it is worth taking care of the covering material so that the planted rose is more comfortable to survive long winter. The following are recommendations on how to shelter plants for the winter:

  1. Cover the soil with fir branches.
  2. Top with dry leaves, shavings, sawdust with a layer of 15 - 20 cm.
  3. Press down the insulating layer with the remaining spruce branches.
  4. Install metal or plastic arcs up to half a meter high.
  5. Cover the frames with wrapping paper or agrofibre.
  6. Until the temperature outside reaches -11 degrees, there should be a gap between the covering material and the arcs for ventilation. With the threat of severe frosts, the structure is tightly closed until spring.

Is it possible to plant roses in autumn

This question is asked by many flower growers, especially those who first decided to plant a magnificent plant in their garden. There are no prohibitions on planting roses in the fall. It is believed that this is the ideal time for the seedlings to take root well and overwinter. Enough moisture in autumn, keeps comfortable temperature air and soil.

When is the best time to plant roses - in spring or autumn

There is an interesting observation. Experienced flower growers prefer planting roses in the fall, and beginners postpone the event to spring. This is explained very simply. It is easier for novice gardeners to monitor and care for seedlings in the spring. Not required to provide temperature regime during the winter months, which seems too difficult. Experienced rose growers pay attention to the benefits of this time of year. In autumn, plants are sold with flowers, so it is impossible to make a mistake with the choice of variety.

Climatic conditions at the end of the year allow for maximum survival. There are pros and cons of autumn planting. If you group them, you can determine which time of the year is preferable for a particular gardener.

Advantages:

  1. More active growth in spring compared to plants planted after winter.
  2. Good air and soil humidity, stimulating the development of the root system of a rose seedling.
  3. No need to control soil moisture due to rainfall.
  4. Suitable soil temperature, which has not had time to cool down after the hot summer months.
  5. No return frosts.
  6. Good selection of planting material.

Gardeners consider the disadvantages of this time:

  1. Possibility of early boarding.
  2. Deadline missed.
  3. The need for shelter. Improper preparation for winter leads to the formation of fungal infections, which threatens the death of the flower in the spring.

Planting roses in autumn

There is no clear time limit when you can plant roses in the ground in the fall. The only rule is that it must be done on time. The best time in autumn for planting roses is the period from mid-September. You need to focus on the climatic features of the region in which flower growers grow the queen of the garden. For a flower ideal temperature soil during the day is considered an indicator from + 10 ° to + 15 ° С, and at night it should not be lower than + 5 ° С.

There is no need to rush, but it is also impossible to delay work until November.

If planted early, for example, in August, then the seedlings have time to grow and release new leaves. It is very difficult for a plant in this state to prepare well for winter. It weakens and can quickly freeze.

Late disembarkation is also undesirable. The last months of autumn are dangerous for roses with the onset of frost. The seedling is still poorly fixed in the ground and also freezes easily. For normal rooting, the plant needs at least a month.

How to plant roses in autumn

In order for the planting to be successful, and next year in the spring the bushes pleased with their flowering, you will have to pay attention to several parameters. The result directly depends on a number of activities. Correct fit roses in autumn includes:

  • selection of the optimal location;
  • acquisition of high-quality planting material;
  • soil preparation for pits;
  • precise adherence to the landing algorithm.

Each stage has its own nuances and requires a more detailed description.

Selection and preparation of seedlings

To avoid disappointment at the time of flowering, seedlings should be selected in specialized nurseries or stores.

If you stop at the option of ordering on the Internet, then there is a chance of getting an unexpected result. This method does not make it possible to control the state of the root system and general form plants.
When buying, it is important to determine the time of landing in the ground. If this happens in the near future, then you can save on the price. Rose seedlings with an open root system are cheaper, it is possible to examine the roots well. Quick fit won't let them dry out. planting material choose based on proven rules:

  1. The plant has 3 developed shoots with intact bark and uniform color - these are seedlings of the highest category. The presence of 2 shoots is a sign of the second category.
  2. On the shoots there are small leaves.
  3. The roots are clean, well formed, without signs of damage, damage and decay. Root neck with a diameter of 8-10 cm.

Important! When buying plants in containers, make sure that the clod of earth fits snugly against its walls.

At the time of planting, the roots are carefully examined, the longest ones are cut, leaving a length of no more than 30 cm. Experienced gardeners It is recommended to cut all the roots to white. If the cut is dark, the root must be removed.

The strongest shoots (2-3 pieces) are left and cut into 2-3 buds. All others are removed. Roses give strong growth only after good pruning. Good result obtained by soaking the roots for a day in a stimulating solution.

Seat selection

The flower loves places with good lighting, sufficient air space. However, it is important that the plants are not exposed to gusts of wind. Groundwater level - 1 m from the surface and more. With a close location, a drainage layer is required.

According to gardeners, the ideal site would be the southern slope of the garden, where melt water drains well.

Soil preparation

Like any plant, you need to plant roses with roots in autumn in fertile land. Another recommendation is that the earth is prepared loose, well-permeable to air and moisture. Sand, peat, compost are added to heavy soil at the time of digging.

Important! The soil in the selected area should be prepared in advance.

Another nuance to remember is that roses love slightly acidic soil. If necessary, it is required to reduce the acidity with lime or dolomite flour.

The nutrient layer is prepared with a thickness of at least 40 cm. A mixture of loam and organic matter (1: 1) is suitable. Then wood ash is added in the amount of 0.5 kg per 1 sq. m.

Landing Rules

In order to plant roses with seedlings correctly in the fall, you must first familiarize yourself with the process algorithm:

Important! After the autumn planting, do not cut the roses! Pruning stimulates the growth of new shoots, and in the fall the rose does not need this.

Scheme

In autumn, the flower should be planted in the same way as in other seasons. Optimal Distance leaves 70 cm between plants, row spacing - 1.5 m. For a floribunda and hybrid tea rose, 50 - 60 cm is enough between the bushes, an English rose requires an increase in size to 70-80 cm, and climbing and large scars are planted from each other on distance 1 m - 1.5 m.

The recommended size of planting holes is 40x40x40 cm, but you need to look at the size of the root of the seedling. This volume is suitable for undersized varieties. Park or spray roses you will need to dig holes in the fall with a size of 50x50x50 cm, and climbing - 70x70x70 cm.

The recommended landing pattern must be followed. Roses planted close together suffer from a lack of light and air. They are stretched, quickly affected by diseases. Rare planting leads to overgrowth free space weeds, which also attracts pests and deprives the flower of nutrients.

Care after landing

Key Points further care autumn are dedicated to preparing roses for winter. Plants need to be kept warm. To do this, you need to install a frame made of wood or metal, cover it with spruce branches on top or build a cap from nonwoven fabric. Cover rose cuttings planted in autumn with a cap of plastic bottle. When snow falls on the site, it is necessary to heat a small snowdrift on the roses.

Planting roses in autumn cannot be called a very complicated process, but beginner growers should carefully read the rules and carefully follow the recommendations. In this case, next year there will be an amazingly beautiful do-it-yourself rose garden on the site.
